Take A Risk Or Play It Safe? Views Held By Student-Athletes, Russell D. Ravert, Marissa K. Turner, Wenting Sun
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
Because assessing and managing risks is an integral part of sports, athletes may develop general beliefs regarding taking and avoiding risks that they draw upon. This qualitative study used inductive content analysis of survey responses to examine risk-related experiences and attitudes in sample of U.S. NCAA Division I college student-athletes (N = 101) from a variety of sports. Participants were asked to describe situations they experienced that required deciding whether or not to take risks, and to describe their “personal philosophy” on taking risks and playing it safe. Thematic analysis identified five situational contexts in which the student-athletes said …

#Rookieparty: The Intersections Of Social Media, Hazing, And Canadian Varsity Sport, Jay Johnson Dr., Geneva Gudmundson, Jessica W. Chin, Margery Holman
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
Prior to the start of the pandemic in 2020, almost two-thirds of all varsity athletes across gender and sport in Canada had engaged in a sport hazing ritual (Johnson et al., 2018). While hazing in sport has been researched from a variety of perspectives, few studies have examined hazing in the context of varsity athletes' social media use. This is a potential space where Johnson (2017) suggested that technological tools such as cellphones, that provide instant access to social media, have enabled users to more easily capture and post online, potentially exacerbating the trauma inflicted on rookies during team hazing …

Eating What They Kill: The Stark Reality Of Athlete Compensation In Mixed Martial Arts And Potential Solutions, Christopher Piel
Eating What They Kill: The Stark Reality Of Athlete Compensation In Mixed Martial Arts And Potential Solutions, Christopher Piel
Arkansas Law Review
“They eat what they kill.” Dana White, President of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (“UFC”) said this about the state of fighter pay in the organization. White, the voice of the company, holds firm that fighters are adequately compensated for their services. The reality is that UFC fighters are not paid what they deserve, and, one way or another, there are big changes coming to the organization and the sport of Mixed Martial Arts (“MMA”) as a whole. In this Comment, I will discuss how the UFC has used its market power to suppress fighters’ wages and subject fighters to inequitable …
Antecedents Of Brand Authenticity In Cause-Related Sport Marketing Campaigns, Keevan Statz, Brian Gordon
Antecedents Of Brand Authenticity In Cause-Related Sport Marketing Campaigns, Keevan Statz, Brian Gordon
Journal of Applied Sport Management
Cause-related sport marketing (CRSM) has been a popular managerial technique over the last two decades. There is a common perception that for CRSM to be effective, consumers must perceive the sponsoring brand to be authentic in its actions. Minimal empirical research has analyzed the antecedent factors that lead consumers to perceive a brand as authentic in CRSM. Using multiple linear regression, six antecedent factors’ impact on brand authenticity were tested. Perceptions of the brand’s motives and brand transparency were found to have a statistically significant impact on brand authenticity.

The Role Of Fans’ Responses To Sponsorship Activation In Shaping Sport Sponsorship Effectiveness, Junyi Bian, Benjamin Colin Cork
Journal of Applied Sport Management
The study explored how types of benefit in sponsorship affect fans’ inference of sponsors’ motives and their consequences on sponsorship effectiveness. A total of 1,478 National Basketball Association fans were recruited via Amazon Mechanical Turk and completed surveys through Qualtrics. Findings indicated that sponsors’ motives varied with types of benefit, with egoistic motives linked to utilitarian benefit and altruistic or normative motives tied to hedonic and social benefit. These results extended previous research by exploring more than the altruistic-egoistic motive dichotomy in linking benefit types to sponsorship effectiveness, highlighting the importance of aligning benefit with fan preference to boost relevance.

