Health Curriculum: Kindergarten Through Tenth Grade, Linda Kay Niendiek
Masters Theses
Objectives
The purpose of this field study was to develop a health curriculum for grades kindergarten through tenth grade of Teutopolis Community Unit School District #50. The reasons for developing this health curriculum were:
- To assure a continuous program of health instruction throughout the Teutopolis School System.
- To assure a program of instruction that follows a logical continuum rather than a repetitious one.
- To assure that students are familiar with the physical, mental, and social aspects of health.
Procedures
Teachers in the elementary grades met on several occasions, in small groups, with the health education teacher to discuss what health …
Students' Needs And Perceptions Of The University Counseling Center At Eastern Illinois University, Eugene Hughley Jr.
Students' Needs And Perceptions Of The University Counseling Center At Eastern Illinois University, Eugene Hughley Jr.
Masters Theses
In May of 1980, this survey was conducted to determine students’ needs and perceptions of university counseling at Eastern Illinois University. 158 students were surveyed using questionnaires. Three areas were focused on: (1) Students’ perceptions of the university counseling center, (2) Students’ needs for counseling, and (3) Students’ willingness to go to the counseling center for help with these needs. The findings suggested that students were generally unaware of the services offered at the counseling center and perceived the center as appropriate for help with educational and vocational problems, but less appropriate for personal and social problems. Students’ chief concerns …

A Study To Determine The Awareness Of Tidewater Industrial Arts Teachers Of The Procedures For Proper Handling Of Toxic Substances, Brigitte Graudins Valesey
OTS Master's Level Projects & Papers
This study sought to answer the following questions: 1. What are the toxic substances used most frequently in industrial arts laboratories? 2. How are each of these substances stored and handled? 3. Who most frequently handles these substances? 4. Are both students and instructors adequately informed of the potential hazards relating to the use of these substances? 5. What recommendations should be made to increase teacher awareness of the harmful side effects of toxic substances, both on them and their students?

A Study To Determine The Acceptance By Potential Employers Of A Cooperative Education Program For Gifted And Talented Students In Newport News Public Schools, Deborah Smith Buchanan
OTS Master's Level Projects & Papers
In order to plan for this proposed cooperative program, it was necessary to gain specific information from the business community on the Peninsula. The goals of this study were: 1. To determine the job placements for gifted and talented students that would be available on the peninsula; 2. To determine the variety of occupational areas that would provide assistance to the program; 3. To determine the job-entry skills that prospective employers would require of a student in the program.

The Educational Impact Of American Church Missionaries On The Educational Programs Of Iran (1834-1925 C.E.), Mansoor Soleimani
The Educational Impact Of American Church Missionaries On The Educational Programs Of Iran (1834-1925 C.E.), Mansoor Soleimani
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The Problem. The present study is an historical study of the educational impact of American church missionaries in the 19th and 20th centuries on the educational programs of Iran. Western church missionaries, particularly Americans, were among the earliest foreign influence to affect the Iranian educational programs. Traditionally, education has been important in Iran's recorded history of 3,000 years. In old and medieval Iran, customs and religious laws were the prevailing systems that influenced individual and group behavior. They also dictated educational policy. When mosques were built under the Muslim faith they became the chief centers of schooling. This type of …

Istj, Religion And Politics: An Editor's View, A. C. Haman
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
During the past year, the Iowa Science Teachers Journal has been criticized (and in one instance politically threatened) for not publishing sectarian interpretations of natural phenomena which conflict with widely accepted scientific theory. It is a policy of the journal not to publish sectarian or political views concerning natural phenomena. The purpose of this editorial is to provide clarification of the journal's role in reporting advances in science and science teaching to the public and parochial schools of the state.

The Iowa Tests Of Basic Skills: Indicators Of Science Achievement, Darrel Hoff, Charles Hohensee
The Iowa Tests Of Basic Skills: Indicators Of Science Achievement, Darrel Hoff, Charles Hohensee
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
In most public schools in Iowa, the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) are administered to grades three through eight. These tests provide a wealth of information concerning achievement in basic academic skills, but they do not provide a direct assessment of achievement of scientific skills. As a result, junior high teachers often have little data for assessing the scientific abilities of their students unless they administer additional tests. Science achievement, per se, is not usually measured in Iowa's public schools until the ninth grade, when students are given the Iowa Tests of Educational Development (ITED).

Educational Handicaps In Chemistry Students, Charles Douglass Jr.
Educational Handicaps In Chemistry Students, Charles Douglass Jr.
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Research has been carried out to determine which characteristics and abilities are the best predictors of success in a college level chemistry course. Much of the work has centered on achievement measures such as high school chemistry performance, SAT or ACT scores, and the like. Factors other than demonstrated aptitude and ability are also important to success. Some research has looked at the effect of cognitive styles and motivational factors in attempting to predict success. Recent studies in our department indicate that most students who do not perform well may be thought of as suffering from an educational handicap, where …
The Maligned And Misunderstood North American Badger, Richard Lampe
The Maligned And Misunderstood North American Badger, Richard Lampe
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The common though highly elusive North American badger is seldom seen and often misunderstood. When badgers are encountered by man, the experience is frequently startling to both parties. Impressions based on such limited and stress-filled information are biased. For example, it is widely believed that this member of the family Mustelidae (which also includes skunks, otters and weasels) is vicious, mean and aggressive. However, personal experience with badgers gained from studies over the past 10 years indicates that, although quite capable of defending themselves, badgers are shy, secretive and good bluffers.

Evaluation Of Affective Behaviors Of High School Science Students, Gary E. Downs
Evaluation Of Affective Behaviors Of High School Science Students, Gary E. Downs
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
American education has been in a constant state of change during the last half-century. Some of the changes in science education are being questioned by the critics. Some of the criticism has come about because of the emphasis on subject matter content and very little emphasis, if any at all, on values. Science education must be part of the movement to a more humanistic education for young people. One method that teachers can use to help determine the direction of science education is to try and teach for and measure the affective behavior of their students. This paper is a …
