Incivility among nursing students is well documented in the academic, clinical, and leadership literature. Student incivility towards faculty was less studied, and merited investigation because incivility can lead to faculty discontentment, stress, and attrition, exacerbating the scarcity of nursing faculty. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study, which was underpinned by the health belief model, was to explore the perceptions of nursing faculty who experience student incivility in the Western region of the United States. This study, which was underpinned by the ServQual model aims to determine the perceptions of library staff of Makerere and Uganda Christian Universities on the provision of virtual library and information services (VLIS), the challenges faced and strategies for the enhancement of VLIS provision. A qualitative design was used to collect data from eight library staff who were selected through purposive sampling until data reached saturation. The findings indicated that majority of librarians exhibit poor perceptions towards VLIS; as manifested in their reluctance to participate in VLIS provision, their conservatism, which impedes acceptance of new VLIS and their …

There is a shortage of teachers among rapidly expanding populations of culturally diverse students in K-12 education. Minority students enrolled in public schools have been rising while the number of minority teachers has been falling. Twenty percent of teachers are from ethnic and racial backgrounds, however, schools educate majority-minority populations. What is most troubling, is that the most negatively impacted student of K-12 diverse populations is African-American males. What is new?

While Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have, in recent years, placed greater emphasis on promoting good research practices, it is yet relatively unknown what leadership approaches are best suited to cultivating a positive culture of research integrity (RI) in HEIs. This small-scale exploratory descriptive study therefore sought to uncover initial findings from within the European context on practices research leaders found to be most effective in leading positive change in this space.

This essay provides a two-pronged critical assessment of a subset of the literature on racial disproportionality in special education: that which aims to estimate racial disparities among otherwise similar children. This body of research has shown that Black students are less likely than comparable White students to receive special education, and has been interpreted by many to mean that current policies meant to reduce Black over-representation may be exacerbating inequality. Our essay argues that this subset of research has fundamental limitations in its covariate adjustment practices and its data quality, making “under-representation” findings questionable. Objective: To understand 14-17-year-old youth’s perceptions of the field of dietetics and what would influence them to pursue or not pursue dietetics as a career. Design: Researchers developed an electronic survey asking about youth’s perceptions of the dietetics profession. Setting/Participants: The survey was distributed to a diverse population of youth aged 14-17 in the USA. Main Outcome Measures: Researchers aimed to understand what qualities 14-17-year-olds associate with dietetics professionals and if youth are interested in and/or view themselves as capable of becoming a dietitian. The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in knowledge of post-stroke aphasia among students who watched an informational video (Kennedy et al., 2012a) created for this study compared to students who read an informational text (National Aphasia Association, n.d.). Participants included 136 undergraduate and graduate students who completed a pre-test, watched an informational video or read an informational text, completed a post-test, and then completed a maintenance test approximately four weeks later. This article describes a collaborative project across multiple institutions to compare two versions of a regression activity: (a) a website version that collected student data through an online simulation with corresponding apps for visualization and (b) a traditional paper handout version that had a static dataset. This allowed us to evaluate the differences in student learning and attitudes when students have a stronger connection with the data through an interactive—and hopefully fun—data-collection process than they do when they are given a worksheet with a pre-collected dataset. U.S. higher educational institutions have increasingly implemented diversity requirements; however, institutional power dynamics during the implementation process and in a classroom after the implementation should be more highlighted. This study aims to understand the implementation of a diversity requirement during the implementation process and faculty and student experiences within required diversity courses at Portland State University (PSU) by analyzing one-on-one semi-structured interviews. PSU is a minority-serving educational institution that implemented a diversity requirement, the Race and Ethnic Studies Requirement (RESR), in Fall 2022. Critical family scholars have highlighted that structurally diverse families (e.g. stepfamilies, single-parent families) are often unfairly viewed through a deficit-comparison lens. This includes assumptions that these families are less optimal contexts for raising children than married different-sex nuclear families or hold different parenting and family values. In the present study, we sought to challenge that assumption by having parents rate the importance of developmental assets for their adolescent children and then comparing perceived importance across family structures. To do so we used data from 354 parents (24.6% single-parent families, 16.7% stepfamilies, 58.8% two-biological/adoptive parent families). We found that the overwhelming …

