Modeling And Simulation Of \Sub-Microsecond Electrical Breakdown In Liquids With Application To Water, Jun Qian
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In this dissertation, the inherent physics and sub-microsecond electrical breakdown of water stressed to high voltages is analyzed, and several relevant models are constructed for quantitative analysis. A bubble-based, drift-diffusion (DD) model proposed here includes almost all the important physical process of the system, and successfully explains many important features routinely observed in sub-microsecond water electrical breakdown. Here many physical properties and response characteristics typical for high-field stressing of liquid water have been analyzed through numerical calculations. The internal temperature profile in the water system has been calculated by Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method to probe possible heating and …
Electromagnetic Propagation Prediction Inside Aircraft Cabins, Genevieve Hankins
Electromagnetic Propagation Prediction Inside Aircraft Cabins, Genevieve Hankins
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Electromagnetic propagation models for signal strength prediction within aircraft cabins are essential for evaluating and designing a wireless communication system to be implemented onboard aircraft. There are many commercially available software packages for predicting wireless system performance in conventional indoor environments. It is of interest to examine the available software to determine if the aircraft's electromagnetic environment (EME) can be modeled successfully without developing an aircraft specific prediction tool. EnterprisePlanner ®, a registered product of Wireless Valley Communications, Incorporated, was selected for the present effort. The performance of the prediction model was evaluated through a comparison with field measurements taken …
Modeling And Simulation Of Silicon Photonic Crystals Effect Of Oxidation And Etching, G. M. Haider Ali
Modeling And Simulation Of Silicon Photonic Crystals Effect Of Oxidation And Etching, G. M. Haider Ali
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Recent inventions of a silicon Raman laser and a high speed photon modulator might motivate integration of electronic and photonic active devices on the same silicon chip. Passive photonic devices in silicon such as waveguides, couplers and splitters have been developed. Photonic devices must be compatible with standard silicon CMOS fabrication processing in order to achieve the integration. Since CMOS fabrication involves a myriad of process steps, it is important to study the effect of processing on photonic devices. Oxidation and etching, two fundamental processes in silicon technology, are utilized in this thesis to model their effects on silicon photonic …

The Hybrid Architecture Parallel Fast Fourier Transform (Hapfft), Joseph M. Palmer
The Hybrid Architecture Parallel Fast Fourier Transform (Hapfft), Joseph M. Palmer
Theses and Dissertations
The FFT is an efficient algorithm for computing the DFT. It drastically reduces the cost of implementing the DFT on digital computing systems. Nevertheless, the FFT is still computationally intensive, and continued technological advances of computers demand larger and faster implementations of this algorithm. Past attempts at producing high-performance, and small FFT implementations, have focused on custom hardware (ASICs and FPGAs). Ultimately, the most efficient have been single-chipped, streaming I/O, pipelined FFT architectures. These architectures increase computational concurrency through the use of hardware pipelining. Streaming I/O, pipelined FFT architectures are capable of accepting a single data sample every clock cycle. …

Electrical Engineering
After progressing from research laboratories to factories to the market, semiconducting polymers now appear in commercial products and offer educational opportunities. Semiconducting polymers are excellent materials with which to teach semiconductor device fabrication principles, device testing, optical and electronic properties, polymer synthesis, polymer film preparation, and structure-property relationships. Previous publications have emphasized multidisciplinary course modules based on semiconducting polymers.1 This work emphasizes how the use of semiconducting polymers in an undergraduate polymer electronics course benefits electrical engineering and computer engineering students.

System And Method For Differential Data Collection, Jack P. Glas, Vladimir I. Prodanov
Electrical Engineering
The present invention is directed towards a data detector for deriving a data signal from an incoming radio frequency input. The data detector comprises a delay logic which receives an unfiltered signal in quadrature and in-phase components, and applies a delay to each of the in-phase and quadrature phase components of the unfiltered input signal. The detector further comprises a first multiplication logic that multiplies the delayed in-phase component of the unfiltered signal by the quadrature phase component of the unfiltered signal to obtain a first result, and a second multiplication logic that multiplies the delayed quadrature phase component of …

