POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education
A 1975 ETS survey by John Centra reported that close to 60 percent of the 2600 degree granting institutions of higher education in the United States had some type of staff development program or someone who coordinated staff development activities (Centra, 1976). As the decade of the 80's begins, there are no indications that staff development has experienced the loss of momentum so characteristic of other innovative ventures in higher education; rather, the interest in the development of staff is continuing to grow. Evidence of this trend include the formation of two national organizations, the Professional and Organizational Development Network …

The Verbal Structure Of Teacher Questions: Its Impact On Class Discussion, John D. W. Andrews
POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education
Improving discussion participation is one of the most widespread concerns of college instructors. Like most consultants, I often make suggestions based on my own experience and on hunches formed from observing a variety of teachers at work. Yet I have felt the need to test these hunches, and to generate solutions to the problem that are based on objective, systematic evidence. To take a step in this direction has been the purpose of the research project presented here.
This study deals with the contribution made by the verbal structure of questions to the form and quality of discussions (1). This …

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education
Grasha and Reichmann (1975) developed a questionnaire to assess student learning style. This instrument allows the student to identify preferred styles described as Independent, Dependent, Avoidant, Competitive, Collaborative and Participant. This material has been used in various faculty development programs.
Kolb (1976, 1977) developed a self-report instrument, The Learning Style Inventory, to measure perceived learning styles. The instrument uses as its basis the experiential learning model with its origin in the work of Jung (1923) and Lewin (1945).
The Learning Style Inventory has been used to assess individual preference for the four identified learning abilities as shown in Figure 1. …

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education
What does one write in one's final statement as editor? David Outcalt, the previous editor, suggested I remind the readership of how difficult it was to follow in his footsteps. Sandy Inglis, who will be the new editor, thought it might be appropriate to remind people of the hard work and long hours that accompany this position. Both are correct and deserve thanks and support, respectively. However, I have something else in mind.

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education
I suppose it is appropriate-symbolic, really-that this issue of the Quarterly is a double one. It would be convenient to gloss the matter over, to hype the fact that this is POD's first "double issue." Make the most of it; let everyone know how "innovative" we are. That would do an injustice to the deeper truth and to the frayed nerves of Glenn Nyre, who has been ready to go to press for a long time.

POD Quarterly is a publication of the Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Network in Higher Education. POD is an association of people bound together by an interest in improving higher education through faculty, instructional, and organizational development activities and programs. The Network was created in 1976 so that those who share common interests and concerns could exchange information, ideas, and resources; enhance professional skills; debate issues and strategies; and contemplate and plan for the future. The POD Quarterly is designed to further those aims through refereed articles about professional, organizational, and instructional development practice and research. It will also include …

Planning To Improve The Public Relations Program In The Mattoon Community Unit School District #2, Mattoon, Illinois, Howard Price Powell Jr.
Planning To Improve The Public Relations Program In The Mattoon Community Unit School District #2, Mattoon, Illinois, Howard Price Powell Jr.
Masters Theses
The purpose of the field experience was to improve the public relations program in the Mattoon Community Unit School District #2, Mattoon, Illinois. Since no one had been specifically assigned the responsibility for co-ordination of public relations, it was decided that a public relations committee would be established under the direction of the assistant superintendent of schools. I was in charge of the committee and was directed to report to the assistant superintendent of schools.
Since the Illinois Education Association had already set up a series of training sessions for Region 34, it was decided to take advantage of these …
The Need, Development And Implementation Of A Student/Parent Handbook For Warrensburg-Latham High School, Roger T. Mitchell
The Need, Development And Implementation Of A Student/Parent Handbook For Warrensburg-Latham High School, Roger T. Mitchell
Masters Theses
The project selected for completion of my degree evolved from numerous situations experienced during my first year as Assistant Principal at Warrensburg-Latham High School, where I was primarily responsible for dealing with student discipline.
Early in the school year it became evident that the existing student handbook was not as diverse or explicit as I felt should be necessary. In continual discussions with the principal it was concluded that a new student handbook should be implemented for the following school term. I operated through the remainder of the 1978-79 school year with the existing laminated folder type handbook, which consistently …
Administrative Internship, Mt. Zion Community School District #3, James D. Price
Administrative Internship, Mt. Zion Community School District #3, James D. Price
Masters Theses
Ideally, the best approach to learning administration for educational institutions is to observe the work of administrators in the field. While it is overly pretentious to advocate ascertaining all functions of one office, it is possible to develop a working knowledge of the primary responsibilities involved in several positions, namely, the central office administration.
Under the direction of the Superintendent of Schools, the Assistant Superintendent, and the Director of Guidance for Mt. Zion Schools this writer has acquired such working knowledge. Although the basic theory for role development of each of these positions is transmitted in this paper, it is …

