Self-Mutilation : A Misunderstood Behavior, Carmon Rasmussen Jan 2006

Self-Mutilation : A Misunderstood Behavior, Carmon Rasmussen

Graduate Research Papers

Self-mutilation is most accurately described as the intentional harm of one's own body. Individuals engage in this behavior as a means of coping with intense emotions. The act of harming one's own body provides a release of endorphins, which provides the self-mutilator with a sense of relief. This behavior is becoming problematic within the adolescent population and a growing concern for those in the field of school counseling. School counselors need to have a strong grasp of the characteristics, functions, and intervention strategies involved with self-mutilation to be effective advocates for this population of students.

The Utilization Of Gender, Retention, Ses And Steep Scores To Predict Reading Mastery, Lisa Lee Adams

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between gender, retention, SES and STEEP scores to predict reading mastery. Second grade students’ records were reviewed to obtain demographic information. SAT 9 scores were used to measure students' reading mastery. SES was measured and defined by approved applications for free or reduced lunch for the 2004-2005 school year. Retention was defined as the number of students previously retained. Logistic regression was used to determine the predictive validity of gender, retention, SES and STEEP scores dependent on SAT 9 reading mastery. Gender, retention, SES and STEEP scores were entered as …

Factors Present At Enrollment Of College Freshmen That Predict Placement In Developmental Courses At Select Private Institutions, Mary Ann Thorn Jan 2006

Factors Present At Enrollment Of College Freshmen That Predict Placement In Developmental Courses At Select Private Institutions, Mary Ann Thorn

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Attrition of college freshmen due, in part, to the lack of academic preparedness upon enrolling in college is an issue facing college and university administrators. Chief academic officers cannot ignore the fact that 30% of all students enrolling in postsecondary institutions require some form of “developmental” coursework. Institutional leaders need to be aware of predictors that determine the student’s need for enrollment in developmental courses and factors that influence student persistence. Administrators must focus on both the characteristics and experiences of students prior to college, as well as their experiences inside the classroom, and how these variables interrelate. To understand …

Writing And American Rhetoric (English 204 H1), Bebe Nickolai Jan 2006

Writing And American Rhetoric (English 204 H1), Bebe Nickolai

Honors in Practice Online Archive

This seminar develops students’ skills in writing argumentative essays and speeches. Students examine the American rhetorical tradition in texts ranging from sermons of the Great Awakening to recent Presidential addresses. These texts serve as models as students write arguments demonstrating their knowledge of rhetorical strategies. Through a variety of written assignments, students discover their own most effective voices as writers. When students finish the class, they should be able to write effective argumentative essays based on research. Students will participate in small group work, peer editing, conferences with the instructor, and presentations.

In this paper, we discuss how we came to restructure the honors program at Dominican University of California and fit it more closely to the institutional mission and Dominican values. The mission statement of Dominican University of California reads: “We are an independent, learner-centered, international university which interweaves Dominican values, the liberal arts and sciences and the skills and knowledge necessary to live and work in an independent world.” The four Dominican values are study, service, community, and reflection. Our primary interest is the way adaptation of an honors program to its unique campus mission and values can strengthen the …

The Advantages Of A Reciprocal Relationship Between Faculty Development And Organizational Development In Higher Education, Leora Baron Jan 2006

The Advantages Of A Reciprocal Relationship Between Faculty Development And Organizational Development In Higher Education, Leora Baron

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

No campus organization exists in a vacuum, nor can it afford to be an island unto itself. Thus, the functions of faculty development need to be viewed in the context of the entire institution. The effectiveness of faculty development, and sometimes its very survival, are dependent to a large extent on its ability to influence and participate in organizational development outside of its own confines. This chapter suggests practical ways in which faculty development can contribute to, and indeed benefit from, a reciprocal relationship with institutional organizational development.

Creating Engaged Departments: A Program For Organizational And Faculty Development, Kevin J. Kecskes, Sherril B. Gelmon, Amy Spring Jan 2006

Creating Engaged Departments: A Program For Organizational And Faculty Development, Kevin J. Kecskes, Sherril B. Gelmon, Amy Spring

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Portland State University encourages faculty participation in service-learning by providing faculty with individual incentives to support and reward them. Now, in recognition of this central role of the department in higher education, administrators interested in creating sustained civic engagement initiatives on campus are looking to the department as a strategic leverage point for change. This chapter investigates a yearlong engaged department initiative and finds that a collective approach can (re)connect individual faculty to their initial motivations for engaging in the profession, to a community of scholars, to their students, and also to their surrounding community.

Helping Faculty Learn To Teach Better And “Smarter” Through Sequenced Activities, Barbara J. Millis Jan 2006

Helping Faculty Learn To Teach Better And “Smarter” Through Sequenced Activities, Barbara J. Millis

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Faculty developers can help faculty learn to intentionally sequence assignments and activities to promote greater learning when they understand the convergent research—with its practical implications for teaching—on how people learn, on deep learning, and on cooperative learning. Such a sequence includes a motivating out-of-class assignment (homework), in-class “processing” that includes active learning and student interactions, and feedback and assessment, often given in multiple ways. This approach is modeled through two examples using graphic organizers.