We first introduce a method called quantum path verification, where we search for a break in a quantum network. After explaining these capabilities, we address gate internal faults. We present new fault models to represent crosstalk and unwanted nearest neighbor entanglement. When witnessed, these errors are probabilistic, but there is a set of tests that has the highest probability of detecting a fault. We introduce a method of probabilistic set covering to identify this set of tests. A large part of our work consisted of writing a software package that allows us to compare various fault models and test strategies.
Effects Of Piconet Saturation On A Bluetooth Streaming Audio Channel, Theodore L. Josue
Effects Of Piconet Saturation On A Bluetooth Streaming Audio Channel, Theodore L. Josue
Theses and Dissertations
Bluetooth is a technology for wireless personal area networks (WPAN) that eliminates the need for cables, standardizes interfaces, and can automate many standard office processes such as sending and receiving email, synchronizing schedules, or exchanging business cards. With each workstation creating its own Bluetooth network, called a piconet, different Air Force environments have the potential, in some cases, to create more than 50 overlapping piconets, which significantly increases the potential for inter-piconet interference. This research investigates the effects of inter-piconet interference on a Bluetooth channel, streaming audio, offered at 24, 40, and 64 Kbps. It shows that as the number …

Disordered Speech Assessment Using Automatic Methods Based On Quantitative Measures, Lingyun Gu, John G. Harris, Rahul Shrivastav, Christine Sapienza
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Speech quality assessment methods are necessary for evaluating and documenting treatment outcomes of patients suffering from degraded speech due to Parkinson's disease, stroke, or other disease processes. Subjective methods of speech quality assessment are more accurate and more robust than objective methods but are time-consuming and costly. We propose a novel objective measure of speech quality assessment that builds on traditional speech processing techniques such as dynamic time warping (DTW) and the Itakura-Saito (IS) distortion measure. Initial results show that our objective measure correlates well with the more expensive subjective methods. © 2005 Hindawi Publishing Corporation.

Insulator Charging In Rf Mems Capacitive Switches, Jay F. Kucko
Insulator Charging In Rf Mems Capacitive Switches, Jay F. Kucko
Theses and Dissertations
While capacitive radio frequency microelectromechanical (RF MEM) switches are poised to provide a low cost, high isolation, low power alternative to current RF switch technologies, there are still reliability issues limiting switch lifetime. Previous research identified insulator charging as a primary cause of switch failure. Changes in switch pull-in and release voltages were measured to provide insight into the mechanisms responsible for charging and switch failure. A spatial and temporal dependent model was developed to describe silicon nitride's time-dependent charging as a function of applied bias. This model was verified by applying constant biases to metal-silicon nitride-silicon capacitors and tracking …
High-Temperature Ferromagnetism In Transition Metal Implanted Wide-Bandgap Semiconductors, Jeremy A. Raley
High-Temperature Ferromagnetism In Transition Metal Implanted Wide-Bandgap Semiconductors, Jeremy A. Raley
Theses and Dissertations
Material with both semiconductor and magnetic properties, which is commonly called a dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS), will prove most useful in the fabrication of spintronic devices. In order to produce a DMS at above room temperature, transition metals (TMs) were implanted into host semiconductors of p-GaN, Al0.35Ga0.65N, or ZnO. Magnetic hysteresis measurements using a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer show that some of the material combinations clearly exhibit ferromagnetism above room temperature. The most promising materials for creating spintronic devices using ion implantation are p-GaN:Mn, Al0.35Ga0.65N:Cr, and Fe-implanted ZnO nanotips on …
Wide-Angle Multistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar: Focused Image Formation And Aliasing Artifact Mitigation, Jonathan E. Luminati
Wide-Angle Multistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar: Focused Image Formation And Aliasing Artifact Mitigation, Jonathan E. Luminati
Theses and Dissertations
Traditional monostatic Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) platforms force the user to choose between two image types: larger, low resolution images or smaller, high resolution images. Switching to a Wide-Angle Multistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar (WAM-SAR) approach allows formation of large high-resolution images. Unfortunately, WAM-SAR suffers from two significant implementation problems. First, wavefront curvature effects, non-linear flight paths, and warped ground planes lead to image defocusing with traditional SAR processing methods. A new 3-D monostatic/bistatic image formation routine solves the defocusing problem, correcting for all relevant wide-angle effects. Inverse SAR (ISAR) imagery from a Radar Cross Section (RCS) chamber validates this approach. …
The Navigation Potential Of Signals Of Opportunity-Based Time Difference Of Arrival Measurements, Kenneth A. Fisher
The Navigation Potential Of Signals Of Opportunity-Based Time Difference Of Arrival Measurements, Kenneth A. Fisher
Theses and Dissertations
This research introduces the concept of navigation potential, NP, to quantify the intrinsic ability to navigate using a given signal. NP theory is a new, information theory-like concept that provides a theoretical performance limit on estimating navigation parameters from a received signal that is modeled through a stochastic mapping of the transmitted signal and measurement noise. NP theory is applied to SOP-based TDOA systems in general as well as for the Gaussian case. Furthermore, the NP is found for a received signal consisting of the transmitted signal, multiple delayed and attenuated replicas of the transmitted signal, and measurement noise. Multipath-based …
Assessing The Quality Of Voip Transmission Affected By Playout Buffer Scheme, Miroslaw Narbutt, Mark Davis
Assessing The Quality Of Voip Transmission Affected By Playout Buffer Scheme, Miroslaw Narbutt, Mark Davis
Conference papers
Delay, echo, encoding scheme, and packet loss all influence perceived quality of conversational speech transmitted over packet networks. Therefore, the choice of a buffer algorithm cannot be solely based on statistical loss/delay trade-off metrics. Also subjective “listening tests” or the newer ITU-T PESQ method, which don’t consider the effect of mouth-to-ear delay are inappropriate. We proposed a method for assessing VoIP call quality by extending the ITU-T E-model concept. This method provides a direct link to perceived conversational speech quality by estimating user satisfaction from the combined effect of information loss, delay and echo.