Matching Colors In Jersey Sponsorship: The Effect Of Team-Colored Sponsor Logo On Jersey Aesthetics And Purchase Intention, Sung Wook Son, Antonio Williams
Journal of Applied Sport Management
In jersey sponsorship, some sponsors today have decided to modify their logo colors to match the team colors. The present research examined the role of team-colored sponsor logo in jersey sponsorship, paying particular attention to its impact on perceived aesthetics of the jersey and fans’ willingness to purchase. Three experiments using both fictitious and actual sponsors across two different sports showed that the team-colored sponsor logo on a jersey was a positive predictor for both perceived aesthetics and purchase intention at all levels of team identification. The findings also revealed the indirect effect of the team-colored sponsor logo on purchase …

Validity Of Jump Height Using An Athlete Monitoring Wearable, Drew J. Smith, Kuan Chen, James B. Mann, Jennifer M. Yentes
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Wearables for player monitoring have become common in collegiate and professional sports. Teams utilize wearable technology to gather volume and intensity data from practice and games throughout a season. Wearable data can be used as an objective marker to indicate when an athlete has met or exceeded a volume threshold. Inaccurate data could lead to improper modifications in training that could negatively impact player performance during a season. A frequently used metric to monitor athletes is jump height; however, like many other metrics calculated by player monitoring wearables, the validity is unknown. PURPOSE: To test the validity of jump …

Assessment Of Estimated Pulse Wave Velocity And Body Roundness Index Among First Responders, Asma-Maria El-Tayssoun, Jillian Liebert, Steven E. Martin, Drew E. Gonzalez
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
First responders have a heightened cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Estimated pulse wave velocity (ePWV) and body roundness index (BRI) are associated with CVD risk. These parameters may provide a more comprehensive insight into the risk of CVD and premature mortality than conventional parameters (i.e., blood lipids). PURPOSE: This study assessed the relationship between ePWV, BRI, and several conventional CVD risk, fitness, and body composition parameters and compared these variables between sub-first responder groups. METHODS: One hundred and seventy-one (n=171) first responders (98 firefighters [FF] and 73 law enforcement officers[LEO]) completed a battery of clinical testing during …
No Impact Of Cardiorespiratory Fitness On The Stress Responses To Firefighting, Leah Kirkegaard, Kelly Hines, Ryan J. Sowinski, Steven E. Martin, Lisa C. Colvin, Matthew J. Mcallister, Drew E. Gonzalez
No Impact Of Cardiorespiratory Fitness On The Stress Responses To Firefighting, Leah Kirkegaard, Kelly Hines, Ryan J. Sowinski, Steven E. Martin, Lisa C. Colvin, Matthew J. Mcallister, Drew E. Gonzalez
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Firefighting can exacerbate cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and has been shown to elevate α-amylase (AA), secretory immunoglobulin-A (SIgA), and cortisol. Data suggest firefighters may not meet cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) standards. It is unclear if CRF levels impact the stress response to firefighting. Given the premature mortality risk, there is a critical need to understand the impact of CRF on firefighting stress responses. PURPOSE: This study assessed the impact of CRF on the stress response to an LFTE. METHODS: Forty-four (n=44) firefighters completed a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPXT) and an LFTE. V̇O 2max was estimated via the Foster equation. The occupational …

Isometric Belt Squat Knee Position Affects Mediolateral Kinetics, Arianna N. Eyre, Madison Treece, J Bryan Mann, Jennifer M. Yentes
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The isometric belt squat has grown in popularity as a lower body strength assessment, given its reduction in spinal loading and limited involvement of the upper extremity compared to other whole-body isometric test variations. Previous research has identified knee angle ranges for the isometric belt squat that are more advantageous for vertical force generation. The relationship of knee angle and anteroposterior and mediolateral forces has not been established for the isometric belt squat. Since ground reaction force is three-dimensional, examination into anteroposterior and mediolateral forces will provide additional information on how force is developed for this movement as well as …

The Role Of The Exerkine Apelin In Age-Related Sarcopenia, Dillon R. Harris, Quinten W. Pigg, Daniela S. Inoue, Mariana Janini Gomes
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Apelin is an exercise-induced peptide that declines with age and is positively associated with exercise-induced benefits in older individuals. This molecule may therein have a potential role in combatting sarcopenia—age-related progressive loss of muscle mass and strength—when combined with exercise; however, the molecular mechanisms behind its autocrine function remain unclear. PURPOSE: To investigate how aerobic exercise impacts skeletal muscle apelin signaling, focusing on its potential in counteracting the age-related loss of skeletal muscle. METHODS: 22 Fisher 344 male rats (3- and 21-month-old) were obtained from NIA rodent colonies. Experimental groups were randomly divided: young sedentary (Y, n=5); young …
