Re-Envisioning Self And Community: The Experiences Of Pilipina American Students With Colonial Mentality And Decolonization, Kristine Angelica Din
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation explores the invisibility of Pilipina American narratives in higher education by investigating colonialism and colonial mentality and how they may shape the experiences of Pilipina American undergraduate students in higher education. This study was framed by Pinayism (Tintiangco-Cubales, 2005; Tintiangco-Cubales & Sacramento, 2009), Strobel’s (2001) decolonization framework, and the Colonial Mentality Scale (CMS) (David & Okazaki, 2006b). Participants reflected upon their life stories to explore and make meaning of the ways their lives have been informed by events that have occurred and the messages they received from their families, peers, teachers, and communities. Addressing Public Speaking Anxiety In Multicultural Counselling: The Use Of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy For International Students, Moh. Khoerul Anwar, Muhammad Izzul Haq, Diafi Salma, Zhongjun Wang
Jurnal Kajian Bimbingan dan Konseling
Several studies have highlighted the importance of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in reducing public speaking anxiety. The studies also denote the increase of confidence by strengthening self-efficacy. This study explores previous studies that uncover the use of CBT in dealing with public anxiety to identify its potential as part of multicultural counseling for international students in higher education. International students have different academic and learning cultures, as well as social environments, affecting the development of certain anxiety in dealing with pressures to adapt to new environments. Therefore, it positions the investigation of CBT’s ability to reduce public speaking anxiety for …

Challenges Of Transitioning Back To School From Hospitalization: The Role Of Child Life Specialists In Schools, Kelsey Bannen
Honors Program Theses and Projects
When students return to school after hospitalization, many aspects of their development are impacted. During the transition back to school after hospitalization students often face social, emotional, and academic challenges. Child life specialists typically work in hospital settings to support the social-emotional well-being of pediatric patients. Child life specialists are highly equipped to support students returning to school after hospitalization and would be a valuable asset to all school systems. Research for this study was conducted through literature reviews, an interview with a child life specialist who is currently working within a school, and surveys of school nurses and child …

Experiential Learning Of School Counselors-In-Training To Work With English Learners, Qi Shi, Cielo Cournoyer, Ashlei Randolph, Matthew Scheffenacker, Jasmine Brown
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
While the need for school counselors to support ELs is prominent, school counselors believed they were not well prepared to effectively work with EL students. To inform and strengthen our practice, we engaged in a practitioner inquiry study to understand the lived experiences of school counselors-in-training (SCITs) in an experiential learning activity to work with English Learners. Three themes emerged from the qualitative analysis of classroom observations, SCITs’ reflection journal entries, and transcripts of a focus group: (a) SCITs’ perceived challenges, (b) strategies used to overcome challenges and (c) how this experiential training benefited their future work as a school …

Orthographic Mapping: A Tool For Success In Reading, Vocabulary Word Knowledge, Meaning, And Self Teaching In The Primary Grades, Lauren Eisnor
Orthographic Mapping: A Tool For Success In Reading, Vocabulary Word Knowledge, Meaning, And Self Teaching In The Primary Grades, Lauren Eisnor
Masters Projects
High frequency words are words that appear often within text. These words often contain unfamiliar letter/sound patterns. In the past, educators have encouraged students to learn high frequency words beyond their level of decoding skill by techniques such as memorization, chants and mnemonics. Research is showing that students are capable of decoding words with unfamiliar letter/sound patterns; when they use phonic skills to do this work the words are stored in their memories. Orthographic mapping provides a structure by which students are able to practice listening for sounds, and determining corresponding letter patterns. Students are capable of decoding challenging letter/sound …

Boosting Attendance Through Relationships, Mia Ferguson
Boosting Attendance Through Relationships, Mia Ferguson
Masters Projects
Research has shown that students who feel a sense of belonging or personal connectedness in school have higher academic achievement. This project is to help my school Westfield Preparatory High School with its attendance issues. Since COVID, we have struggled to make daily attendance, so I chose this research project to give me better insight based on the issues staff and students gave for chronic absenteeism. I created an in-service for teachers to let them know how important teacher-student relationships are. During this in-service, I will present my research to teachers and present an academic coaching program where teachers will …
An Examination Of Interventions For Decreasing Academic Failure In Low-Income Students, Amy Elizabeth Mroczek
An Examination Of Interventions For Decreasing Academic Failure In Low-Income Students, Amy Elizabeth Mroczek
Masters Projects
Students from lower income brackets have a higher risk of not completing school. School misbehavior, school mobility, grade retention, homework completion, school safety, attendance, academic self-efficacy, academic engagement, and academic expectations were all uniquely related to grade point average and experiencing two of the risk factors was predictive of academic failure. The developed sessions were based on self-determination theory and motivational interviewing skills. The sessions include strategies to help with organization, time-management, and self-advocacy. These sessions are also designed to create a support system with peers and a trusted adult. Over the course of six small groups students will be …

The Association Of Psychotherapist Cultural Humility And Client Experiences And Outcomes In Psychotherapy: A Meta-Analysis, Lisa Michelle Scott
The Association Of Psychotherapist Cultural Humility And Client Experiences And Outcomes In Psychotherapy: A Meta-Analysis, Lisa Michelle Scott
Theses and Dissertations
Psychotherapist multicultural competence has been given increasing attention in the field of psychology since the 1970s. However, individuals and communities who are Black, Indigenous, or People of Color are still less likely to attend psychotherapy and often drop out earlier than White clients. These trends highlight the importance of the ongoing research on therapist multicultural competence. There are many multicultural competencies, however, the current study focuses on therapist cultural humility. Specifically, we systematically searched all the current research on the association between cultural humility and client experiences and outcomes in therapy. Our literature search yielded eight studies that met our …

Teacher Home Visits: Changes In Perceptions Of Key Stakeholders, Kevin R. Thomas
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Teacher home visits have been shown to improve student attendance, academics and to reduce behavior issues. Three groups are involved: the student, the teacher, and the family (or parent). This research focused on determining if and how the teacher home visit changes the perspectives, expectations, and relationships of these three groups. A survey followed by interviews of some of the students, parents, and teachers was used. The surveys and the interviews were evaluated. Results indicated that perceptions and relationships between stakeholders were improved. Due to low participation rates, results must be interpreted with caution. With these considerations in mind, I …
