Perceptions Of Water Competencies, Drowning Risk And Aquatic Participation Among Older Adults, Teresa Stanley, Kevin Moran Feb 2021

Perceptions Of Water Competencies, Drowning Risk And Aquatic Participation Among Older Adults, Teresa Stanley, Kevin Moran

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

New Zealand has an aging population and, despite falling drowning tolls in all other age groups (WSNZ, 2019c), older adults have continued to drown in both increasing numbers and proportion. The reasons for this are not well understood since very little drowning research has focused on older people. A water safety survey (N = 389) seeking information on older adults’ aquatic recreational practices and perceptions of safety was conducted at the end of the summer season, 2019. Most adults (86%, n = 335) reported some aquatic activity in the previous year, but those aged 65+ years (66%) were significantly …

The Lifeguard Rescue Reporting System: Survey Results From A Collaborative Data Collection Method, William D. Ramos, Roy Fielding, Kristina R. Anderson, Peter G. Wernicki Md

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Several water safety organizations have attempted to improve reporting regarding lifeguard actions in order to better understand the characteristics of successful, non-fatal rescues. In 2003, a collective effort initiated the Lifeguard Rescue Reporting System, an online survey distributed to lifeguards and facility managers across the United States and Canada to better understand rescue actions performed in pools/spas, water parks, and open water areas. After seven years of data collection, the online survey accumulated data reflecting 1,676 rescue actions, collecting information including location, victim characteristics and outcome, rescuer characteristics and strategies, and other general circumstances. Descriptive results indicated that at least …

The Prevalence Of Mtss Symptoms Among Men And Women Ncaa Division Iii Student Athletes, Amanda Combs, Kristen Mcalexander

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Symptoms of Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS) are common among athletes of various sports and levels, but studies describing the prevalence of MTSS symptoms are lacking. Possible contributing factors of MTSS include an individual’s flexor digitorum longus attachment and soleus muscle, a pronated foot, large loads of mechanical forces, large calf girth, and gender. No individual factor has been statistically associated with MTSS, and prevention and treatment are difficult to study. Further, no earlier studies have described the prevalence of MTSS symptoms for men and women NCAA student athletes among various sports. PURPOSE: To measure and describe MTSS symptoms among …

Menstrual Phase Symptoms And Perceived Musculoskeletal Strength And Flexibility Among Ncaa Collegiate Athletes, Ashton N. Vasquez, Kristen Mcalexander

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Previous findings suggest that the associations among menstrual hormones, symptoms and human performance are inconsistent and lacking. Earlier research has measured hormonal fluctuations and symptoms from each of the four menstrual phases (menstrual, follicular, ovulation, and luteal), but their physiological effects on perceived musculoskeletal strength and perceived flexibility remain unclear, particularly among college athletes. PURPOSE: To measure the prevalence and associations among self-reported menstrual symptoms, perceived overall strength and perceived flexibility in NCAA female athletes during each of the four menstrual phases. METHODS: In the Fall of 2020, a survey consisting of demographic questions and questions of perceived strength, flexibility, …

Anthropometric Predictors Of Concentric Hip, Knee, And Ankle Work During A 5x5 Conventional Deadlift Routine, Dale S. Keith, Daniel Scherrer, Brandon Nunley, John R. Harry, Grant M. Tinsley

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The deadlift is one of the most commonly performed exercises to strengthen the lower body, as well as one of the main lifts in powerlifting and strongman competitions. However, literature exploring the deadlift exercise and its variations remains quite limited compared to other popular exercises like squats and bench press. PURPOSE: The purpose of this exploratory analysis was to determine if there are relationships between anthropometric characteristics (arm length, torso length, thigh length, and shank length) and hip, knee, and ankle joint angular concentric work during a 5 sets of 5 repetitions (5x5) conventional deadlift (CDL) routine. METHODS: …

Harty, Christian Rodriguez, Dale Keith, Jacob Green, Jake Boykin, Jacob Dellinger, Sarah White, Abegale D. Williams, Grant M. Tinsley

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

In the growing world of health and well-being, three-dimensional (3D) scanning is emerging as a popular tool to assess body composition. While body composition cannot be truly “measured” in living humans, it can be approximated. This, however, leads to two types of errors (i.e., technical and biological) in the body composition assessment. PURPOSE: This study was used to determine what percent or range of percentages in body fat one must exceed before concluding a real change has occurred. By conducting assessments on separate days, with only a short period of time between them, true changes in body composition are …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Ultrasound assessments of quadriceps cross-sectional area (CSA) and echo intensity (EI) are commonly used to evaluate lower-body muscle size and quality in older adults. It has been hypothesized that muscle CSA and EI of the quadriceps may be important predictors of functional performances such as gait speed and vertical jump power. However, limited data exist regarding how these parameters associate with performance during a timed up-and-go (TUG) task. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between TUG performance and muscle CSA and EI of the quadriceps in older women. METHODS: Twenty healthy older women …
