Situated within a small private university in New York State, the article considers implementation as both curricular revision and institutional change. The process included faculty professional learning, curriculum mapping, alignment of student learning outcomes, revision of common course assessments, development of SoR-aligned models of candidate work, and consideration of clinical experiences. Particular attention is given to tensions that emerged around policy fatigue, academic freedom and responsibility, differing professional cultures, candidates’ prior experiences with literacy …

Medical School Admissions Officers' Perceptions On Lower Admissions Rates Of Black Applicants In Georgia, Wanda Sebrena Thomas

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem addressed through this study was the disproportionate lower admission rates of Black students compared to their White counterparts at a Georgia medical school. Grounded in Bourdieu’s theory of social reproduction, the purpose of this study was to explore admission officers’ perceptions on the factors contributing to lower admission rates of Black applicants at a Georgia medical school. For this basic qualitative design, semistructured interviews with 10 admissions officers were conducted. Through Saldaña’s first- and second-cycle coding procedures, the following nine themes emerged: (a) Medical College Admission Test scores create barriers for Black applicants; (b) unequal educational resources and …

Counselors-In-Training’S Perceptions Of Counselor Educators’ And Supervisors’ Roles In Developing Grief Counseling Self-Efficacy, Tonya Andrews Sep 2026

Counselors-In-Training’S Perceptions Of Counselor Educators’ And Supervisors’ Roles In Developing Grief Counseling Self-Efficacy, Tonya Andrews

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Counselors-in-training (CITs) encounter grieving clients despite limited grief-specific preparation. Understanding these experiences could inform preparation for supporting grieving clients. Guided by Bandura’s self-efficacy theory, this qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological study explored these perceptions. The purposive sample included 10 CITs who were master’s-level students completing field experience or postgraduate counselors under clinical supervision, lacked independent licensure, attended or graduated from Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP)–accredited programs without required stand-alone grief coursework. None had a direct supervisory, instructional, or evaluative relationship with the researcher. The research question was: How did CITs perceive and make meaning of the role …

Access In Teaching Stem Subjects To The Blind, Ashley E. Neybert

Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities

There are still many gaps in the literature regarding the difficulties faced by instructors of students who are blind and low vision and who teach Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) subjects. We surveyed 26 K-12 STEM teachers about accessible materials they are aware of versus which accessible materials they use in their classrooms, their thoughts on how common challenges identified in the extent literature affect them in their teaching, and their perspective on how much extra time may be required for blind and low vision students (if any) to effectively learn STEM subjects.

Identifying Barriers To Reporting Concerning Behaviors In A Public Secondary School, Will Durgin Sep 2026

Identifying Barriers To Reporting Concerning Behaviors In A Public Secondary School, Will Durgin

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Threat assessment is an effective school safety practice that allows schools to identify concerning behavior and intervene before it reaches a crisis. Because this process often begins with a staff member recognizing and reporting a concern, this study examined how school staff interpret concerning behavior, understand their responsibility to report it, and what can make reporting more difficult.

The study used a two-phase action research design in a small, rural public school district in western New York. The first phase used a survey built around five behavior vignettes, while the second phase consisted of staff interviews.

Staff generally agreed when …

The Heterogeneous Impacts Of The Residential Component Of A Training Program: A Semi-Parametric Analysis, Jun Cai, Alfonso Flores-Lagunes, Xintong Wang Sep 2026

The Heterogeneous Impacts Of The Residential Component Of A Training Program: A Semi-Parametric Analysis, Jun Cai, Alfonso Flores-Lagunes, Xintong Wang

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

Several training programs worldwide are residential, bringing enrollees to live in facilities and thus increasing program costs. In the U.S., the Job Corps (JC) program for disadvantaged youth includes a residential component. Despite extensive literature evaluating JC, the impact of the residential component has received limited attention. We develop and employ a semi-parametric model to estimate the average causal effects of this residential component, accounting for selection into both the program and the residential feature. Our findings indicate that, for JC enrollees, the residential component boosts earnings, employment, and educational degree attainment among adolescents. For other subgroups, the residential component …

Listening To The Society Of Yeager Scholars: An Interpretive Companion For Institutional Memory And Strategic Reflection, Brian A. Hoey

Publications of the Honors College at Marshall University

Listening to the Society of Yeager Scholars is an interpretive companion for institutional memory and strategic reflection. Rather than offering a definitive history of the Society of Yeager Scholars or prescribing its future direction, the document reads the Society as an institution with a culture—one shaped over nearly four decades through educational purposes, relationships, traditions, expectations, and changing interpretations of what the Society is and should be.

Drawing on early oral histories, Alison Gerlach’s history of the Society’s first thirteen years, contemporary accounts, institutional records, strategic-planning materials, and sustained institutional experience, the document identifies recurring ways participants have understood the …

From Learning Outcomes To Assessment : Integrated Model For Assessing Creative Problem-Solving Skills In Higher Education Students, Metinee Tanongkit, Sirirat Janyarat, Tippawan Dechsong, Sarawut Trisri, Patcharee Preedasuriyachai

Journal of Education Studies

This academic article aims to present an integrated model for assessing creative problem-solving skills among higher education students, particularly in the contexts of general education courses and large classes. Creative problem-solving is a soft skill characterized by a process-oriented and multidimensional structure, involving understanding problems, generating ideas, making decisions, and developing solutions for action. Therefore, it cannot be comprehensively assessed through a single instrument or solely through end-point outcomes. The academic article proposed model functions as a mechanism for translating learning outcomes into assessment by connecting six components: defining the skill, identifying behavioral indicators, designing learning activities, specifying assessment evidence, …

“Whenever You Are Using Media, You Should Always Have A Purpose”: A Study Of Chinese Immigrant Mothers’ Media Practices, Xiaoning Gui, Daniel G. Krutka

Journal of Media Literacy Education Pre-Prints

This qualitative study explores how eleven Mandarin-speaking Chinese immigrant mothers of young children in a southwestern U.S. city navigate and mediate media in their households. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Findings show mothers balance media’s educational affordances with concerns about health and age-appropriate content, employing gatekeeping, time limits, and purposeful sharing. Mothers described children as learners, co-learners, and cultural connectors, sometimes reversing mediation by teaching mothers about U.S. media norms. Interpreted through a lens of Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy while also drawing on Confucian concepts, results underscore the need for early childhood educators to honor immigrant families’ practices while fostering …