Differentiation Between Melt And Freeze Stages Of The Melt Cycle Using Ssm/I Channel Ratios, David G. Long, Ivan S. Ashcraft
Faculty Publications
Microwave remote sensing detection of snow melt and ablation generally focuses on the detection of liquid moisture in the snow-pack. For ablation estimation, it is important to determine if wet snow is in the process of melting or freezing. The different stages of the melt cycle are observed in the diurnal variation of Tb measurements from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) over Greenland. SSM/I channel ratios exhibit patterns indicating that they are sensitive to melt and freeze stages of the daily melt cycle. The horizontal to vertical polarization ratio is sensitive to surface wetness associated with melting. The 19-37-GHz …

Communications Over Fading Channels With Partial Channel Information : Performance And Design Criteria, Xinmin Deng
Communications Over Fading Channels With Partial Channel Information : Performance And Design Criteria, Xinmin Deng
Dissertations
The effects of system parameters upon the performance are quantified under the assumption that some statistical information of the wireless fading channels is available. These results are useful in determining the optimal design of system parameters. Suboptimal receivers are designed for systems that are constrained in terms of implementation complexity.
The achievable rates are investigated for a wireless communication system when neither the transmitter nor the receiver has prior knowledge of the channel state information (CSI). Quantitative results are provided for independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Gaussian signals. A simple, low-duty-cycle signaling scheme is proposed to improve the information rates …

Transceiver Design And System Optimization For Ultra-Wideband Communications, Hongshan Sheng
Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the potential promises and proposes possible solutions to the challenges of designing transceivers and optimizing system parameters in ultra-wideband (UWB) systems. The goal is to provide guidelines for UWB transceiver implementations under constraints by regulation, existing interference, and channel estimation.
New UWB pulse shapes are invented that satisfy the Federal Communications Commission spectral mask. Parameters are designed to possibly implement the proposed pulses. A link budget is quantified based on an accurate frequency-dependent path loss calculation to account for variations across the ultra-wide bandwidth of the signal.
Achievable information rates are quantified as a function of transmission …
Quality-Of-Service Provisioning In High Speed Networks : Routing Perspectives, Gang Cheng
Quality-Of-Service Provisioning In High Speed Networks : Routing Perspectives, Gang Cheng
Dissertations
The continuous growth in both commercial and public network traffic with various quality-of-service (QoS) requirements is calling for better service than the current Internet's best effort mechanism. One of the challenging issues is to select feasible paths that satisfy the different requirements of various applications. This problem is known as QoS routing. In general, two issues are related to QoS routing: state distribution and routing strategy. Routing strategy is used to find a feasible path that meets the QoS requirements. State distribution addresses the issue of exchanging the state information throughout the network, and can be further divided into two …

