Adapt And Serve The Community!: Voices Of Families Of Youth Of Color In Predominantly White, Rural Communities, Carie Ruggiano
The Rural Educator
Currently, there is limited research that centers the voices of youth of Color and their families living and attending school in rural communities in the United States. This lack of representation is even more prominent among rural youth who identify in culturally, racially, and linguistically diverse ways and who reside and attend schools in predominantly white contexts. This qualitative case study sought to explore the experiences of parents of children who identify as youth of Color and who reside or attend school in predominantly white, rural settings. Drawing from in-depth interviews with five parents from four families, findings reveal that …

“Does It Identify Me?”: The Multiple Identities Of College Students From Rural Areas, Elise J. Cain, Jenay F. E. Willis
The Rural Educator
The understanding of identities is an important component to understanding students and their experiences in educational contexts, especially in postsecondary education. There is limited information about the identities of college students from rural areas because this student population is often neglected as a distinct group in higher education literature. This article details a study utilizing narrative inquiry to explore the identities of three college students who graduated from high schools in rural areas. The findings suggest that these students’ races and ethnicities, genders and biological sexes, and sexual orientations were their salient social identities. Rurality was not a prominent identity, …

A Mixed-Methods Exploration Study On Trauma-Informed Practices Used To Dismantle The School-To-Prison Pipeline In Public And Private Schools In The City Of St. Louis, Jennifer Lauren Gabrian
Dissertations
Since the release of the Missouri Model for Trauma-Informed Schools approved by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) in 2019, school leaders were given the opportunity to start the process of meeting the emotional and fundamental needs of students. With the effects of trauma reaching all diverse groups of race, gender, economic status, and community surroundings, there is an increased need to use the education system to reach students emotionally. Though the model is a blueprint for schools, school districts are not required to adopt this model and implement it within their districts. Due to the recent pandemic, …

Autophagy, But Not Proteolysis, May Aid In Muscle Protein Synthesis, Megan H. Lewis, Patrick J. Ryan, Sean T. Stanelle, Colleen L. O'Reilly, Jessica M. Cardin, James D. Fluckey
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
For muscle growth to occur, protein synthesis must be greater than protein degradation. However, up to this point, anabolic pathways have garnered the brunt of investigations examining anabolic capacity with little investigation into the connectedness of catabolic signaling on these anabolic targets. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to elucidate the contributions of proteasomal-dependent and autophagic-dependent catabolic pathways on anabolism via analysis of fractional synthetic rates (FSR) in L6 myotubes. METHODS: Differentiated, cultured L6 myoblasts were treated with media containing 4% deuterium oxide (stable isotope label) and a corresponding pharmacological treatment (NSC 185058 [autophagic inhibitor; 100 μM], …

Communication Fatigue Among Egyptian School Teachers, Nahla El Gendy
Communication Fatigue Among Egyptian School Teachers, Nahla El Gendy
Theses and Dissertations
Communication fatigue is a situation when a person is no longer able to engage in communication. This study, which is one of the very first in the field, determines the antecedents and consequences of communication fatigue among Egyptian school teachers to be used as a guide for decision makers in the educational sector. Communication between teachers and students is fundamental in the learning process and understanding the antecedents and consequences of communication fatigue is meant to improve the communication between teachers and students and positively reflect on the learning process.
This study answers three main research questions: What is communication …
What Are We Trying To Do Here? Epistemic Racism In Human Rights Teaching, Angelina Snodgrass Godoy
What Are We Trying To Do Here? Epistemic Racism In Human Rights Teaching, Angelina Snodgrass Godoy
International Journal of Human Rights Education
Across the disciplines, universities increasingly incorporate course offerings focusing on human rights in which students examine problems that disproportionately affect communities of color. Instructors often assume our teaching about these issues contributes to the cause of social justice by spotlighting the problems themselves, but this research challenges that assumption. Based on interviews with students of color enrolled in social justice courses at a U.S. public R1 university, this article explores the ways students described their experiences as a form of epistemological racism rooted in the privileging of academic perspectives, themselves laden with legacies of exclusion, over ways of knowing rooted …

