A Mixed Methods Case Study: Effects Of Instructors’ Beliefs On Incorporation Of Sustainability Curriculum At A Midwestern University, Anna Oetting
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The degree to which sustainability is taught is often varied and inconsistent across colleges, departments, and higher education institutions. However, educating students and future generations regarding the different pillars of sustainability, including economic, social, and environmental topics, is increasing in importance and urgency. A mixed methods case study utilized surveys and interviews to investigate why instructors incorporate sustainability, what impacts course incorporation of sustainability, and barriers that instructors face. This study found that instructors’ beliefs regarding the importance of sustainability relate to the extent to which sustainability is incorporated into their curriculum. Topics of sustainability incorporated into a class are …
Sex Differences In Lateral Hypothalamic Extracellular Glucose Concentrations During Cumulative Dosing Of Methamphetamine In Rats, Joshua A. Jolton
Sex Differences In Lateral Hypothalamic Extracellular Glucose Concentrations During Cumulative Dosing Of Methamphetamine In Rats, Joshua A. Jolton
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The present study experimentally investigated sex differences in lateral hypothalamic glucose concentrations following cumulative dosing of methamphetamine. Male (n=17) and female (n=11) rats were surgically implanted with enzyme-based glucose biosensors in the lateral hypothalamus. Rats then received a saline injection followed by four methamphetamine doses (0.025 mg/kg, 0.05 mg/kg, 0.1 mg/kg, and 0.2 mg/kg) spaced 55 minutes apart. We found that while there was a general decrease in glucose baseline throughout the study for both sexes, the magnitude of the decrease was significantly greater in females compared to males. On a rapid timescale, fixed sex effects existed at the lower …
Identification And Characterization Of An Ftsq-Null Suppressor Gene In Streptomyces, Alexandra Sherman
Identification And Characterization Of An Ftsq-Null Suppressor Gene In Streptomyces, Alexandra Sherman
Undergraduate Distinction Papers
Streptomyces coelicolor is a filamentous Gram-positive soil bacterium that grows similarly to fungi. The bacteria grow together in a mycelium-like structure that produces aerial hyphae above the media surface for sporulation. Evenly spaced crosswalls develop during cell division of the aerial filaments with the aid of division genes, including ftsZ and ftsQ. These cell division genes are essential for growth in the common bacterium and if silenced will cause the bacterium to die. Streptomyces uniquely retains the ability for growth after a deletion of either the ftsZ or ftsQ gene which causes a loss of septum formation in the …
Characterization Of A Medium-Dependent Streptomyces Developmental Mutant, Dylan Gray, Jennifer A. Bennett
Characterization Of A Medium-Dependent Streptomyces Developmental Mutant, Dylan Gray, Jennifer A. Bennett
Undergraduate Distinction Papers
Streptomyces coelicolor is a soil-dwelling, Gram-positive Actinobacteria. Streptomyces species produce thousands of secondary metabolites which include many antibiotics used in medicine today. In Streptomyces development, as colonies grow, secondary metabolites are produced, and ultimately mature spores are dispersed. The production of each of these secondary metabolites in wild-type Streptomyces is determined by a distinct biosynthetic pathway. In order to identify new genes for antibiotic production and other aspects of development, an engineered Tn5-derived transposon was used to mutagenize wild-type cells in vivo and produce single, stable insertions.
Colonies that were visually distinct from the wild type were selected for further …

Best Practices To Improve English Language Acquisition For High School El Students Who Have Experienced Trauma, Hannah Sundermeyer
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
English Learner students are a rapidly growing subset of the U.S. student population with unique strengths and needs compared to their monolingual peers. My experiences as an EL teacher with secondary EL students who have experienced trauma led to my capstone question: what best practices can be used for high school EL students who have been impacted by trauma to build their English language acquisition? While there is a plethora of research on EL students and on trauma, there is little research connecting the two topics. However, research demonstrates a number of proven strategies to help EL students and students …