On Rate Capacity And Signature Sequence Adaptation In Downlink Of Mc-Cdma System, Jianming Zhu
Dissertations
This dissertation addresses two topics in the MC-CDMA system: rate capacity and adaptation of users' signature sequences. Both of them are studied for the downlink communication scenario with multi-code scheme.
The purpose of studying rate capacity is to understand the potential of applying MC-CDMA technique for high speed wireless data communications. It is shown that, to maintain high speed data transmission with multi-code scheme, each mobile should cooperatively decode its desired user's encoded data symbols which are spread with different signature sequences simultaneously. Higher data rate can be achieved by implementing dirty paper coding (DPC) to cooperatively encode all users' …

On Performance Analysis Of Optimal Diversity Combining With Imperfect Channel Estimation, Yong Peng
Theses
The optimal diversity combining technique is investigated for multipath Rayleigh and Ricean fading channel with additive white Gaussian noise where only imperfect channel knowledge is available at the receiver. The non-observable estimation error contributes as an additive source of noise which is not white. Therefore, the optimal combining weight is derived taking into consideration the imperfect channel knowledge.
The bit error rate for BPSK modulation over correlated Rayleigh and Ricean fading channel is derived for minimum mean square channel estimation using pilot symbol assisted modulation. Analytical result and Monte-Carlo simulation are presented for specific channel and estimation models to demonstrate …
Difference-Expansion Based Reversible Data Hiding And Its Steganalysis, Guangsen Tian
Difference-Expansion Based Reversible Data Hiding And Its Steganalysis, Guangsen Tian
Theses
A novel reversible data embedding method was reported in a recent IEEE journal article. The method was based on difference expansion (DE) technique. It used redundancy in digital images to achieve a high embedding capacity, while keeping visual distortion of the stego-image low. In this thesis, this technique was studied and experimentally evaluated. An effective steganalysis scheme for this DE-based reversible data embedding method was proposed, which used 12-dimensional feature vectors and a Bayes Classifier. The proposed steganalysis scheme steadily achieved a correct classification rate of 99%.

Performance Of Multi-User Codes In Wireless Communications, Muhammad Tauseef Ulislam
Theses
Multi-user codes are a widely used in transmitting user data from base station to mobile station and vice versa. In wireless communications a signal received by a mobile station goes through different fading channels resulting. These multi-paths add constructively and destructively with different delays and attenuation at the mobile station. The autocorrelation and cross correlation properties of the Multi-user codes play a significant role in extracting the user data from the signal corrupted by multipath fading channel.
The thesis presents a comparison of different Multi-user codes based on their autocorrelation and cross correlation properties. These codes are passed through a …

Analysis Of Mhpdm Algorithm For Data Hiding In Jpeg Images, Pooja Gore
Theses
In the recent years, there has been a great deal of interest in developing a secure algorithm for hiding information in images, or steganography. There has also been a lot of research in steganalysis of images, which deals with the detection of hidden information in supposedly natural images. The first section of this thesis reviews the steganography algorithms and steganalysis techniques developed in the last few years. It discusses the breadth of steganographic algorithms and steganalytic techniques, starting with the earliest, based on LSB flipping of the DCT coefficients, to more recent and sophisticated algorithms for data hiding and equally …
A Preliminary Study Of Electrocrystallization Of Bismuth On Glassy Carbon, Min-Li Yang, Zhan-Jun Zhang
A Preliminary Study Of Electrocrystallization Of Bismuth On Glassy Carbon, Min-Li Yang, Zhan-Jun Zhang
Journal of Electrochemistry
The electrocrystallization of bismuth on glassy carbon electrodes (GCEs) from nitrate solutions was studied by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. Cyclic voltammograms exhibit a crossover between the cathodic and anodic branches, characteristic of the formation of bismuth nuclei on GCEs, and show that the bismuth electrocrystallization on GCEs is a diffusion-controlled reaction. The current transients were analyzed with the Scharifker and the Heerman equations. With the increaseof Bi3+ concentration, the non-dimensional plots leaned to the theoretical curve for 3D instantaneous nucleation and growth. The overpotential dependence of nucleation and growth mechanism was also found. With the increase of overpotential, the …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Differential and common-mode transfer impedances are proposed herein to analyze noise coupled to (from) the dc power-bus from (to) via transitions in differential signals. Expressions for the two transfer impedances in terms of conventional single-ended transfer impedances are derived and verified through measurements, full-wave finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations and an analytical cavity model. Some properties of the differential and common-mode transfer impedances are investigated to facilitate engineering design. The impact of signal current imbalances on power-bus noise and the benefit of differential signals as compared to single-ended signals are quantified.
