Journal of Extension
Youth experience many benefits from participating in the 4-H program. It is unclear, however, what role parents play in their child’s reenrollment in the program. This study uses data from a multi-year multi-state study of youth retention in 4-H to examine the effects of parental expectations and experience on their intent to reenroll their child after their first year in 4-H. Results show a relationship between parental expectations and experiences on continued involvement. This study can be used to help 4-H programs recruit and retain more youth, as well as by other Extension programs to understand retention issues.

Optimizing Pediatric Peri-Anesthesia Care: A Donna Wright Nursing Competency Framework, Marisa Elise Gauna
Optimizing Pediatric Peri-Anesthesia Care: A Donna Wright Nursing Competency Framework, Marisa Elise Gauna
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: Preventable hospital errors are often associated with inconsistent nursing competency, especially in high-acuity areas such as pediatric peri-anesthesia units. Traditional evaluation tools like checklists have limited effectiveness, as they frequently fail to engage staff or adapt to changing clinical demands (Wright, 2005). Context: At a Bay Area children’s hospital, baseline data from August 2024 revealed that only 65% of peri-anesthesia nurses reported feeling “very” or “somewhat” comfortable with key clinical skills. To address this, a quality improvement project was launched with the goal of increasing comfort levels by 15% using the Donna Wright Competency Model, which emphasizes staff engagement, …

Pre-Service Teacher Self-Efficacy For Classroom Management And Evidence Based Practices For Managing Classroom And Challenging Behaviors, Mathew Benthin
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This study investigated the relationship between pre-service teachers' self-efficacy (TSE) and their knowledge of evidence-based practices. Teacher self-efficacy, defined as the belief in one's ability to achieve specific teaching goals, plays a pivotal role in shaping teaching behaviors and student outcomes. Evidence-based practices, grounded in scientific research, are essential for effective teaching and problem-solving in diverse classroom settings. This study highlighted the importance of the two specific resources of self-efficacy and knowledge of evidence-based practices for managing classrooms and challenging behaviors. By exploring pre-service teacher resources, this study aimed to contribute to the body of literature exploring the challenges facing …
Advanced Literacies In The 21st Century: Examining A Narrative-Based Video Game As A Stealth Assessment For Comprehension, Joseph Paul Fiorentini
Advanced Literacies In The 21st Century: Examining A Narrative-Based Video Game As A Stealth Assessment For Comprehension, Joseph Paul Fiorentini
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In our technology-rich 21st Century, the need for valid, reliable, and fair literacy assessments remains pertinent to the field of education. This study defines literacy as advanced literacy where comprehension is considered a holistic product of applying acquired knowledge, skills, or abilities (KSA) to contextualized situations. Conventional assessment methods have traditionally parceled out the construct into its component parts (i.e., vocabulary, phonics, fluency, etc.) as a means of understanding the meaning making process from a traditional literacy perspective. Stealth assessments utilize the Evidence-Centered Design (ECD) framework as a robust method for assessing complex constructs holistically within technology rich environments. Adapting …
A Novel Game-Based Assessment Of Risk-Taking Propensity: Development And Psychometric Evidence, Danielle L. Head
A Novel Game-Based Assessment Of Risk-Taking Propensity: Development And Psychometric Evidence, Danielle L. Head
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Risk-taking propensity is defined and measured in different ways across the literature, resulting in assessment issues related to construct validity (Bran & Vaidis, 2020). Multimethod assessment approaches can bolster construct validity by capturing more facets of risk-taking propensity (Meyer et al., 2001). Risk-taking propensity is assessed through self-report questionnaires (Zhang et al., 2019), which exhibit good test-retest reliability (Frey et al., 2017) and predictive validity (Beauchamp et al., 2017), and behavioral tasks (Aklin et al., 2005), which are less psychometrically sound, lacking convergent validity and test-retest reliability (Frey et al., 2017). Guided by evidence-centered design principles (Mislevy, 2013), a novel …

Master's Projects and Capstones
Objective Implementing the Donna Wright Competency Model at a Bay Area Children’s Hospital in its peri-anesthesia units. Throughout available literature it was possible to observe the positive effects of implementing a competency model such as the DWCM has on the confidence of nursing staff and patient outcomes. An important point shown by literature was addressing more than technical skills and incorporating critical thinking and ethical considerations regarding patient care. Aim We aim to improve nurse competency in pediatric peri-anesthesia units at a Bay Area Children's Hospital by implementing Donna Wright’s Competency Model. Data obtained in August 2024 from a series …
Item Response Predictors Of Disengagement On The Pisa, Juste M. Mehou
Item Response Predictors Of Disengagement On The Pisa, Juste M. Mehou
Masters Theses, 2020-current
International assessments, such as the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), are instrumental in understanding educational progress, assessing teaching effectiveness, and ensuring institutional accountability (OECD, 2023). Central to the validity of these assessments is the assumption that students will exert sufficient effort and perform to the best of their abilities (AERA, APA, & NCME, 2014). This assumption is essential to ensure that scores accurately reflect students' true abilities (Wise & Kong, 2005). However, there is a documented concern that students often exhibit low effort in low-stakes tests, such as the PISA, where individual results have no direct consequences (Wise & …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between School Counselors' Use Of Time, Student Perceptions Of School Counselors, And Students' College, Career, And Life Readiness In Indiana Schools, Kelly H. Dunn
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
School counselors play a vital role in supporting students' academic, career, social, and emotional development. Research shows that when school counselors dedicate more time to direct interactions with students, outcomes improve in areas such as graduation rates, disciplinary incidents, grade retention, and postsecondary enrollment (Carey et al., 2012; Chaney, 2023). However, many counselors face barriers to direct engagement due to non-counseling tasks, which limit their ability to provide the personalized support that students value. The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model (ASCA, 2019b), a widely adopted framework for organizing school counseling programs, recommends that no more than 20% of …

Cultural Of Authenticity And Commodification: Analyzing The Aesthetic Waves And Collective Culture In The 2010s And 2020s, Stefanny Leung Yu
Student Theses
The “authentic self” is curated, aestheticized, and most notably, commodified. Digital algorithms, likes, views, and engagement are more than just digital metrics, they are the management of performance. For millions of other users — including the author herself — social media is the locus of personal expression. Most notably, sites like Tumblr, where users in the 2010s posted hazy images or overly filtered graphics along with melancholic song lyrics that match the vibe of the moment, expression was earnest and idealized. Today, social media in the 2020s, new creators like Hannah Neelaman, better known as Ballerina Farm, dress in pastoral …
