School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Hybrid conferences are in-person events that have an online component. This type of meeting format was rare before the COVID-19 pandemic, but started to become more common recently given the asynchronous global progression of the pandemic, the uneven access to vaccines and different travel regulations among countries that led to a large proportion of participants being unable to attend conferences in person. Here we report the organization of a middle-sized (581 participants: 159 onsite, 422 online) international hybrid conference that took place in France in September 2021. We highlight particular organizational challenges inherent to this relatively new type of meeting …

Speech And Language Developmental Delays And Early Intervention Programs, Deidre Douglas-Washington Jul 2022

Speech And Language Developmental Delays And Early Intervention Programs, Deidre Douglas-Washington

LC Journal of Special Education

The purpose of this paper is to provide information about speech and language acquisition as it applies to children with developmental delays. Local education agencies, early interventionists, such as speech-language pathologists, and parents must provide literacy rich environments for pre-school aged children. The concerted effort among these individuals to provide speech and language services and activities for children in natural environments will be necessary to identify children who may need additional special education services and decrease the number of children being identified with a developmental disability. A review of the literature about early speech and language acquisition and intervention is …

Decreasing Self-Injurious Behaviors In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Susan L. Mccorkle

LC Journal of Special Education

There has been increased concern in developing successful interventions for problem behaviors in ASD due to a rise in diagnoses of this disorder (Doughty & Doughty, 2008). This paper will explore applied behavior analysis research studies that have examined interventions used in the attempt to decrease or extinguish SIB in children with ASD. Procedural alternatives for behavioral reduction will be investigated and the results of research will be evaluated for significant influence on SIB. These include reinforcement-based strategies, extinction strategies, removal of desirable stimuli, and the presentation of aversive stimuli. The functional relationship between SIB and these alternatives for behavior …

Academic Interventions For Students With Asd, Deanna B. Cash Jul 2022

Academic Interventions For Students With Asd, Deanna B. Cash

LC Journal of Special Education

Following the reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act in 2004 and its emphasis on inclusion of students with disabilities in the general education setting, students with Autism Spectrum Disorder are increasingly taught in general education classrooms (Leblanc, Richardson, & Burns, 2009; Simpson, Boer-Ott, & Smith-Myles, 2003). Data from the Annual Report to Congress on Implementation of IDEA (U.S. Department of Education, 2010) indicated that almost 90% of students with autism in public schools in the United States receive their education in general education classrooms for some part of the school day. Yet, both general education and special …

Michigan Reading Journal

This article describes how literature, particularly crossover picturebooks, can be used to provide teachers and their students with a helpful perspective on the complex nature of problems, especially human problems with physical and mental health. We begin with an example of a picturebook that provides a unique perspective on the value of problems; namely, problems as unexpected gifts that can promote understanding, the first step in wellness. Next, we introduce crossover literature as an innovative genre for better understanding complex and controversial problems. Then, we share specific examples of crossover picturebooks, along with research-based instructional strategies, that teachers can use …

Students with disabilities are attending higher education institutes at an increasing rate due to the programs and retention practices developed in k-12 classrooms. A concern for community colleges is the student’s ability to transition into the workforce after graduation. A high percentage of students with disabilities are unemployed. It is essential to study factors that can contribute to a student’s ability or inability to successfully transition into employment after matriculation. Self-efficacy has been associated with academic success and could be a determinate for employment status. The purpose of this study was to determine if self-efficacy levels differ between students with …

Recording The Skills Of Interpreting The Past: A Case Study On Historical Thinking Skills Developed Through Student-Generated Video, Jerrod Alexander Boggs

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this descriptive, instrumental case study was to understand the development of historical skills through the use of the student-generated videos for graduate students in the history classroom. The theories guiding this study were cognitive constructivism (Bruner, 1977; Dewey, 1910) and activity theory (Engeström, 1987; 2001) as they pertain to student-generated videos in the history classroom. Bruner’s (1977; 2006) theories of cognitive constructivism provide a framework for how students learn through repeated exposure and development of mental models. Engeström’s (1987) activity theory addresses issues of the process of students making a video and how it relates to the …

Emotional Intelligence In Second Year Nursing Students: Measuring The Impact Of A Single Intervention, Tonya Anthony Jul 2022

Emotional Intelligence In Second Year Nursing Students: Measuring The Impact Of A Single Intervention, Tonya Anthony

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

ABSTRACT

Traditional second-year nursing students are often unprepared to manage their emotions, during clinical experiences, in volatile acute care settings. EI is emerging in the literature as an essential ability to foster effective interpersonal and interprofessional communication within the stressful confines of patient care settings. Furthermore, research shows that universities need to invest in the emotional development of students during the first few years of college to facilitate healthy psychosocial identities.

This study aimed to determine the impact of a single EI intervention on second-year students in a baccalaureate nursing program. Quantitative methods were utilized to measure statistical significance in …

Emotional Or Behavioral Disorders, E. Rene James Jul 2022

Emotional Or Behavioral Disorders, E. Rene James

LC Journal of Special Education

If surveyed across several generations, casual inquirers would not be hard-pressed to discover differing attitudes about current behavior challenges in schools today. While many structures have been established and documents written, one cannot deny the changes in focus that are now required to accommodate new attitudes and behaviors in many children in our public education system. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act maintains a formal definition of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (EBD) which led to this disorder being included in the list of IEP-warranted classifications. Children who exhibit symptoms within the listed criteria often are identified as demonstrating predominately externalizing …

The Process Of Establishing A Blooming Chemistry Tool For Use In Undergraduate Chemistry Education And Research, Emryse Geye Jul 2022

The Process Of Establishing A Blooming Chemistry Tool For Use In Undergraduate Chemistry Education And Research, Emryse Geye

Dissertations and Theses

While it is still common in college chemistry to assess student learning and skill with summative assessments, the CER community does not currently have a simple tool to determine and communicate whether an assessment is actually aligned with the outcomes of interest. In particular, as so-called evidence-based teaching practices and active learning strategies gain a foothold in college chemistry classrooms, the ability to communicate whether those (often labor-, cost-, and time-intensive) interventions are not only aligned with course outcomes, but also provide measurable benefit to students becomes more imperative. While college chemistry has made some strides in the area of …
