The Relationship Between Nonsupervisory Employees' Self-Assessment Of Their Supervisory Skills And The Amount Of Satisfaction They Believe They Would Receive From Being A Supervisor, Arthur W. Hoffman Aug 1985

The Relationship Between Nonsupervisory Employees' Self-Assessment Of Their Supervisory Skills And The Amount Of Satisfaction They Believe They Would Receive From Being A Supervisor, Arthur W. Hoffman

Dissertations

This descriptive study investigated the relationship between perceived supervisory effectiveness (competence) and perceived supervisory satisfaction for nonsupervisory professional-technical employees who may aspire to supervisory positions. The study participants are employees of a large industrial company engaged in the engineering and manufacturing of diversified products for the automotive industry. Specifically, the study attempted to (a) collect employee selfassessment data regarding the employee's perceived supervisory job effectiveness and perceived job satisfaction, (b) determine whether a relationship existed between perceived supervisory effectiveness and satisfaction, and (c) determine if the employee's age and educational level were influencing factors.

In order to investigate the relationship …

The Effects Of Various Kinds Of Background Music On The I.Q. Scores Of Ninth-Grade Students, L.C. Bud Johnston Jul 1985

The Effects Of Various Kinds Of Background Music On The I.Q. Scores Of Ninth-Grade Students, L.C. Bud Johnston

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

One hundred 9th-grade students were divided into four groups of 25 each through systematic sampling procedures. Each of the groups were tested, pre and post, by the Otis-Lennon Mental Ability Test, forms J and K. During the pretest for all groups, the background condition of silence was observed. During the posttest, one group was again tested in silence. The other three groups were each tested to one of three background conditions: pop music, hard rock music, and soft rock music. Pop music played was characterized as more mellow, more melodic, and less intense than rock music. Hard rock …

The Psychological Issues Involved With Teaching Esl To Incarcerated Hispanic Males In An American Prison System, Sharon Morrison

MA TESOL Collection

On September 4, 1983, I began an ESL teaching position at Southeastern Correctional Center and at Bridgewater State Hospital, both in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. The former is a medium security correctional facility which houses approximately 700 men, whose crimes range from murder to auto theft. The latter is a maximum security hospital for the criminally insane which houses approximately 500 men, whose crimes as well range from murder to auto theft. Those men housed at Bridgewater State Hospital are there for one of the following reasons:

1. They are undergoing pre-trial psychiatric evaluation.

2. They have been convicted of a crime …

Participation In Decision Making And Its Effect On Job Satisfaction And Role Stress Of Staff In Child Development Agencies In The United States, Norma Seay Gray Jan 1985

Participation In Decision Making And Its Effect On Job Satisfaction And Role Stress Of Staff In Child Development Agencies In The United States, Norma Seay Gray

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study examined the relationship of staff participation and desire to participate in the decision-making process of an organization to perceived job satisfaction and role ambiguity and overload of teachers in child development agencies. The study also included an investigation of the methods of decision making most often used by child development agencies to determine if there was a significant relationship between the teachers’ level of satisfaction in participating in decision making and the mode of decision making used in their organizations.

Two hundred thirteen teachers from seventy-six child development programs completed questionnaires indicating how frequently they participated in each …

The Effects Of Test-Taking Instruction Upon The Test Scores Of Students Labeled As Learning Disabled, Deborah Wolfson Jan 1985

The Effects Of Test-Taking Instruction Upon The Test Scores Of Students Labeled As Learning Disabled, Deborah Wolfson

Masters Theses

A multiple-baseline design was used to investigate the effects of test-taking instruction upon the social studies test scores of four seventh grade students labeled as learning disabled. This two-phased (baseline and post-intervention) study ran for two semesters and included 14 test entries. All the tests were administered in the subjects' social studies class and scored by the subjects' social studies teacher. The teacher was not informed as to the nature of this study while it was in progress. The 10- day, individually instructed intervention package included activities in (a) test preparation (b) general test-taking principles (c) clue words (d) following …

Evaluating The Effect Of Project H.O.P.E.: An After-School Study Hall, Eugene Joseph Schmidt Jan 1985

Evaluating The Effect Of Project H.O.P.E.: An After-School Study Hall, Eugene Joseph Schmidt

All Graduate Projects

The effectiveness of Project HOPE, an acronym for Helping Our People Educationally, was tested to determine if improved academic achievement would result from an after-school study hall. Intended for ninth grade students that fall behind because of uncompleted daily work and missed assignments, Project HOPE was created to give students "a last chance." It was thought that daily work scores would rise and that students would realize an overall increase in their final course grades. The actual experiment was run from November 19, 1984 until January 17, 1985. The experimental group was the writer's tenth grade English class. Despite improvements …

Mobility As An Element Of Learning Styles: The Effect Its Inclusion Or Exculsion Has On Student Performance In The Standardized Testing Environment, Linda Miller

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between mobility and the standardized testing environment. The project focused on nine students who had a pronounced need for movement while learning and/or being tested. The study was conducted to determine whether the achievement scores of these nine students would be influenced by the denial or availability of movement while they were administered a standardized reading test. Twenty-one second grade students were the subjects. Two forms of Level B of the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test were used. All subjects were tested in a traditional environment with no movement allowed. The same …

What Have We Learned From Process Models Of Conversion? An Examination Of Ten Case Studies, David Rudy Oct 1984

What Have We Learned From Process Models Of Conversion? An Examination Of Ten Case Studies, David Rudy

