Dropping Out Of High School: An Inside Look, Michelle Fine Oct 1985

Dropping Out Of High School: An Inside Look, Michelle Fine

Publications and Research

In September, 1984, I began an ethnography of student life in and out of a New York City public high school to figure out why urban students drop out of high school at such extraordinary rates. By December, why urban students stay in high school through graduation struck me as an equally compelling question.

The Community Service Class At The Small College: A Medium For Discovery, Joe Ortiz Oct 1985

The Community Service Class At The Small College: A Medium For Discovery, Joe Ortiz

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article argues that community service classes provide small college communication departments with an important means of serving external audiences while simultaneously advancing internal departmental goals. It defines community service classes as credit or noncredit offerings open to campus and community participants, typically organized around practical concerns such as family interaction, workplace communication, or managerial effectiveness. The discussion emphasizes that these classes attract voluntary participants who seek immediate application of communication concepts, creating favorable conditions for engagement and for shaping informed public perceptions of the discipline. The article contends that such offerings can function as laboratories for curriculum development, allowing …

Developing An Anglo-American Communication Program, Terence Jackson Oct 1985

Developing An Anglo-American Communication Program, Terence Jackson

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay analyzes the development of an American style communication program within a British educational context. It begins by describing the structure of further and higher education in England and Wales and explains how traditions of vocational training and liberal education intersect within these systems. The discussion outlines the limited presence of communication as an academic field in Britain, noting that research in interpersonal, organizational, and mass communication exists but remains dispersed across sociology, psychology, and management. The essay then examines the challenges of creating a comprehensive communication curriculum at Warnborough College, including the scarcity of disciplinary resources, limited availability …

Promoting Vitality After Tenure, John Lee Jellicorse, James G. Tilley Aug 1985

Promoting Vitality After Tenure, John Lee Jellicorse, James G. Tilley

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article analyzes the causes of declining productivity among tenured faculty and outlines strategies for sustaining long term professional vitality. The authors identify a critical period following the award of tenure during which faculty may experience diminished motivation due to unclear goals, institutional incentives focused narrowly on pre tenure performance, and inconsistent evaluation of teaching, research, and service. Structural problems such as outdated workload models, poorly defined faculty development policies, and reliance on differentiated staffing intensify the risk of stagnation. Drawing on motivational theory, life span development research, and ERG theory, the authors argue that faculty growth depends on satisfying …

Speech/Language Pathology And Audiology: A Justifiable Anomaly Within A College Of Arts And Sciences?, Fred D. Minifie Aug 1985

Speech/Language Pathology And Audiology: A Justifiable Anomaly Within A College Of Arts And Sciences?, Fred D. Minifie

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay defends the place of speech language pathology and audiology within colleges of arts and sciences by arguing that the discipline’s academic legitimacy derives from its scientific study of human communication rather than its professional training functions. The author traces tensions between broad liberal arts missions and programs perceived as narrowly vocational, noting that clinical training alone cannot justify departmental status in a university setting. Instead, the field’s essential contribution lies in advancing knowledge about normal and disordered communication and in grounding clinical practice in research based understanding. The discussion critiques programs that emphasize service delivery at the expense …

Developing A Program Justification: Strategies For Locating And Valuing The Discipline, Ronald L. Applbaum Aug 1985

Developing A Program Justification: Strategies For Locating And Valuing The Discipline, Ronald L. Applbaum

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay evaluates arguments offered by four communication subfields regarding their place within the liberal arts and proposes a broader strategy for program justification in contemporary higher education. The author contends that while the contributing essays aim to demonstrate disciplinary value, they pursue divergent goals and do not provide persuasive grounds for resource allocation by senior administrators. Situating the discussion within shifting institutional priorities, the essay notes that colleges have increasingly blended liberal and vocational learning in response to changing student demand and external pressures. The author argues that communication’s diversity can be a strength, as the discipline engages both …
