Teaching Creation And Evolution In Iowa Schools, Jack Gerlovich Jan 1980

Teaching Creation And Evolution In Iowa Schools, Jack Gerlovich

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In February, 1977 a bill (H.F. 154) was introduced in the Iowa House of Representatives that read as follows: "If a public school district offers courses which teach pupils about the origin of humankind and which include scientific theories relating to origin, instruction shall include consideration of the creation theory as supported by modern sciences."' In May 1977 the Urbandale School District made a written appeal to the Iowa Department of Public Instruction to consult with experts in the science community to determine if the evidence used to support the creationist theory was credible and should be made available to …

Geology Is: A Geosciences Program For High School Students, Rion D. Turley

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Project "Geology Is" arose out of a desire to fill an apparent gap in science education at the secondary level. It was noted that, over the years, the traditional secondary science sequence of biology, chemistry, and physics has several very weak aspects.

Mct - A Competency Test For Westville, Illinois, Eighth And Twelfth Graders, Larry Huber

Masters Theses

In Westville, Illinois, Minimal Competency Testing (MCT) began in the spring of 1979, after the writer of this paper and a colleague attended a meeting in Peoria, Illinois. This two day workshop focused on the Peoria MCT program and provided the initial impetus for Westville's developing program.

Westville's preliminary MCT work preceded our initial inservice day in August of 1979. Our MCT work in Westville concentrated totally on grades 8 and 12. At this initial meeting of all district staff members, we asked all present to submit suggested skill statements. A special survey instrument was used for this purpose. Next …

Curriculum Development For Cooperative Education, Ann Ferris Jan 1980

Curriculum Development For Cooperative Education, Ann Ferris

Masters Theses

The Cooperative Education program at Lake Land College strives to provide training for students in any vocational/technical career. This is accomplished by individualizing curriculum plans using courses available on campus and securing a training station for them in local business or industrial establishments. Title VIII funding for the school year 1979 - 80 provided an opportunity to develop curriculum packages for ten of the most requested career areas. These ten areas were identified by using current students' career choices as well as by examining the records of past Cooperative Education students.

Commercial vocational material catalogs, educational curriculum guides, and the …

Evidence From Science And Tradition Supporting A Two-Model (Evolution/Creation) Approach To Teaching The Origin Of Life, Robert P. Gardner Jan 1980

Evidence From Science And Tradition Supporting A Two-Model (Evolution/Creation) Approach To Teaching The Origin Of Life, Robert P. Gardner

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This study gathered material presenting flood traditions in agreement with data concerning models of origins, selected material for supplementing classroom materials, and determined public opinion as how the subject of origins should be taught in public schools. Surveys recommend a two-model (evolution/creation) approach be taught within scientific limitations in public schools. Materials are available to promote this approach legally, fairly, and scientifically. Because of the evolution model's inadequacies, a reinterpretation of equivalent data allowing for catastrophic universal flood concepts is needed. Part of this reinterpretation may be supplied by the canopy model, as well as the many worldwide flood traditions. …

An Educational Philosophy For American Medical School Curricula, Richard Bruce Donker Jan 1980

An Educational Philosophy For American Medical School Curricula, Richard Bruce Donker

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

American medicine has undergone dramatic changes in the past two decades. The launching of Sputnik I by the Russians in 1957 led the United States government to place an extraordinary emphasis upon science and technology that has been responsible for a staggering array of technological and knowledge breakthrough in medicine. Social changes have created stresses that have resulted in a high percentage of emotional and psychological illnesses. As a result of the impersonal nature of modern technological medicine and the need for emotional and psychological guidance, the American public has turned recently toward alternate methods of healing. Many of these …

Needed: A New View Of Art And Emotions, Ann Sherman Jan 1980

Needed: A New View Of Art And Emotions, Ann Sherman

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Progressives have often neglected or purposely ignored the role of art and emotions in their analyses. Recently, however, critical theorists like Max Horkheiner and Theodore Adorno have focused on the place of the "subjective" (which usually includes art and emotions) in the economic framework of society. That such individuals have attempted to include art and emotions in their broad political/economic dimension is especially important for progressive art educators to pursue at this point in history. Art therapy programs which do not include a political/economic analysis of the images produced or the emotions expressed are becoming a significant entity within our …

Comparison Study Of Achievement Of A Group Of Second Grade Students Experiencing Instruction On Bio-Ecosystems Indoors And A Group Of Second Grade Students Experiencing Instruction On Bio-Ecosystems Out-Of-Doors, Voncile Barnes Jackson

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in the achievement levels of second grade students when twenty-one students experienced instruction on the bio-ecosystems where the learning activities were primarily outdoors along a nature trail and a comparable group of twenty-three students experienced instruction on the same bio-ecosystems where the learning activities were located indoors. An emphasis on literature approach was utilized to teach a set of sixteen objectives centering around an environmental theme. Each group received instruction for-45 minutes daily for a period of three weeks and experienced equivalent "hands-on" learning activities.
A gain score was determined …
