The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of the establishment of a para-military program in a large comprehensive high school. Specifically, the study compared two educational programs operating within the same school; one, the traditional program with objectives oriented to intellectual achievement, the other, a para-military program with objectives oriented to developing qualities of citizenship through experiences in leadership. The study attempted to discover how leadership experiences influenced the growth of positive self-concept. Dictation Procedures And Related Practices In Offices In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Hazel Powell

The problem.

The purpose of this study was to determine and to analyze the procedures and related practices that characterize office dictation as it is given in representative offices in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Procedure.

Interviews held with forty dictators of office dicta­tion and the forty persons who transcribed their dictation yielded cur­rent data concerning dictation procedures. Organizations represented were distributors of goods and services, educational institutions, gov­ernment, manufacturing businesses, military establishments; and- service organizations. One-half of the dictators were asked to dictate three or four items each to be tape-recorded as a supplement to the interviews.

Purpose of the study: The purpose of this study was to determine the efficiency of the use of the Initial Teaching Alphabet as a remedial reading teaching technique. Six children who failed to learn a basic sight vocabulary from their respective basal text reading programs in the first or second year of school were chosen as participants.

Procedure: In May, 1967, he pupils were tested with the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children to determine the intelligence quotients of each child. All of the boys received a score which placed them within the lower limits of the average rang of intelligence. …

The objective of this study was to examine the extent to which congruent role expectations on 50 selected variables were held for the secondary school principal about his role in professional administration and in collective negotiations by representatives of Utah's educational enterprise. The effect of teaching critical thinking as part of a continuous progress packet in American history was studied at Cedar High School during the 1969-70 school year. An experimental group using the critical thinking packet was compared with a control group that used a continuous progress packet that taught only American history.

The dependent variables for the study were the STEP (Sequential Test of Educational Progress), Social Studies portion, and the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal. No statistically significant differences were found between the groups in either American history or critical thinking.

A Survey Of Sixth Grade Students' Reactions To Selected Situations Involving Certain Elements Of Civil Rights, Robert Neldon Hanson

The purpose of this study was to determine :

1. What actions sixth grade children think should be taken in situations that contain certain elements of civil rights.

2. The reasons given by the sixth grade children for choosing these actions.

A measuring instrument was constructed from 14 court cases containing certain elements of civil rights. These court cases were then rewritten so that sixth grade students could comprehend the vocabulary and situations described. Statements for students responses were developed from the case itself, newspapers, and magazine articles.

Seventy-two is (half males, half females) from each of four lower-class cultural groups, i.e., Anglo, Black, Spanish-American, and Navaho, were randomly assig ed to four reward conditions: money, candy, personal-praise, and performance-directed-praise. Each S was given a 10-minute marble dropping task, in which the third minute was designated as the baseline. D ring minutes four through ten, two response measures were derived for each S: rate of response, and a reinforcer effectiveness score.