Masters Theses
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The purpose of this field study was to develop a better understanding of the policies, rules and regulations of the Selmaville Community Consolidated School District No. 10. The Board of Education has authorized this revision of the District No. 10 School Board Policies.
Educational policy making has long been regarded as the most important function of the Board of Education. This field experience study paper examines the role audiovisual services should play as part of a learning resources center in a community college. The specific institution chosen was Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, Illinois. Moraine Valley is one of thirty-nine community colleges in the state of Illinois. Organized along a "cluster college" concept, the institution has worked toward providing a varied educational program for its constituents.
The Learning Resources Center was organized to provide support for the instructional program. Originally comprised of four separate administrative units, i.e., library, audiovisual center, learning laboratory, and study skills center, the growth …

The Effect Of Reality Therapy As An Administrative Model Upon The Organizational Climate And Educational Outcomes Of Selected Elementary Schools, Clarence U. Dunbebin
The Effect Of Reality Therapy As An Administrative Model Upon The Organizational Climate And Educational Outcomes Of Selected Elementary Schools, Clarence U. Dunbebin
Dissertations
Problem. Organizations of nearly every type succeed in fulfilling their mission best when they are productive and effective. Changes in societal outlook have made administrative demands that older leadership theory does not satisfy. It was the purpose of this study to determine the effect the use of Reality Therapy as an administrative model would have upon leader behaviors and organizational climate.
Method. The Solomon Four-Group Design was used. The Profile of a School, Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire-Form XII, and Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills-Form T were used to measure change. Four methods of statistical analysis were used: (1) univariate one-way …
A Comparison Of The Role Expectations Of The Chairperson Of The Board Of Trustees Of Selected Universities In Michigan As Perceived By Five Status Groups, John Evans Hill
A Comparison Of The Role Expectations Of The Chairperson Of The Board Of Trustees Of Selected Universities In Michigan As Perceived By Five Status Groups, John Evans Hill
Dissertations
Problem. The university board chairperson performs many tasks in his/her position. Howeve4r, it appears that there is a lack of consensus on the chairperson's role. Therefore, this study was concerned with the role expectations of the board chairperson of the university as perceived by the board chairperson, university presidents, vice-presidents for academic affairs, vice-presidents for financial affiars, and other university board members. Is there any correlation between what the board chairperson actually does and what he/she should do as perceived by the five groups? It was expected that a clarification of the role expectations would provide useful guidelines for improving …

A Conceptual Model For The Professional Practice Of Seventh-Day Adventist Educational Administration Based On The Proclamations Of The Three Angels Of Revelation 14, Rilla Taylor
Dissertations
Problem. Since the Seventh-day Adventist administrator must define a suitable mode of practice, the question must be addressed; does the Seventh-day Adventist religion require a distinctive mode of practice or simply suggest a characteristic approach to a common mode of practice?
Method. While the Seventh-day Adventists share many beliefs in common with all Christians, their most distinctive belief is found in the messages of three angels described in Revelation 14:6-12. Therefore, these messages are examined to determine whether or not they contain concepts which lead to a characteristic mode of administrative practice. Firstly, the three angels' messages are …
