Practical Problems Facing Communication Administrators, Thelma D. Curl Apr 1985

Practical Problems Facing Communication Administrators, Thelma D. Curl

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article outlines two central challenges confronting communication administrators in financially constrained, state supported institutions. The first problem is the impact of budget reductions on staffing, curriculum, and faculty development. Shrinking appropriations and limited external resources have led to hiring freezes, increased class sizes, teaching overloads, and reliance on part time instructors. These conditions weaken faculty morale, complicate promotion and tenure processes, reduce opportunities for research and travel, and curtail scholarships, cultural programming, and curricular innovation. Fiscal pressures further force departments to rely on FTE driven decisions that may jeopardize upper level instruction and student retention. The second problem concerns …

Attracting Liberal Arts Majors In The Eighties And Nineties, Philip G. Hill Apr 1985

Attracting Liberal Arts Majors In The Eighties And Nineties, Philip G. Hill

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the declining number of students majoring in liberal arts disciplines during the late twentieth century and situates the issue within long term demographic and economic trends. It explains how the contraction of the traditional college age population, combined with rising student preference for vocational programs, has placed pressure on departments dependent on Bachelor of Arts enrollments. The discussion notes that liberal arts fields face intensified competition from expanding professional and technical programs and that these patterns are reinforced by public concerns about employability. The article further identifies obstacles specific to theatre, such as limited exposure in secondary …

A Nation At Risk: One Year After, R. R. Allen Apr 1985

A Nation At Risk: One Year After, R. R. Allen

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the impact of the National Commission on Excellence in Education’s report on the perceived decline in American educational quality. It begins by noting the unusual public visibility achieved by the report and reviews the indicators of national risk identified by the Commission, including declining achievement scores, functional illiteracy among adolescents, and widespread remedial instruction across higher education, the military, and industry. The article then surveys potential causes of this decline, ranging from weak graduation and admissions requirements to inadequate teacher preparation, poor instructional materials, insufficient parental support, and diminished professional morale. The discussion shifts to the responsibilities …

A Study Of Effects Of Persistence And Nonpersistence In Mastery Learning Psi Remedial English In A Two-Year College, John H. Corbin

Dissertations

This study examines students with diagnosed writing deficiencies who persisted (Group II, n = 350) and provided evidence of mastery of the subject matter in a "Mastery Learning" remedial English course designed after the Keller plan of Personalized System of Instruction (PSI) at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. Their subsequent achievement on three criterion variables--Grade in Freshman Writing, Total Credit Hours Earned over a Two Year Period, and Overall Grade Point Average--is compared with achievement of three other groups. Group I (Placed Out, n = 84) consists of students with superior placement test scores who enrolled in Freshman Writing without remedial …

A Survey On Censorship In Missouri Secondary Schools, Janie Hutchinson Walker

Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine by a general survey the extent of censorship in Missouri secondary schools. This survey was intended to obtain information regarding districts selection policies, policies pertaining to censorship procedures, actual incidence of censorship cases, titles found objectionable, and reasons for objections. It was also intended to elicit individual librarians' opinions regarding censorship cases in their school district and on contributing to a statewide newsletter on issues pertinent to censorship.

In this study, surveys were sent to a random sampling of 106 of the 546 school districts listed in the 1983-84 Missouri School Directory. …

Emerging Legal Theories Of Educational Malpractice And Judicial Rejection, Tanya Ruth Von Gustedt Jan 1985

Emerging Legal Theories Of Educational Malpractice And Judicial Rejection, Tanya Ruth Von Gustedt

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This is a study of the current legal theories, elements, and courts’ stances affecting educational malpractice litigation. General and legal issues were researched as a basis to identify court attitudes and general public pressures. The study also took a look at the question of possible avenues for dealing with problems of educational malpractice. Should the courts decide why Johnny can’t read and award monetary damages? Should the legislature deal with the problem of faulty education, or should a totally different agency become involved in such an undertaking?

Related fields, such as medical malpractice, torts, contract theory, and responsiblities and obligations …
