To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Balanced somewhere between thinking and doing is the need for verification by experimentation. We should never move too far away from the spirit of inquiry which drives us to examine the fundamental assumptions of our professions. If our elegant models and programs have no grounding in reality, they will fail us in practice. Therefore, we include a section on research efforts and encourage others to share their findings with our readers.
An Investigation Of Career Development By Community College And University Women : Importance Of Contributors To Advancement Into Higher Education Administration, Lynda A. Kuyper
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Surveys of women in higher education administrative positions that identified factors which may contribute to career development have been conducted. However, the literature revealed little information regarding the importance placed on those factors by women in higher education administrative positions. The purpose of this study was to determine the importance of selected contributors to career development of women in higher education administration. Data were gathered by a mailed questionnaire to a sample of women administrators employed in Florida state supported community colleges and universities. The 343 useable returned questionnaires represented a 65.5% response rate and 51.3% of the total population. …

A Study Of Adult Undergraduate Students Attending Eastern Illinois University, Huey-Li Li
Masters Theses
Adult students over the age of 25 have comprised a significant proportion of student body in traditionally youth-oriented institutions of higher education. At Eastern, adult students comprised 7.2 percent of the population of undergraduate students in the Fall, 1986. Based on an institutional survey, this study attempted to gain a deeper understanding about adult students' academic and personal experiences of returning to a four-year university.
One-fourth of the adult students (N=183) were randomly selected and invited to participate in this study. A total of 104 adult students returned the questionnaires. Participants' responses were categorized into six groups in accordance with …

Community Education: Processes And Programs, Theodore J. Kowalski
Community Education: Processes And Programs, Theodore J. Kowalski
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
"Community education is on the threshold of a major breakthrough. It has captured the imagination of both educational and lay leaders throughout the U.S."
Although these words are an appropriate description of community education today, they were written by V. M. Kerensky 14 years ago. An idea that never took hold to the degree its advocates predicted, community education, nevertheless, refuses to die. Over the past two or three years, the interest of educationalleaders has been stimulated once again by this proposal for expanding the mission and decision-making processes of public schools. In 49 of the 50 states (Hawaii being …

A Study Of Job Satisfaction As Perceived By The Certified Staff In Florida Public Elementary Schools, George A. Taylor
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to survey the subject certified staff of Florida public elementary schools to determine how elements of Herzberg’s Motivation-Hygiene Theory were perceived as being met in their current school employment. The descriptive study utilized an instrument that listed each of the 16 job factors in Herzberg’s theory. The instrument was designed to allow subjects to mark each job factor as contributing to their job satisfaction, neutral, or contributing to their job dissatisfaction. The instrument also had areas to record various biographical data regarding the subjects. The survey was conducted on a randomly selected subject group …

Training In Organizations: Career Opportunities For Communication, Jan W. Kelly
Training In Organizations: Career Opportunities For Communication, Jan W. Kelly
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines career opportunities in organizational training as an emerging professional path for communication graduates amid declining academic employment prospects. It contextualizes the rise of corporate training within broader shifts in higher education and labor markets, noting that employers increasingly provide internal instruction and invest substantial resources in employee development. A telephone survey of 109 trainers in Silicon Valley was conducted using both open and closed question formats, and the resulting data were analyzed through frequency counts and qualitative categorization. Findings indicate that most respondents work as in house trainers and hold college degrees, yet relatively few possess academic …

Communication In The Health Professions: A Survey, Richard N. Armstrong, Gordon R. Owen, Phillip Mcfarland
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article reports findings from a national survey examining communication training among nurses, dentists, and physicians. A ten item questionnaire was mailed to 1800 members of three major professional associations, yielding 513 usable responses. Over half of respondents had received formal communication instruction, most commonly nurses, followed by dentists and physicians. Training formats included dedicated courses, communication units within other courses, and in service workshops. Listening, interviewing, and nonverbal communication emerged as the most frequently taught and most valued skills. Notably, most training was delivered by instructors outside the communication discipline, raising questions about curricular coordination and disciplinary visibility. A …

A Study Of The Truants Alternative Program In The Clay-Jasper-Richland Educational Service Region, Southeastern, Illinois, Larry Rinehart
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine if the Clay-Jasper-Richland Truants Alternative Program had reduced truancy and chronic truancy in the region during the 1984-85 school year and to identify possibly needed modifications in the Truants Alternative Program.
A review of the research and literature revealed that truancy is a complex problem that may require the treatment of the student, school environment, and general environment. Only after a careful evaluation of a student's situation can a plan be formulated for remediating the truancy problem.
Statistics were obtained on the numbers of truants, chronic truants, and student population in each …
