Relevance And Higher Education: Proceedings Of The Third Annual Meeting Of The National Collegiate Honors Council, 1968, Walter D. Weir

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs

The papers in this volume were presented at the third annual meeting of the National Collegiate Honors Council at the Olympic Hotel in Seattle, Washington, October 18-20, 1968. The papers indicate our focus on the problems of the relevance of curricula to learning and the relevance of higher education to the world. Black and white students alike urged us to make our programs, our curricula, and our concerns more relevant to the moral and social issues of our time, more relevant to a truly liberal education.

Clinical Teaching: Some Experimental Observations, Ralph Scott Jan 1968

Clinical Teaching: Some Experimental Observations, Ralph Scott

Faculty Publications

A study attempted to measure some effects of a 2-week postbaccalaureate workshop on clinical teaching (teaching which provides children with individualized materials and procedures) and to assess administrative encouragement and appreciation of clinical experimentation and innovation. An experimental group of 20 experienced elementary teachers who had participated in the summer workshop and a control group of 49 who had enrolled too late for admission were invited to participate in a clinical teaching experiment. Hypothesis 1; that a higher proportion of the experimental group would agree to participate in a project requiring a clinical report; was not supported. Hypothesis 2 was …

Trends In Educational Thinking Respecting Classroom Control As Revealed Through Professional Periodicals 1960-1965, Jane Stevenson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the disciplinary trends in educational practice as reported in professional journals comprising the period 1960-1965 and emphasizing, particularly, discipline of pupils in elementary schools. Educational movements of the past concerning discipline have directly influenced that phase of present-day education. By considering the historical background of the problem, current conceptions and practices could be more adequately interpreted.

A Study Of The Motivation Of Students Who Completed The Junior Year Of High School, And Who Are Members Of Socially, Economically And Culturally Deprived Areas., Maxwell J. Ihrig

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Project Upward Bound was a program initiated by the Office of Economic Opportunity to wage war on talent waste in our high schools throughout the United States today. The program itself was really a pre-college program for low income youngsters. It was perhaps best summed up in the following quotations from Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, at the 1965 White House Conference on Education: "Millions of youngsters from impoverished backgrounds are caught in a downward spiral of second-rate education, functional illiteracy, delinquency, dependency and despair. How can we halt this tragic waste of human resources? How can we turn it …
