Intelligence And Achievement Testing Of Convalescent Crippled Children, Loretta M. Miller
Intelligence And Achievement Testing Of Convalescent Crippled Children, Loretta M. Miller
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies
Psychological studies of crippled children have been few, but among published studies opinion is unanimous that crippled children test lower in intelligence than normal children. The study reported here arrives at the same conclusion. In that respect, it adds nothing new to the picture, but in an area in which findings are not entirely definitive, a study of convalescent crippled children may add confirmation to the general body of knowledge.
Universities In Australia., Eric Ashby
Universities In Australia., Eric Ashby
Future of Education
The author states that the purpose of writing this piece is to put before the Australian public the case for universities. It is directed to parents who want their children to get a degree; to industrialists who employ (or refuse to employ) university men and women; to those public servants who look on graduates with suspicion and to those politicians who look on them with contempt. [p.5, ed]
This essay deals with the problems which Australian universities face. [p.6, ed]
It deals with issues of attitudes towards Australian universities, subjects, curriculum, barriers to entry and much more.
From School To Work : A Plea For Vocational Guidance., W.M O'Neil
From School To Work : A Plea For Vocational Guidance., W.M O'Neil
Future of Education
Practically every young Australian leaving school goes to work and the choice of that work is a momentous decision for both the young person and his parents. [p.3]
Unfortunately, the business of choosing a career has become progressively more difficult. Three changes are mentioned to illustrate this. In the first place the increasing variety of modern occupations has created a larger field from which selection has to be made. In the second place, modern mechanized production has taken much of the skill of the old craftsman and put it into the machines. [p.5, ed]
In the third place, few occupations …
Education For Parenthood., Zoe Benjamin
Education For Parenthood., Zoe Benjamin
Future of Education
It would be absurd to expect that all parents should be perfect; but with adequate facilities for education and training, we could have, in each generation, a steadily increasing number of men and women capable of carrying out their parental responsibilities with wisdom. [p.5]
The author then proceeds to offer advice to parents on assisting in the education of children at various age levels. This includes many topics, from how they spend their leisure time to making sure they meet their psychological needs.

Education For Democracy, John Dudley Gibbs Medley
Education For Democracy, John Dudley Gibbs Medley
Future of Education
The authors general thesis is that if we are serious about the need of planning for better world after the war the first thing to start thinking about is education. This is done by developing two definitions of two familiar words and then stating four general propositions. The first word is democracy which the author defines as a system of society in which a large majority of the citizens are not only qualified in mind and body to play a significant part in the common business of community, but actually have opportunities to do so. Secondly, education is defined as …

Reform In The Primary School., J. M. Braithwaite, C. R. Mcrae, R. G. Staines
Future of Education
The pamphlet suggests reforms to primary school education as every Australian state there had been successive revisions of the course of study, all expressing a shift of emphasis away from monotonous grind and repetition, and towards such occupations as art, handwork, music, and physical education. But the movement towards better things was slow. [p. 5, ed]
We have seen that, during primary school years, the child grows in four main ways-physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. The function of the primary school is to ensure successful growth of all four kinds. It is a fair criticism of the average school that …

Careers Of High School Basketball Players, Jewel D. Michael
Careers Of High School Basketball Players, Jewel D. Michael
Graduate Thesis Collection
Popular opinion is divided into two general groups as to the value of basketball activities, one group holding that training in basketball will transfer to actual life situations, while the other contends that it is a waste of time to spend hours in practicing and in trips which necessitate absence from academic work. In general, this study seeks to give some evidence on this question, through an examination of the subsequent careers or the boys who were basketball players in Frankfort High School during the years from 1919-1940.

The individual who lacks the use of his voice as a musical instrument lacks the natural, fundamental medium of musical expression. Not only does he lack the means for the closest and most direct relationship with music, but also there is a serious danger that, as a result, his whole range of musical appreciation will be impaired and finally obliterated. This is likely to occur because he does not have at his command and under his control this power which he so definitely needs. Children who are thus handicapped are often designated by the use of the word monotone.

The Transfer Of Training From Latin To French And Spanish, Pauline Ray Morton-Finney
Graduate Thesis Collection
The purpose of this study is to investigae the relationship between Latin and French, between Latin and Spanish, and to evaluate the assumption of many language teachers that high school pupuls who have had one year of Latin tended, on the whole, because of that fact, to do better academic work in Franch and Spanish as measured in terms of marks received, than did pupils who had not studied Latin.

Pupil Interest In The Core Curriculum, Robert E. Mcconnell
Pupil Interest In The Core Curriculum, Robert E. Mcconnell
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies
What does a young American do? How does he spend his time? What is he compelled to do as a young citizen? How should he spend his time? How do his parents spend their time? The proper answering of these questions on the part of the school forms the core curriculum. Time was (and is yet, for that matter) when adult teachers decided what the child should learn and then attempted to force him into learning it. They paid little attention to the circumstances of the moment and oftentimes little attention to reality. Too little attention was given to the …

Sex And Cultural Differences On The New Mexico Statewide Test Of Academic Achievement, Claude C. Mcdougal
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
For a number of years sex differences on many varied topics have been popular studies for investigations. The old belief that the female was definitely inferior to the male has largely disappeared, and the female is rapidly taking her place in the competitive fields alongside the male. Racial and cultural differences alike have been subjected to various investigations, mainly in the field of psychology, and to a lesser extent in education.
The research reported here is concerned with (1) the investigation of sex and cultural differences in the statewide examination of academic achievement as indicated by differences in the means …

Experimental Results Of Training In General Semantics Upon Intellingence-Test Scores, Joseph C. Trainor
Experimental Results Of Training In General Semantics Upon Intellingence-Test Scores, Joseph C. Trainor
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies
The theory of General Semantics in its present (1935) form is essentially that there exists in the human nervous system a general mechanism, somewhat similar in nature of concept to that type of functioning which we have been calling vaguely, intelligence. In distinction, however, to the commonly held views on intelligence, General Semantics implies that this mechanism is exceedingly amenable to environmental influences; that it may, in other words, show marked effects of training in Semantic methods.
To this end a group of thirty sophomores in the Washington State Normal School at Ellensburg, Washington, were given the Detroit Intelligence Test, …