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Many attempts to understand the conversion process have been guided by Lofland and Stark's (1965) "process-mode." We examine ten case studies of the conversion process in diverse groups in order to specify the conditions under which the Lofland-Stark model applies. Several components of the model are rejected for conceptual reasons. Other components are to be found in some types of groups but not in others. Only "formation of affective bonds with group members" and "intensive interaction with group members" seem to be indispensable prerequisites for conversion. Thus, any group which is to successfully convert people must be structured so as …

Effects Of Two Instructional Sets On The Validity Of The Kaufman Assessment Battery For Children -- Non-Verbal Scale With A Group Of Severely Hearing Impaired Children, Larry James Porter

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to investigate the applicability and appropriateness of the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC)--Non-Verbal Scale for assessing intellectual functioning in severely hearing impaired children. The Non-verbal K-ABC was administered to 49 children ages 7 through 12 years enrolled at a public residential school for the deaf. Test instructions were given to one group of 24 employing American sign language (ASL), plus pantomime and gestures while the other group of 25 received pantomime and gesture (PG) instructions only. It was hypothesized that the ASL group would score significantly higher than the PG group. However, no …

Research To Develop A Consensus Self-Evaluation Model Of National Norms Of Excellence For Alternating Cooperative Education Programs At Four-Year Colleges And Universities, Constance F. Brothers Apr 1984

Research To Develop A Consensus Self-Evaluation Model Of National Norms Of Excellence For Alternating Cooperative Education Programs At Four-Year Colleges And Universities, Constance F. Brothers

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

The research described in this dissertation was conducted in response to an expressed need for the development of national norms of excellence for cooperative education programs in the United States in 1980. In academic year 1981-1982 a Delphi technique was used with 12 cooperative education experts, who identified 155 cooperative education program norms of excellence specifically for four-year alternating cooperative education programs.

In academic year 1982-1983, the 155 norms identified were transposed into a 90-item self-evaluation questionnaire which was field tested and sampled at 14 colleges and universities with alternating cooperative education programs in the United States. Of 900 college …

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage

Tests are constructed and used to facilitate assessment and understanding of human beings in all their multifaceted complexity. Hence, testing by its very nature is both a scientific and a social endeavor.

The interplay between testing and society has resulted in both praise and criticism from concerned citizens, psychologists, educators, and numerous other professional and consumer groups. For over 40 years, Oscar K. Buros, as Director of The Institute of Mental Measurements and Editor of the Mental Measurements Yearbooks. contributed immensely to this interplay between testing practices and societal issues. On March 19, 1978, Oscar Buros died. Luella Buros …

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage

Why do we have tests? What useful purposes do they serve? How can test results be used to make decisions? How can a test be proved to provide accurate and usable information? Questions such as these have been posed recently by a concerned public who have become more aware of and concerned about testing, test quality, and appropriate test usage. Their questions are challenging, legitimate queries that can and should be addressed by members of the measurement community .

Some of the questions being asked by the public are value laden, providing topics for many thoughtful but heated debates. For …

7. Aptitude And Achievement Tests: The Curious Case Of The Indestructible Strawperson, Anne Anastasi

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage

In a talk I gave at the 1979 ETS Invitational Conference, I remarked that, if I were suddenly endowed with the appropriate occult powers, I should choose to eliminate certain words from the psychometric vocabulary. Among them were the words aptitude and achievement (Anastasi, 1980). These terms have led to nearly as much confusion, misinterpretation, and misuse of tests as has the more notorious term intelligence. Having been asked once more to discuss the same general topic in 1982, it occurred to me that I might consider why the myths that surround these terms are so persistent-and persistent they …

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage

The writer of achievement test items is confronted with two major problems, as Lindquist pointed out nearly half a century ago (Lindquist, 1936, p. 17). The first of these is the problem of what to measure. The second is how to measure it. The solution proposed for the first problem is to focus primarily on testing for knowledge and only secondarily on testing for abilities. Cognitive abilities, it is reasonable to believe, depend entirely on knowledge. Although the term knowledge, as commonly used, includes both information and understanding, the most useful kind of knowledge, the kind that will occupy our …

9. Abilities And Knowledge In Educational Achievement Testing: The Assessment Of Dynamic Cognitive Structures, Samuel Messick

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage

This chapter confronts the question of what role cognitive abilities play or ought to play in educational achievement testing, which raises the prior question of what educational achievement tests are or ought to be. I begin by considering the nature of educational achievement as a construct in an attempt to circumscribe what achievement tests ought to be rather than by examining extant achievement tests that may be variously off target. Similar consideration is accorded cognitive ability as a construct. This distinction between constructs and the imperfect, variously contaminated tests that are purported to measure them is a critical recurrent theme …

6. Testing And The Oscar Buros Lament: From Knowledge To Implementation To Use, James V. Mitchell Jr.

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage

The field of measurement can be conceptualized as having three different but interrelated aspects. First of all, it is a science or a body of knowledge concerned with the development of theory and methodology and with the identification and confirmation of generalizations governing interrelationships among variables appropriate to its content. Measurement theory and its application to measurement problems are important contributors here. Second, it is an applied science or technology concerned with the development of products that represent a useful application of such a science or body of knowledge. For the field of measurement, test development and validation are important …

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage

It was the Chinese over 3000 years ago, not the Americans in this century, who first used large-scale psychological testing (Dubois, 1966). But, as with many other technological developments, it was the United States that enthusiastically adopted the method (Haney, 1981). By now it is highly probable that every person in our country has been affected in some way by the administration of tests. Testing has become the means by which major decisions about people's lives are made in industry, education, hospitals, mental health clinics, and the civil service.

Tests themselves, by and large, are facially neutral. They do not …
