The future mission of the Air Force will be diverse and complex. Advanced technology will play an increasingly prominent role; a smaller force must accomplish more. To support this mission, our acquisition corps must be intellectually capable, well educated and trained. Focused graduate education will be essential to sustain this effort.

Multiparty Politics In America (First Edition), Paul S. Herrnson, John C. Green
Multiparty Politics in America First Edition
In the wake of Ross Perot, Ralph Nader, and other "third" party and independent candidates that ran in the 1996 election, this collection of original essays by leading political scientists and third party officials is must reading for individuals interested in American politics. Multiparty Politics in America examines the roles that third parties have played in U.S. elections past and present and their prospects for the future. It presents unique and detailed coverage of the Reform, Green, and Libertarian parties' goals and campaign strategies; discusses the kinds of reforms that would help them become more viable; and advances the debate …

An Information Security Education Initiative For Engineering And Computer Science, Shiu-Kai Chin, Cynthia E. Irvine, Deborah Frincke
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
This paper puts forward a case for an educational initiative in information security at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Its focus is on the need for such education, the desired educational outcomes, and how the outcomes may be assessed. A basic thesis of this paper is that the goals, methods, and evaluation techniques of information and computer security are consistent with and supportive of the stated goals of engineering education and the growing movement for outcomes-based assessment in higher education.

Alternative Conceptions Of A Structure For Interconnectedness, Carmen Montecinos
Alternative Conceptions Of A Structure For Interconnectedness, Carmen Montecinos
Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series
Before we can help others "understand our interconnectedness," we ourselves must be aware of the social, political, and economic structure of the network(s) we seek to build. Following a framework developed by Riane Eisler and David Loye (1990), two contrasting understandings of the "world order" entailed in the construction of global interconnectedness will be outlined. The first approach involves a hierarchical structure, and the second approach involves an egalitarian partnership. These two models involve radically different assumptions, social practices, and consequences.
People who understand global interconnectedness from these approaches mean something quite different when they say "One is the only …
Art, Education, And The Bomb: Reflections On An International Children’S Peace Mural Project, Tom Anderson
Art, Education, And The Bomb: Reflections On An International Children’S Peace Mural Project, Tom Anderson
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
As a community muralist (T. Anderson, 1985) and contextualist I believe that the purpose of art is communication from one human being to another about things that count (R. Anderson, 1990; Dissanayake, 1988; Lippard, 1990). This does not mean that we disregard the aesthetic component—the “wonder”—in an artwork. Rather, it implies that the aesthetic serves an extrinsic function beyond its supposed raison d’être. That function, which is usually both prosaic and symbolic, is to serve as a marker that in some way defines the people who make, use, and view artworks or aesthetically framed objects (R. Anderson, 1990). Art is …

Helping People Develop A Global Perspective, Leander Brown
Helping People Develop A Global Perspective, Leander Brown
Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series
In the 1996 Fall issue of the linker, a publication from the Grant Wood Area Education Agency in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Robert Anthony suggested that if we circle all of the articles in our daily newspaper dealing with the world at large we might be surprised by the number of circles covering our paper. He also suggested that if we noted the number of minutes devoted to international news on our favorite nightly network news program, we might again be surprised. Anthony asserted that it is clear that we will be affected by global events throughout our lives and that …

Higher Education In Rural America : A Study Of Northern Plains American Indian And Non-Indian Attitudes, Aspirations, Expectations, And Perceived Barriers, Marta Albertus Brosz Mohr
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study addresses the need for educational research specific to rural populations of American Indians and their non-Indian neighbors. In order to provide answers to both theoretical and practical questions, a survey was conducted with a random sample of rural residents living within a twenty-five mile radius of a rural, tribal institution of higher education. The structured interviews gathered data regarding attitudes, aspirations, expectations, and perceived barriers. Analyses of the data indicate that this population has strong, positive attitudes toward higher education and aspires to a college education in spite of real and perceived barriers. This study does not support …