How can they safely explore and develop their identity? The project is a curriculum guide that helps support adolescent identity development, the curriculum is geared for high school …
Incorporating Interactive Outdoor Learning Into Everyday Curricula, Haley Doty
Incorporating Interactive Outdoor Learning Into Everyday Curricula, Haley Doty
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
As the state of our environment continues to worsen, it is important now more than ever that students become environmentally literate. Defined as an individual’s knowledge, attitude towards, and engagement with the environment, environmental literacy works to decrease environmental issues (Artun & Özsevgec, 2018). Although high school environmental science courses act as an introduction to environmental issues, they often lack experiences within the environment itself. Seeking to answer the research question: how can educational materials be used to integrate interactive, outdoor experiences into everyday classroom curricula, a unit of curriculum was developed for high school students enrolled in environmental science. …

Death Education In Environmental Education: Making Meaning From Children's Eco-Grief, Gabrielle Loisel
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Eco-grief, the feeling of sadness, loss, or bereavement caused by environmental degradation and destruction, is an increasingly widespread phenomenon as ecological issues such as climate change are widely acknowledged. Children, with their limited agency, are vulnerable to feelings of helplessness and may develop maladaptive coping mechanisms, while educators often struggle to discuss environmental topics that prompt negative emotions. Drawing on best practices from the field of death education, this project examines ways of making meaning and outlines a new set of best practices for environmental educators to assuage students' eco-grief as well as their own, answering the question of: How …

Resisting The Western Scientist Inside And Outside Of The Collegiate Biology Classroom, Dulce G. Ventura , '22
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
In this thesis, I explore how conceptions of western science and scientists invade the Swarthmore Biology department and how it impacts BIPOC students inside and outside the classroom. The findings indicate that BIPOC students are routinely harmed by many ideas conceived from colonialism. However, both students and faculty demonstrate resistance inside and outside the classroom. Inside the classroom, faculty members build strong relationships with students in small communities and negate Western science's claim of objectivity. Outside of the classroom, programs like the Biology Big Sibling-Little Sibling program are recentering BIPOC students and their lived experiences, effectively creating a community where …

Fostering Students’ Sense Of Belonging And Inclusion Through Community Involvement, Rebecca Batchelder
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
This paper examines resource availability and allocation within schools and, through its investigation, identifies the greater community system as an underutilized source of talent. To better understand and use the greater community as a resource, this paper will consider the impact on students’ social-emotional growth. More specifically, how does community involvement in the classroom, specifically through the use of community-based learning practices, impact a student’s sense of belonging and inclusion? Community-based learning practices are rooted in authentic learning experiences where students collaborate with community partners to address community needs and objectives. Students, educators, and members of the greater community all …

The guiding question for my capstone project was: how can inquiry-based astronomy curriculum that is culturally sustaining and differentiated be effectively adapted to the online setting with student equity as a prime consideration? The curriculum designed for this project focuses on integrating CAST’s Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework into online lessons. Lessons also increase engagement by incorporating inquiry and culturally sustaining content. The curriculum is intended to be used in the online setting as a high school astronomy elective, but lessons could also be used in regular classrooms or environmental learning centers. A key takeaway of the project is …
Increasing Ocean Environment Awareness In Land-Locked Middle School Students, Krista Espelien
Increasing Ocean Environment Awareness In Land-Locked Middle School Students, Krista Espelien
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Abstract The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has defined ocean literacy as an “understanding of the ocean’s influence on you — and your influence on the ocean” (NOAA, 2013). Students are future decision-makers and engaging them in ocean literacy is vital as they will continue to be confronted with climate change throughout their lives. This capstone project addresses the question: How can experiential education on the topic of coral reef restoration increase the investment of land-locked, middle school students in marine conservation? This document identifies how ocean literacy and marine science topics are poorly represented in school curricula despite …

"Contextualizing The 'Theses On Socialist Education:' Lessons For Revolutionary Pedagogy Today" In Socialist Education In Korea: Selected Works Of Kim Il-Sung, Derek R. Ford, Curry Malott
Education Studies Faculty publications
From Publisher: Publishing the selected works of Kim Il-Sung on education is a controversial move in the United States. In fact, there’s almost a proportional relationship between the demonization of the DPRK and the level of ignorance one has about the state, the country, its government, its people and society, and its history. This is particularly striking given the recent interest in decolonial and anti-colonial education, in socialist and communist educational methods, and in socialism and communism more generally. Given these recent activist and scholarly interests, Riley Park and Cambria York’s new collection, Socialist Education in Korea, is a welcome …
