A Description Of Merger Applied To The Montana State University Context, Stephen L. Coffman
A Description Of Merger Applied To The Montana State University Context, Stephen L. Coffman
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article reports on the description of merger applied to the Montana State University context. Eastern was renamed on July 1, 1994, as Montana State University (MSU)-Billings. The Billings Vocational Technical Institution was then merged with MSU-Billings, and renamed the College of Technology. There is considerable debate on campus as to the nature of the merger. There is also potential benefit for students in this merger. MSU-Billings should be better able to attract the best students if enough of these positive outcomes are realized. The final positive outcome of the merger to be presented concerns the public. If history and …
Let's Get Political: Strategies For Departmental Survival And Growth, Isa N. Engleberg
Let's Get Political: Strategies For Departmental Survival And Growth, Isa N. Engleberg
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article reports on the seminar entitled Strengthening the Unit: Strategies for Survival and Growth, sponsored by the Association for Communication Administration (ACA). The ACA seminar on Strengthening the Unit raised the above question given recent threats to abolish or cut well-established and prestigious communication departments. The ACA seminar provided an opportunity for representatives from threatened departments to tell their stories and share their hard-learned lessons. Strong leadership is critical to a department's survival and growth. Asking faculty members to make professional development a priority is a hollow request if the leader is not an active professional. Strong and politically …
Strategies For The Communications Unit: How Can We Become Central To The University And Its Mission?, Ellen Wartella
Strategies For The Communications Unit: How Can We Become Central To The University And Its Mission?, Ellen Wartella
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article presents the author's comments on reasons for the perception that communication units are not central to the University and its mission. First, our name itself is a problem. This can mean that one studies mass media, as I do, or it may refer to scholars of interpersonal communication, rhetorical analysis, cultural studies, organizational studies, or a variety of other subspecialties. Second, this lack of unity and intellectual diversity, often poses special political problems. The political battles across communication programs on campuses is only one of our on-campus political problems. Finally, perhaps at the root of our battles about …

The Impact Of Prekindergarten Participation Upon Academic Placement, Mary Suddarth
The Impact Of Prekindergarten Participation Upon Academic Placement, Mary Suddarth
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine whether participation in the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Prekindergarten Program for Children At Risk of Academic Failure had impact on a child's future academic placement. Current uncertainty regarding continued ISBE or federal funding of programs makes such a longitudinal study imperative. This study examined the 1995-1996 academic placement, including additional resources required, i.e., Title 1, speech, or learning disabled services, for 40 children who participated in the 1990-1991 Hamilton-Jefferson Counties Educational Service Region cooperative prekindergarten program in Jefferson County. Results indicated that all children reached expected placement, regardless of one …

An Evaluation Of The Behavior Disorders Classroom Program Of The Wabash And Ohio Valley Special Education District, Daniel J. Allen
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine the relative effectiveness and desirability of identified key components of the behavior disorders program delivered by the Wabash and Ohio Valley Special Education District in southeastern Illinois. Sixty-one school superintendents, building principals, and local coordinators of special education responded to a survey addressing key components of the behavior disorders program: technical assistance, timeliness of the Individualized Education Program process, thoroughness of the Individualized Education Program process, academic remediation, behavioral remediation, transition coordination, and followup services. The results revealed very little discrepancy between each of the groups of administrators according to their responses …

A Study Of Secondary School Principals' Perceptions Regarding Current Teacher Evaluation Procedures In Three Midwestern States, Beth A. Saiki-Olsen
Masters Theses
In recent years, new methods of evaluating teachers have been introduced and recommended by educational experts.
This study was conducted to determine the methods and procedures currently used in three midwestern states to evaluate secondary education teachers and to investigate secondary school principals' perceptions regarding those methods and procedures.
The study, which took place during the spring of 1996, included a survey of a random sample of 300 secondary school principals in Illinois, Iowa and Indiana through the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
One hundred and fifty-six principals responded to the survey which found that although principals agreed that …
Self-Reported Teacher Stress And Perception Of Administrative Support, Janice Lyn Sjostrand
Self-Reported Teacher Stress And Perception Of Administrative Support, Janice Lyn Sjostrand
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to determine the existence of a relationship between levels of teacher occupational stress and perception of administrative support. Six secondary schools were chosen from six randomly selected school districts stratified by size and geographic location. The predictor variable was administrative support; the criterion variable was level of stress. Instrumentation included the Teacher Stress Inventory (TSI) and the Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaire Form XII (LBDQ Form XII). Ten factors of stress were measured: five were manifestations of stress, and five were sources of stress. The subjects, the majority of whom were females, did not exhibit …

Method. The researcher developed a survey and mailed it to a randomly selected stratified sample of 500 teachers in one- and two-room schools in the Seventh-day Adventist educational system in the United States and Canada. Two hundred eighty surveys were returned; 276 were used in the data analysis. Descriptive statistics give a demographic picture of these teachers--the practices used, their perceived levels of expertise, methods of grouping students for instruction, and their assessment of multi-grade students' …

Special Service Needs Of Adult Students Attending Weekend College At Western Michigan University, Patricia A. Dolly
Dissertations
This dissertation examines the needs of the adult learner and how or if these needs are being met in the Campus Ill/Weekend College program at Western Michigan University. Specifically, factors that explain the rise of adult learners on college campuses and demographic information on this rising student population are presented. In addition, the reasons for returning to school and differences between traditional and nontraditional students are examined. Institutional, situational, and dispositional barriers confronting adult students are discussed; a model is put forth along with strategies to overcome barriers offered.

Chaos Theory In Educational Systems: Principals' Perceptions Of Sensitive Dependence On Initial Conditions, Suzan B. Baker
Chaos Theory In Educational Systems: Principals' Perceptions Of Sensitive Dependence On Initial Conditions, Suzan B. Baker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the characteristic of chaos theory called sensitive dependence on initial conditions or butterfly effect in schools and school systems. The purpose of the study was to develop insight into school systems by determining if categories or factors of behaviors or decisions have been observed in school systems which are sensitive to initial conditions and are therefore likely to produce exponential effects. A modified critical incident technique was used to collect data from experienced principals in three moderate sized regions in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia. Participants reported incidents that were sensitive to initial conditions during interviews. The …

Prediction Of Student Completion Of An Associate Degree Radiologic Technology Program, Donna R. Shehane
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the admission/selection process of the Radiologic Technology Program at East Tennessee State University to ascertain predictive validity of the admission process and to identify specific indicators leading to program completion. The population for this investigation consisted of 510 students who had applied to East Tennessee State University and the Radiologic Technology Program from 1991 through 1993. Data were collected from institutional and program academic records. Correlation research was chosen to establish validity. One-way Analysis of Variance and t-test were applied to investigate different admission parameters and discriminate analysis was completed due …