This qualitative research study was conducted to better understand women leaders’ perceptions of compassion in higher education. Specifically, what are the types of distressing events and the settings wherein a compassionate response was offered; what are the compassionate actions experienced or offered, and what might enhance or inhibit the process of compassion. The study was also conducted to examine if and how compassion enhances or influences learning (Knowles, 2011), growing and healing (Rogers, 1967), and thriving at work (McGregor, 1960). It explores the potential of a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) curriculum, aiming to provide equitable learning opportunities, especially for emerging bilingual (EB) student populations. Extending and challenging existing research about LGBTQIA+ life in rural educational contexts, this ethnographically informed qualitative study describes how Lulu—a white, cisgender, queer secondary English language arts teacher in a rural, public school in the Midwest—discursively constructed the functions of her humor with respect to teaching, queerness, and their interrelations. Drawing on social theorizations of humor, particularly queer theorizations of humor, this article argues that Lulu described her humor as having three functions: building relationships, facilitating learning, and opening possibilities for queerness. My dissertation investigates what contributes to low community college completion rates, what college interventions may be working to support students, what are the experiences of the students, and how did the COVID-19 pandemic impact these dynamics. I am guided by the assumption that multi-dimensional inequalities including low level of social capital constitute a cumulative disadvantage for many students to be able to persist and to graduate. This study evaluates the capabilities and limitations of large language models (LLMs), specifically OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4o, in grading essays from students in the City University of New York’s Language Immersion Program. The program serves English language learners with diverse linguistic and demographic backgrounds, offering intensive language instruction to prepare students for academic success in college. Using a dataset of 30 pre- and post-program essays scored by program instructors and ChatGPT-4o under three paradigms, this research explores the alignment between human and AI-generated scores across five rubric-based competency areas. Black educational history has been told through a predominantly Southern lens. This dissertation highlights the experiences of Black educators in the urban North during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Northern Black educators confronted the challenges of freedom—including the constant need to protect it—using a set of approaches influenced by the various intersecting social movements and intellectual currents of their day. While these educators represented a small minority of African Americans, their contributions were profound, leaving legacies that provide a lens for understanding and improving issues facing urban Black youth and their communities today.

The study has added focus on its usefulness in facilitating English language learning. The study sample involved 420 female secondary stage students within one educational district in Riyadh. The field of speech-language pathology has demonstrated growth in bilingual assessment and evaluations. However, many questions remain regarding formal and informal assessment practices, intervention recommendations, and cultural competency or responsiveness. Sixty-one SLPs in Virginia completed a survey on demographics, bilingual assessment practices, cultural competence, and language development of ELL students. Seven SLPs who work with bilingual and/or ELL students were also interviewed to ascertain bilingual assessment practices, cultural competence, and language development knowledge. This dissertation explores how culturally sustaining pedagogy and arts-based learning can engage multilingual learners of English as an Additional Language (EAL) in Burkina Faso. The research emphasizes the incorporation of local cultural elements and learners' linguistic backgrounds into the EAL curriculum to address challenges such as limited classroom interactions (Somé-Guiebré, 2020) and monolingual instructional strategies with inadequate cultural representation (Ndlangamandla, 2024). This qualitative study integrates culturally relevant materials, including Forum Theater, slam poetry, and griot-style storytelling, to create an engaging and inclusive learning environment. The Socio-Critical Assessment Integration Framework (SCAIF) and its consequences for social studies education are examined in this study. The results emphasize the advantages of developing inclusive learning environments, encouraging comprehensive evaluation procedures, encouraging applicability to the real world, and giving students agency by allowing participation in the evaluation process actively. Teachers can promote social justice, question prevailing narratives, and foster critical discourse in the classroom using a critical pedagogy lens. This paper shares evidence of how four programs enhanced students' pathways from high school through bachelor's degrees. Each program expanded students' networks, fostered a sense of belonging, and developed critical thinking skills. Ten years after participation, we looked back to gain insights into key elements that impacted students' learning experience. Data from student voices highlighted the importance of inclusiveness in action, institutional responsibility, and culturally relevant pedagogy in student success and program impact.
