Faculty Developers As Change Facilitators: The Concerns-Based Adoption Model, Lynn Evans, Sheila Chauvin Jan 1993

Faculty Developers As Change Facilitators: The Concerns-Based Adoption Model, Lynn Evans, Sheila Chauvin

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Faculty members involved in efforts to improve their teaching, as well as the faculty developers who work with them, progress through natural, predictable stages of concern which, if understood, can form the basis of appropriate interventions. In this article the authors examine a framework that faculty developers and leaders of change efforts can use in their roles as change facilitators. This framework for understanding and planning educational change is part of the Concerns-Based Adoption Model (CBAM) developed by Hall, Hord, and others at the University of Texas at Austin Research and Development Center.

Contemporary School Administration: An Introduction, Theodore J. Kowalski

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

Contemporary School Administration presents a pragmatic approach to school administration as a career choice, offering a broad, comprehensive overview of educational leadership in both public and private schools.

The initial chapters provide a foundation for understanding leadership and management, the primary components of administration. Common questions students ask regarding academic study, licensure, job opportunities, income, and career development are featured in the early chapters. The text is also unique in that it covers critical topics ignored in most other introductory books. Examples of these topics include private schools, women and minorities in administration, and communication. Content does not overlap with …

Findings also revealed that central office staff and principals, for the most part, perceive that the superintendents and board chairpersons were supportive of site-based management programs. One hundred and eighty-one educators, including board chairpersons, responded to a fifty-four item questionnaire. …

A mini-school was set up in Cedar River Elementary School in Maple Valley, Washington. The mini-school will keep the same students and teachers together for a three-year period of time. There will be a fourth, fifth, and sixth grade classroom, each with its own teacher. Research suggests that students in small schools perceive a closer, warmer relationship with their teachers, fellow students and other adults and a stronger connection with the school. This project presents a justification for and a description of the mini-school. The only conclusions reached come from the development of the mini-school, not in an evaluation of …

Collegiality Or, Talking With Women, Joanna Rotté

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines collegiality within academic governance, framing women administrators as agents of organizational change amid prevailing male dominated power structures. Drawing on feminist theory, theatre studies, and personal narrative, it analyzes how corporate managerial models permeate higher education culture, marginalizing female leadership and constraining collaborative practice. An anecdotal case drawn from a university theatre production illustrates the tensions that emerge when conventional authority expectations confront egalitarian ideals, revealing persistent gendered communication, objectification, and professional isolation. Through critical reflection, the discussion elucidates the influence of language, affect, and institutional memory in maintaining patriarchal norms, yet highlights the potential for transformative …

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines structural and cultural obstacles that speech communication departments face when recruiting, hiring, and retaining minority and women faculty within U S higher education. Discussion highlights the tension between legal compliance and attitudinal change, explores how tenure criteria emphasizing quantity over quality of research can disadvantage underrepresented scholars, and outlines strategies such as early mentoring, targeted doctoral recruitment, inclusive search processes, community integration support, and …

Coming Up Short: No Quick Fixes, Elmer E. Baker Jr Jan 1990

Coming Up Short: No Quick Fixes, Elmer E. Baker Jr

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article critiques the belief that minority faculty underrepresentation can be remedied through quick fixes, showing instead that entrenched structural and cultural forces require sustained, systemic responses. Drawing on national doctorate statistics, affirmative action surveys, and illustrative programs at Duke, Bucknell, and Stanford, this article traces how shrinking doctoral pipelines, lucrative private sector opportunities, rising tuition, and inadequate precollege preparation erode the supply of prospective scholars of color. It further reveals that once hired, minority professors encounter disproportionate advising loads, heavy committee service, isolation, and tenure expectations emphasizing quantitative publication metrics. Employing perspectives from higher education administration, diversity research, organizational …
