Investigative Methods For The Science Teacher, Bernard D. Hermanson Jan 1971

Investigative Methods For The Science Teacher, Bernard D. Hermanson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The basis for this research project was the idea: Why tell or lecture students about an idea or fact when, if given the appropriate information, they would be able to figure it out for themselves? This does not mean that we hand the students a text and tell them to learn about the subject on their own, nor is this "investigative" approach to be used all the time. Because of the different levels of reasoning needed for various topics, one cannot expect a student to deduce the composition of an atom as easily as he can deduce the composition of …

Paramecia Affected By Leaf Extracts, M. Bley, B. Frenchick, K. Smith Jan 1971

Paramecia Affected By Leaf Extracts, M. Bley, B. Frenchick, K. Smith

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Leaves and needles from deciduous and coniferous trees play a major role in the formation of soil in their respective forests and thus help to determine the type of life that can successfully live there. Because of the known effects of leaf and needle litter on larger invertebrate life, earthworms, millipedes, etc., it was decided to experiment with infusions of paramecia derived from both leaves and needles to see if they were similarly affected.

A History Of Eastern Michigan University: 1849-1965, Egbert R. Isbell Jan 1971

A History Of Eastern Michigan University: 1849-1965, Egbert R. Isbell

University Archives Book Collection

Although the history of a university is not easily captured, it is valuable to us as a measure of our successes and failures, a chronicle and evaluation of what has gone before. This history is of special interest and inspiration as it traces the story of one of the most significant chapters in the development of higher education in the United States.

Professor Isbell unfolds an inspiring story. Thousands of graduates of Eastern Michigan University have carried into schools and colleges over the entire country the idea of their University. They have influenced the minds of legions of young people …

Scholarship And Ideology, Bhikhu Parekh Jan 1971

Scholarship And Ideology, Bhikhu Parekh

Perspectives (1969-1979)

One of the most distinctive characteristics of the modern university is the tremendous emphasis placed on research, on "expanding the frontiers of knowledge." The faculty has argued, and the university authorities have in many cases accepted, that research is the only worth-while academic activity and that the university largely exists simply to promote it. In its name the faculty has sometimes even ignored, with official connivance, many of its academic obligations. Although, from the standpoint of the university, teaching is more important, research has become a new industry, a new god whose directives, it is believed, only the illiterate could …

FEATURES

Student Housing
Colby has been a coeducational college for 100 years, but in the 1960s men began to be housed in dormitories formerly considered to be on the "women's side" of the campus and likewise women were housed on the "men's side." The president and trustees have approved "dormitory autonomy." The college has not introduced coeducational dormitories. This article includes the board's statement on the subject.

Appointments
Next fall Colby will have two new deans; a fourth Charles A. Dana Professor and two Avalon Visiting Professors will join the faculty.

Homecoming
The weekends belonged to J. Seelye and Mary Bixler, and would have even if the football team had upset the most powerful Bowdoin squad in many a year. (It nearly did.) The president-emeritus and his wife were honored on Colby Night, and responded with the warmth, charm and wit which characterized the 18 vital Bixler years at Colby.

The 153rd Class Arrives
President Strider, in his traditional address to freshmen on their first day on campus, discussed what the college offers and what can be expected of students: intellectual challenge, social adaptability, a respect for Colby's heritage, and …

Mark Twain's Study Of The Effects Of Slavery And Its Relationship To Training, Sharon Faye Nielson Jan 1971

Mark Twain's Study Of The Effects Of Slavery And Its Relationship To Training, Sharon Faye Nielson

All Master's Theses

This paper presents a study of Mark Twain's treatment of slavery, especially in relation to his theory of training. In his novels Huckleberry Finn, Puddn'head Wilson, The Prince and the Pauper, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court Twain portrays the effects of slavery and training on the personality of the slave and the slaveholder. Twain deals largely with the psychological effects of slavery, which tend to dehumanize both slave and slaveholder, deeply and permanently marking their personalities.

The Teaching Of Social Values In Pre-Engineering Programs At California Public Community Colleges, Wayne Douglas Barton Jan 1971

The Teaching Of Social Values In Pre-Engineering Programs At California Public Community Colleges, Wayne Douglas Barton

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The problem of this study was to investigate the degree to which moral values are· included in the educational program of engineering students at selected California public community colleges. The study also attempted to determine to what degree an increased emphasis on the teaching of moral values would be beneficial to engineering students, as well as others.

A review was made of articles and books on the subject of values. Particular attention was given to material which specifically referred to technology and its relation to values.

Two similarly designed questionnaires were sent out· to students and instructors in engineering education …