Three Boys, Three Murders: Children’S Rights, State Violence And The Open Wound Of The U.S.-Mexico Border, Genevieve M. Negrón-Gonzales
International Journal of Human Rights Education
This article examines the killing of three teenage boys at the U.S.-Mexico border between 2010 and 2013. Through an examination of these murders at the hands of U.S. Border Patrol and Customs and Border Enforcement agents, the article argues that the murders of Sergio Adrían Hernández Guereca, José Antonio Elena Rodríguez and Cruz Marcelino Velasquez Acevedo at the U.S.-Mexico border exemplify the reality that not all children are afforded the so-called universal protection of childhood as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and other international human rights law. We can see how the state …
The Crucial Role Of Sestrins In Oxidative Stress Response And Disease: An Analysis Of Phosphorylation Mutation S110a In Hsesn2, Julianne Fay
The Crucial Role Of Sestrins In Oxidative Stress Response And Disease: An Analysis Of Phosphorylation Mutation S110a In Hsesn2, Julianne Fay
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Sestrins are highly conserved proteins which are induced under environmentally stressful conditions to adjust the cell’s response to such disturbances. This protein possesses two domains critical for its dual function in reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and regulating the mTORC1 complex. Sestrins may use diverse transcription factors, such as Nrf2, peroxiredoxin reductase activity, and a catalytic cysteine to regenerate oxidized species; however this was confirmed to be through a mechanism likely different than AhpD, for which there was distance sequence similarity. Furthermore, Sestrins are important regulators of TORC1 and AMPK, which are crucial energy sensors able to control cellular metabolism …
Baphia Macrocalyx Leaf Extract Attenuates Rotenone-Induced Toxicity In Drosophila Melanogaster Model Of Parkinson’S Disease
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a motor disorder mostly affecting aged people, with not known standard therapy. The use of natural products is increasingly gaining attention for the treatment of different diseases. Baphia macrocalyx is a plant previously associated with antioxidant activities in in vitro studies. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the ameliorative potential of methanolic leaf extract of Baphia macrocalyx (MEBM) on rotenone-triggered toxicity in Drosophila melanogaster. To this end, the study used a neurotoxin, rotenone, to induce PD in the fruit-fly to create a chemical PD in vivo model. Using biochemical, behavioural and molecular analyses, …

Exploring Student Perceptions Of Behavioral, Cognitive, And Emotional Engagement At The Activity Level In General Chemistry, Nicole Naibert, Elizabeth Vaughan, Kylee M. Brevick, Jack Barbera
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
Although active learning strategies are being incorporated into many higher-education STEM courses, not all students benefit from these activities to the same extent. As these types of activities are designed to engage students in their learning, differences in student engagement may explain some of the differences in learning outcomes. However, before student engagement in active learning activities can be meaningfully measured using a self-report survey, it is important to evaluate if students perceive engagement similarly to the literature definitions on which these measures are based. Therefore, this study sought to explore students’ perceptions of the behavioral, cognitive, and emotional dimensions …
Development And Evaluation Of A Survey To Measure Student Engagement At The Activity Level In General Chemistry, Nicole Naibert, Jack Barbera
Development And Evaluation Of A Survey To Measure Student Engagement At The Activity Level In General Chemistry, Nicole Naibert, Jack Barbera
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
Student engagement is an important consideration when incorporating active learning activities into a classroom. To facilitate the large-scale assessment of students’ engagement in activities, a survey measure must first be developed and evaluated. Therefore, the goal of this study was to create a self-report measure of student engagement for use with active learning activities in general chemistry classes. The Activity Engagement Survey (AcES) was modified from an existing survey of engagement of middle and high school science students that contained behavioral, cognitive, emotional, and social engagement items. Multiple rounds of response process interviews and factor analyses were used to modify …

A Phenomenological Study Of The Impact Of Covid-19 On Colleges And Universities In The United States, Erin D. Lynn
A Phenomenological Study Of The Impact Of Covid-19 On Colleges And Universities In The United States, Erin D. Lynn
Student Theses and Dissertations
2019-nCoV (COVID-19) is a novel coronavirus first identified in the Wuhan, Hubei Province, that developed into a global pandemic in the year 2020. The impact in early spring compromised many higher education institutions, forcing some to shift to remote operations and leaving schools to determine when, how, and to what capacity they could safely reopen while also making contingency plans for ongoing or future periods of disruption. As is often the case with disasters and public health crises, not all who are affected are impacted uniformly, and the disproportionate ways in which people and communities are affected influence resiliency and …
A Rationale For Integrating Writing Into Secondary Content Area Classrooms: Perspectives From Teachers Who Experience The Benefits Of Integrating Writing Frequently, Hannah Carter, Dianna Townsend
A Rationale For Integrating Writing Into Secondary Content Area Classrooms: Perspectives From Teachers Who Experience The Benefits Of Integrating Writing Frequently, Hannah Carter, Dianna Townsend
Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations
Teachers navigate ongoing accountability pressures that target writing in each content area, yet little is understood about their experiences with or their rationales for integrating writing into content area lessons. While previous research describes writing in U.S. secondary classrooms and explains barriers to writing integration, this study investigates teacher decision making to determine why teachers in various content areas are integrating writing. Using a multicase study design, we explored teacher reflections to discern the reasons why teachers chose to integrate writing frequently. Four teachers, one from each primary content area (mathematics, English language arts, science, social studies), reflected on their …
