Rainwater harvesting (RWH) was primarily considered as a source for fresh water supply or a conservation practice for overcoming water shortages in drought prone areas. By retaining storm-water run-off for onsite use, harvesting systems reduce the runoff volumes and pollutant masses entering waterways. Some of the most interesting aspects of RWH are the methods of capture, storage, and the use of this natural resource at the place it occurs.

The Geology Program has formal book, fossil, journal, map, mineral, and rock collections dating to the 1950’s. These specimens were donated by biological and physical sciences faculty prior to the 1960 hire of Dr. John Philley and greatly expanded upon by Drs. Philley, James Chaplin, Jules DuBar, and H.W. Straley III through the 1990’s. Prior to construction of the “C-wing” of Lappin Hall, the collections previously housed in laboratory classrooms in the path of the new corridor connecting the “B-wing” and “C-wing”, as well as those housed in the “A-wing” were boxed and stored in multiple temporary locations until new …

Beer, the product of fermentation that arguably changed the course of human civilization. Though the first brewing process dates back to ancient Mesopotamia, the modern method still presents a host of flaws. There are both many steps of fermentation and many opportunities for contamination. Most breweries will experience some form of spoilage in their lifetime. These invading microorganisms can alter turbidity, coloration, aroma, taste, and the overall quality of the product. This disruption is devastating for commerce. A centralized method of testing would help to eliminate spoiled products and prevent future infections. The following procedure utilizes a combination of polymerase …

Health And Wealth: Hidden Disparities In Eastern Kentucky, Macaila Blankenship, Geoff Gearner
2023 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
Eastern Kentucky lags behind the rest of the state regarding proper health, while Kentucky as a whole is doing worse than national averages. Kentucky not only leads the United States in cancer mortality, but sees higher mortality from heart disease, injury, suicide, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The health crisis being observed can largely be attributed to high poverty rates throughout the Eastern half of the state. Considering the not-so-broad socioeconomic scale seen throughout much of Kentucky, it is more evident that health has a direct correlation to one’s wealth and resources. Along with being financially secure, those who …

2023 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
Building onto a recent serious of ab initio studies of various acid-gas reactions with metal oxide sorbents, electronic structure methods are being used to study the addition of CS₂ to Group IV (MO₂)ₙ and Group VI (MO₃)ₙ (n = 1, 2, 3) nanoclusters, beginning with the MO₂ and MO₃ monomers according to a “bottom-up” approach. The preliminary density functional theory (DFT) calculations in this study provide structures and vibrational frequency thermodynamic corrections for later expanding upon by way of single point correlated molecular-orbital theory (MO) calculations, mainly CCSD(T) and MP2 to study the structures and energies which could arise from …
Impact Of Audiobooks On Reading Attitudes Of Upper Elementary Students, Jessica Grace Dewit
Impact Of Audiobooks On Reading Attitudes Of Upper Elementary Students, Jessica Grace Dewit
Master of Education Program Theses
There is a documented complex relationship between reading attitudes, reading volume, and reading comprehension skills. Stanovich (1986) documented the impact of positive attitudes towards reading on reading volume, and Allington (2014) described how reading volume impacts reading comprehension skills. This mixed methods action research study builds on these studies and explores the use of audiobooks during free reading time to examine their impact on reading attitudes. Twenty-three students in a grade 5/6 class in Alberta, Canada, listened to audiobooks during free reading time for 20 minutes, three times a week, for six weeks. Results indicate no significant change in attitudes …

Repressor Of The Sos Response Mechanism In Acinetobacter Baumannii Requires Helix-Formation And Dimerization For Its Dna-Binding Ability, Belinda Candra, Deborah Cook, Jenelle Hare
2023 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
After DNA damage, the multi-drug resistant pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii activates its SOS response, possibly allowing mutagenesis to occur by inducing multiple errorprone polymerases. A. baumannii uses the non-canonical repressor protein UmuDAb to repress operons of these polymerases. It has an N-terminal domain (NTD) with 2 helices (HTH1 & HTH2) whose sequences are needed for repression1. Like other bacterial SOS repressors such as LexA, UmuDAb dimerizes. BACTH analyses2 showed that UmuDAb forms dimers via its LexA-like G124 residue and UmuD-like N100 residue (UmuD is a component of an error-prone polymerase). However, N100 is not needed if the C termini are free. …

The Strategic Application Of Alternative Grading To Improve Retention And Enhance Equity (Spring 2023), Teshome Abebe, Michael Gillespie
EIU Think Tank Reports and White Papers
Universities across the United States have been using the Pass/Fail grading system for a variety of reasons and in many different ways. There are so many uses of the system as there are universities.
In general, universities have used the Pass/Fail grading system to: help reduce stress and pressure on students; provide more flexibility in course selection and encourage students to explore and pursue interest without fear of damaging their GPA; reduce perceived discrimination and bias in grading, providing more equitable opportunities for all students regardless of race, socioeconomic status or prior academic background; and to improve retention rates by …

The National School Lunch Program: Policy Strategies To Address Food Insecurity In School-Aged Children, Keaghan Curley
Community Engagement Student Work
The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is available to American families with lower annual incomes in relation to the poverty level in order to provide nutritional meals for their school-aged children. However, conveying this offered program to American families comes with challenges, such as food insecurity and the lack of resources along with education in relation to overall health and well-being. Follow-up recommendations are included to possibly assist and approve this federally funded program
Using Online Video Observations And Real Time, Peer Reflective Analysis Of Culturally Responsive Teaching Pedagogy In A University Teacher Preparatory Program For Preservice Teachers, Adrian E. Cortes
Doctor of Education (EdD)
This research aimed to understand the impacts of using online video observations and real-time peer reflection to teach and address culturally responsive teaching in a Pacific Northwest university’s teacher preparatory program. Six active university students enrolled in a university’s new teacher preparatory program (i.e., preservice, new teacher candidates) actively participated in all areas of this study (i.e., nonrandom sampling) and provided both quantitative and qualitative data. Study participants completed self-evaluative pre- and post-surveys in a research group session. Surveys were built using the ready 4 rigor framework (Hammond & Jackson, 2015) and the four areas of culturally responsive teaching as …
The Self And Individualism: An Analysis On The Current Regulations Of Academic Writing, Bonnibel S. H. Walker
The Self And Individualism: An Analysis On The Current Regulations Of Academic Writing, Bonnibel S. H. Walker
WRIT: Journal of First-Year Writing
Individualism, the focus or emphasis on the self, is a highly discussed and debated topic in writing. This is mostly regarding how the self should be addressed and utilized in writing. Although it there is also debate about what the self truly is, and how one can represent it in their work, veering into more abstract thought and theorizing.
The amount of individualism, or the “self” that one is able to, or should imprint onto one’s writing varies widely across numerous genres of academic writing, or even writing in general. For example, in much of scientific writing there’s a broad …

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) codes for proteins using a unique order of four major nitrogenous bases adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine. In several biological applications, such as the determination of DNA stability, production of biologic based drugs, and even taxonomic reorganization of species, it becomes necessary to understand the relative amounts of each nucleotide in a DNA sample, regardless of their sequence. However, most assays used to determine base composition use expensive equipment, harsh chemicals, and advanced computer software. In addition, the determination of base composition is an important educational tool in undergraduate laboratories, but these limitations are infeasible for many …
