Recovery Capital Among Students In Collegiate Recovery Programs At Two-Year And Four-Year Higher Education Institutions In West Virginia, Amy M. Saunders

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Collegiate Recovery Programs (CRPs) have been around for decades, supporting higher education students by offering supports, resources, and a community. However, most existing research focuses on four-year institutions, and there is limited data on recovery supports at twoyear institutions, as well as limited research on recovery capital among this population. This study explores differences in recovery capital, a measure of internal and external resources supporting recovery, among students in CRPs at two-year versus four-year institutions in West Virginia by answering the following questions: 1.) Are there differences between students’ reported recovery capital index (RCI) scores based on institution type? 2.) …

Findings indicate that students employ a multi-faceted set of strategies across all domains, with moderate to high levels of use and effectiveness. Information Processing strategies, particularly logically organized content, were reported as most frequently used and highly effective. Personal and Behavioral strategies, including self-monitoring, goalsetting, and active engagement, were widely applied …

Creating A Culture Of Care: An Exploratory Study Of The Impact Of Community-Building Circles On The Elementary Learning Environment And Classroom Dynamics, Jennifer Cipolla

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Providing students with opportunities to connect has never been more critical, especially in today’s increasingly isolated and divided society. By incorporating community-building circles into the regular classroom routine, educators can positively impact various aspects of students’ experiences in school. Not only does circle practice nurture students’ sense of belonging in the educational community and help them sharpen interpersonal skills, but it also prepares young learners for life beyond school, setting them up for future success. Using principles from Lev Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, Martin Seligman’s well-being theory, and social-emotional learning theory, the researcher in this study examined the influence of community-building …

Launching Cures In Non-Traditional Settings: How One Honors Program Propels Primary Research For The Institution, Kathryn M. Macdonald

Honors in Practice Online Archive

This essay considers how course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) can drive original research. Honors students in career-oriented majors (accounting, hospitality management, health services administration, criminal justice) develop primary research studies that are proposed for institutional review and then conducted within a specific population across the university. The author describes the CURE model within an honors curriculum, observing that it actively engages students in the full research cycle from conceptualization to dissemination and fosters critical thinking, methodological rigor, and ethical awareness. The author recommends its use in either group or individual settings to honors programs seeking to position students as active …

Human service professionals, as generalists in the behavioral health field, provide vital treatment, recovery, and prevention services for individuals with substance use and addictive disorders. This paper explores the implications of these legislative changes, particularly regarding privacy protections …

"What Is Title Ix? What's It Mean?": An Instrumental Case Study In Today's Secondary Schools, Kristin Haggerty

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Sexual harassment and assault, as defined by Title IX, are widespread issues in middle and high schools, yet schools often fail to provide sufficient education to students and staff about the policy and its protections (Grant et al., 2019). A Mixed Methods Study Of Teacher Perceptions Of Restorative Practice In The Classroom, Crystal Brown

Doctor of Education Dissertations

This mixed methods study explored the perceptions of teachers in North Carolina alternative schools regarding the implementation and impact of restorative practices (RPs) on professional practice, student behavior, academic progress, and reentry outcomes after behavioral incidents. A sequential explanatory mixed methods design was used, beginning with an 18-item Likert scale survey completed by 30 educators and followed by 10 semi-structured interviews. Quantitative findings revealed moderate agreement that RP improved classroom management and conflict resolution, though academic and attendance gains were limited. Qualitative findings offered deeper insight into how restorative circles cultivated trust, accountability, and student voice, enabling more effective student-teacher …
