A Study Of Relationships Between Teacher Classroom Behavior And Concurrent Student Interest In Classroom Activities, Earl Mcgrath Douglas

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Although it is widely conceded among educators that the problem of student interest and involvement in ongoing classroom activities is a crucial one, it has received little attention from researchers. This study was initiated to investigate the extent of student interest displayed in ongoing classroom activities, and to determine whether student interest may be related to certain kinds of behavior exhibited by their teachers. Five elementary classrooms were observed for one full school day. The behavior of the teacher and that of nine students, selected at random, was recorded in each classroom. The students observed were divided into groups of …

The Meanings And The Distribution Of The Perfect In Present-Day American English Writing, Betty Lou Dubois Aug 1972

The Meanings And The Distribution Of The Perfect In Present-Day American English Writing, Betty Lou Dubois

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

A search of the relevant literature and of textbooks of English for speakers of other languages fails to turn up a theory of the English perfect which is both comprehensive and fully explanatory. The author hypothesizes that the meaning common to all forms of the perfect of American English, which includes those forms traditionally called the present perfect tense, the past perfect tense, and the perfect of the infinitive, the gerund, and the present participle is priority to a point of reference. The perfect situates the action or state conveyed by the lexical verb in a period of time which …

Some Aspects Of Navajo Orthography, Wayne Stanley Holm Jul 1972

Some Aspects Of Navajo Orthography, Wayne Stanley Holm

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Navajo has been written, in various forms, for more than a century, but practical orthographies have been available for less than fifty years.

Navajo literacy programs have been conducted in the past by various interest groups, but the current effort differs from its predecessors in that it has the support of a growing number of young Navajo educators. Vowel length, tone, ar1id nasality are phonemic in Navajo. The current practical orthography makes use of doubled vowels to mark length, an acute accent to mark high tone, and a cedilla or "nasal hook" to mark nasality. The orthography makes it fairly …

The Relationship Of Ethnicity And Socio-Economic Status To Student Perceptions Of School Bureaucracy., Thomas Henry Cloyd Jul 1972

The Relationship Of Ethnicity And Socio-Economic Status To Student Perceptions Of School Bureaucracy., Thomas Henry Cloyd

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The central concern of this study was to investigate and analyze student perceptions of the school bureaucracy. The findings indicated a relationship between the student characteristics of age, sex, ethnicity, socio-economic status, and total effectiveness, and student perceptions of school bureaucracy. It was also found that students perceive the school more bureaucratically than did a panel of judges’ rating the same school.

Students in nine schools (three elementary, three junior high, and three senior high) in the Albuquerque Public School District served as subjects in this study. The schools were stratified according to the socio-economic status of the school population. …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Teacher Perceptions And Bicultural/Bilingual Affective Interaction In The Classroom, Augustine García Jul 1972

A Study Of The Relationship Between Teacher Perceptions And Bicultural/Bilingual Affective Interaction In The Classroom, Augustine García

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The Problem

Many school districts and teacher education institutions are initiating bicultural/bilingual teacher inservice training programs. Generally, these programs include two kinds of objectives. The first are "orienting" objectives, such as the development of cultural awareness and Spanish proficiency, to be achieved during the instructional period. Secondly, "performance" objectives are those which are assumed to be reached in the classroom, as a result of the achievement of the "orienting" objectives. This assumption has yet to be investigated.

Statement of the problem. The primary purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a relationship between teacher perceptions of the …
