Cultivating Student Agency Through The Use Of Authentic Science Practices, John Haug
Cultivating Student Agency Through The Use Of Authentic Science Practices, John Haug
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
This paper examines a needed shift in teaching secondary science students as more states and school districts adopt the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for assessing student skills and knowledge. The eight practices identified by the NGSS offer an opportunity to incorporate authentic science instruction into the classroom. Research supports that students who gain confidence in authentic science practices have a broader and deeper understanding of the nature of science. Research also supports that students who improve authentic practices are more likely to trust scientific findings and be more apt to take action on social and environmental issues. This shift …

Exploring concepts from environmental education and art education, this capstone project uses the sense of wonder (Carson, 1956), the live creature (Dewey, 1934) and aesthetic empathy (Haskell, 2018) as a framework for study. This professional development workshop for environmental educators is designed to introduce environmental art education …
How Can Informal Environmental Education Curriculum And Pedagogy Be More Inclusive For Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd) Students?, Claire Dobie
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
It is becoming common for teachers of all subjects to gain training or take courses that specifically help them integrate environmental education (EE) into their core subject (Dada et al., 2018). At times, formal educators will team up with informal environmental educators to offer such opportunities. Informal educators, while well-versed in environmental activities, topics and issues, may not have an understanding of how to teach. This means that those who do not learn well in a traditional classroom may struggle to take part in EE. Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are an example of individuals that learn in a …

Understanding these barriers to access is critical to fostering more inclusive learning for all students. Using a framework from previous work in online learning, we examined student perceptions of online FA access with respect to five barrier categories: technical resources, instructor organization, social interactions, personal engagement, and learning environment. We developed and administered a survey to over 1200 undergraduate biology …
Using Learning Progressions To Enhance Student Outcomes And Performance, Andrea Werner
Using Learning Progressions To Enhance Student Outcomes And Performance, Andrea Werner
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Learning discrepancies are difficult for students to recover from. In earlier years, rote memorization, drill-and-practice, and whole-group instruction have proven little success. Students continually lack proficiency and have minimal gain year after year. More recently, small groups and interventions have made improvements on student proficiency, but they still struggle to increase overall student achievement. Research suggests learning progressions as a dynamic, individualized approach to increase not only academic achievement, but also depth of knowledge and student efficacy. Learning progressions allow for flexibility in levels of learning, the content taught, and how a student grasps information. Then learning progressions promote rigorous …
