Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Statement of the Problem
The problem was to incorporate the findings of sociolinguistic research in Black English into a writing seminar for lower socio-economic Black students entering an institution of higher learning. This seminar was to be linguistically and pedagogically sound, efficiently structured, and motivationally effective with the result that the written dialect of Standard English would be comprehended and produced during the first term of each student's entry into the institution. The purpose of the study was to investigate the efficacy of the use of contrastive analysis methodology as a means of reducing both the kinds and numbers of …

Multicultural Curriculum Training With Pre-Student Teachers In Language Arts., Martha Weidman Hubble
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Despite serious attempts to increase the educational success of minority groups, culturally diverse learners continue to fail to acquire the educational skills that allow for comforts afforded the majority culture. With stress on developing native and English language skills, important cultural aspects of minority groups' heritages have not been the primary concern. This study relates to two problems in multicultural education1 (1) the inability of teachers to relate to and understand. the culturally diverse learner, and (2) the dearth of teaching materials based on the minority group members' cultural heritages.
Randomly selected from 29 secondary education pre-student teachers in language …

Attitudes Toward Bilingual Education: A Study Of Parents With Children In Selected Bilingual Programs, Lorraine P. GutiéRrez
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The purpose of this study was to investigate attitudes of parents, whose children were in bilingual programs, toward bilingual education. The study also sought to find if differences existed between income groups in attitudes related to sex, age, mobility, and education.
PROCEDURE
Two hundred and twenty persons (or 110 pairs of parents) whose children were in bilingual programs in ten schools in the Albuquerque Public School System comprised the sample. Anomie, Aspirations, And Delinquency: Implications For Education, John R. Schuster
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The problem of this study is how can youth who have accepted deviant behavior as a pattern be identified. This study investigates relationships among anomie, aspirations, delinquency, and educational achievement, and it theorizes that students who are not anomic, hold high aspirations, and achieve normally in school will not exhibit deviant behavior as a pattern. The antithesis of the theoretical statement is also proposed.

Educational Mathematical Games As An Aid To Learning With Seventh Grade Mathematics Students At Wahlquist Junior High, Lewis Riley Taylor
Educational Mathematical Games As An Aid To Learning With Seventh Grade Mathematics Students At Wahlquist Junior High, Lewis Riley Taylor
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
One of the trends in mathematics has been the introduction of educational games as learning devices . A student's attitude toward mathematics is recognized to be very high when games are used. Walter Cronkite, on CBS television, summed up the promise of educational gaming when he said, "By participating, by playing a game , an other - wise dull subject becomes fascinating and unforgettable to the student." (Nesbitt, 1971, p. 2) Bradfield states it in this manner:
Many teachers of mathematics are unbelievably boring in their approach to teaching. Consequently , many potentially strong students never develop any great liking …

A Work-Study Program For Educable Mentally Retarded In Lincoln Junior High--Salt Lake City, Utah, Jay Elmo Christensen
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In the spring of 1968 this writer was assigned to teach a group of seventh, eighth and ninth grade students who had been labeled Educable Mentally Retarded at Lincoln Junior High School. The students ranged from twelve to sixteen years of age, and many of them were from lower income homes.
In attempting to set up a work-study program the administration had decided that they preferred a work-study orientation program for these pupils. It was hoped that this type of program would motivate the students to become more involved in the school program.

Some Background Considerations To The Establishment Of A Consortium Of Four Intermountain States, In The Area Of Independent Study, Suresh C. Kaushik
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The growth of Independent Study divisions of the state-supported educational institutions of the area covered by the states of Utah, Nevada, Idaho and Wyoming, and the increasing demands for the establishment of new curricular offerings, coupled with these states' limited financial resources, make the exploration of possible cooperative offerings a rather crucial necessity.
The purpose of this study was to develop and appraise the climate for developing a consortium of the Independent Study divisions of Utah State University, University of Utah, University of Nevada, University of Idaho, and University of Wyoming. A systematic sequence of approach for accomplishing the stated …

A Comparative Study Of The Relationship Of Self Concept To Achievement In Navajo And Anglo Children., Ronald L. Oldham
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
This study was undertaken to develop an empirical basis for the comparison of Anglo and Navajo children in the relationship of their self concept to their academic achievement. There is much research dealing with the way Anglo children view themselves in their interaction with family, friends and the school program. It was felt that additional research was warranted to enable educators to compare more accurately the attitudes of ethnic groups in these areas and better understand the impact of the total school program on academic achievement.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Statement of the problem. The central problem of this study was twofold: (1) to determine whether the educational research preparation offered by selected colleges and universities bore out the findings of critics, and (2) to synthesize and synergize opinions and facts regarding educational research, as expressed by men active in the field, into a flexible proposal whereby individual student's programs in research preparation could be "custom-made" to suit their most obvious research needs. Organization And Administration Of Student Government - Particular Reference To Intermountain Indian School, Maurice C. Whitaker
Organization And Administration Of Student Government - Particular Reference To Intermountain Indian School, Maurice C. Whitaker
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The student council idea is now widely accepted in secondary schools in the United States; its full potential in contributing to the education and lives of students has not been realized fully in a great many instances.
The student council is a dynamic movement and because it is dynamic it is capable of change to meet new conditions. Hence, it cannot remain basically the same year in and year out. The changing dimensions of the student council can be realized only if students, faculty and principals work at it.
