I am proud to introduce the eighth annual Southwestern Oklahoma State University Fact Book. It provides a ready source of information to answer frequently asked questions about the University and its operations. Unless otherwise noted, the information in this Fact Book came from computer-generated reports that are printed following the tenth class day of each fall semester. Because of student fluctuations during the semester, numbers will not match other published enrollment numbers that may be based on enrollment at the end of a semester.

A School-To-Work Transition Manual For Secondary Administrators, Ronald Dean Woodruff
A School-To-Work Transition Manual For Secondary Administrators, Ronald Dean Woodruff
All Graduate Projects
The School-to-Work Opportunities Act was designed to improve student learning, in-school retention, and transition to the workplace by improving the quality and relevance of education for all students. School-to-work uses experiences that integrate school-based and work-based learning and improve students' knowledge of and access to career opportunities. Administered by the U.S. Departments of Education and Labor, the School-to-Work Opportunities Act gives States seed money to design and implement their own comprehensive School-to-Work system. States and localities are given broad latitude in designing their own systems so long as each includes the Act's three components: Work-based learning, school-based learning, and connecting …
Departmental Excellence: Constituencies In Tension, Ronald C. Arnett, Janie M. Harden Fritz
Departmental Excellence: Constituencies In Tension, Ronald C. Arnett, Janie M. Harden Fritz
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article explores the question of departmental excellence within historicity and temporality and the political demands of multiple constituencies. If one accepts excellence as a rhetorical construct of political significance for a college campus, then one requires knowledge of the primary constituencies shaping this political debate. The eventual political outcome is shaped through the interplay of three constituencies: the discipline, the local campus and the larger public. The task for every department that wants to pursue excellence is to know, understand and operate within the hidden curriculum of a campus that socializes faculty to the ongoing mission of that particular …
Employer Expectations Of Newly-Hired Communication Graduates, D. F. Treadwell, Jill B. Treadwell
Employer Expectations Of Newly-Hired Communication Graduates, D. F. Treadwell, Jill B. Treadwell
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article examines employers' expectations and perceptions of communication new hires at three points in the school-to-work transition, the initial job application, and the beginning and the end of the first year. This study focuses on writing and related conceptual abilities because for most communication new hires they are the foundation of both a successful job application, and therefore employers' first impressions, and of subsequent performance evaluations and progress. In conclusion, broad generalizations about the communication abilities of communication new hires may be unwarranted because performance expectations and the level and types of assessment vary with the type of position, …
Protecting Communication Departments: Reflections On The Nebraska Experience, Lee Ronald, William Seiler
Protecting Communication Departments: Reflections On The Nebraska Experience, Lee Ronald, William Seiler
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article reflects on the vulnerabilities and strengths of communication departments at the University of Nebraska. The relatively small size of communication departments makes them especially vulnerable to administrative budget cutters. For a complex set of reasons, particular disciplines have become defining elements of universities in the U.S. Unfortunately, communication departments have not achieved such status. The professional organizations need to do more than offer the occasional workshop, they ought to make a concerted effort to help communications departments maximize the discipline's opportunity and make the field of communication valuable to students and become ever more essential to the university.

From Paper To Praxis: Advancing The Discipline In A Small College Environment, Alfred G. Mueller Ii, Delmas S. Crisp Jr.
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article proposes the advancement of communications discipline at a small college in Georgia. In the small liberal arts college, one tends to find many faculty members who have had little or no experience with departments of communication. It is also plausible that some approaches to the study of communication may be deemed unsuitable in a small liberal arts setting. To meet the demands of the millennial technological environment, the dean of the college decided to reexamine the communication major in terms of its scope and function on campus. The proposals for the advancement of the discipline are discussed herein.

A Study Of The Perceptions Of Students, Staff, And Parents Regarding Conflict At Mary Miller Junior High School, Georgetown-Ridge Farm Community Unit School District # 4, Georgetown, Illinois, Robert A. Rice
Masters Theses
Too often in schools across the country students and teachers have felt unsafe. Students and teachers have been threatened physically, verbally, and have experienced violence. Besides creating fears, violence in schools has diverted energy and resources from instruction. The researcher believed that based on recent national happenings regarding school violence, it was important to assess the school environment at Mary Miller Junior High School to identify if any problems existed regarding safety at school. It is not surprising that one of the National Education Goals for the year 2000 was to establish safe, disciplined, and drug-free schools that offer an …

A Study Of The Elements For Effective Implementation Of A Full-Day Kindergarten Program At Armstrong-Ellis Grade School, Jamie Ann Dorsey
Masters Theses
This study was conducted to determine the effective elements needed to implement a full-day kindergarten program at Armstrong-Ellis Grade School, a rural district located in northwestern Vermilion County. It was designed by first looking at how to implement change in a system. After the steps for change were determined, the elements for effective implementation were incorporated into the change process. These elements were established by analyzing the related literature and research.
It was determined that to introduce change within a system a three-step process was needed. These steps are mobilization, implementation, and institutionalization. All three steps are examined in the …

An Educational Dilemma: To Touch Or Not To Touch, Ronald G. Jeffries
All Graduate Projects
The purpose of this study was to aid both pre-service and in-service teachers in solving the dilenuna of whether or not to touch students in the classroom environment. The harmful effects and consequences of the use of inappropriate touch by teachers, which tend to cause teachers and administrators to say, "Hands off!", were examined. However, numerous studies were researched which support the use of appropriate touch in teaching children. In addition, educators from fourteen schools in North Central Washington were surveyed to determine the consensus of whether or not teachers today continue to employ touch and for what purposes. The …

Theses and Dissertations
This study focuses on the effect of orientation upon the retention of transfer students at a metropolitan university in the mid-south. The study was longitudinal in nature and utilized both a chi-square test to evaluate the difference in retention between transfer students who did and did not attend a new student orientation program, and a logistic regression to control for the effects of other well known influences of retention. The predictive model developed accurately identified 81.69% of persisters and nonpersisters. New student orientation, age, previous college GPA, and declaring a major were found to be significant predictors of retention; however …

Annual Reports
For far too long, too many educational environments have been schooling environments focused on teacher- delivered and student-received information rather than learning environments focused on teacher- facilitated and student-generated knowledge. This must change. Young people are capable of extraordinary achievements and significant contributions, and it is the responsibility of educators, parents, taxpayers, policymakers and the business community to provide learning environments that make this possible. With your continuing support, IMSA will work continuously, diligently and resolutely to model and help others become such a learning environment.

Proactively And In The Heat Of The Moment: Administrative Advice For Communication Instructors To Help Students Cope With Crisis, Jennifer H. Waldeck
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article provides advice on helping students cope with crisis. The first section discusses communication research that is pertinent to helping students be prepared proactively to deal with relationship crises. Second, it focuses on strategies that teachers of interpersonal communication survey courses may use to deal with students who are already victims of these situations, and as a result, may be emotionally troubled, abusing drugs or alcohol, or have suicidal feelings. Although communication faculty often are perceived to be immediate and thus approached by troubled students, most are rarely qualified to dispense or perform counseling duties. Recommendations are made in …
