Sexual Misconduct And Interpersonal Violence Education: An Analysis Of The Athletic Department’S Influence On The Proactive Approaches Utilized To Address Title Ix Issues Among College Student-Athletes, Derrick D. Dixon
Student Theses and Dissertations
In 1972, collegiate and K-12 institutions were introduced to thirty-seven words that changed the face of women’s sports and sexual discrimination (Wulf, 2012). As outlined by the Office of Civil Rights (2017), Title IX is a federal law that states that “no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance” (Title IX of The Education Amendments of 1972). In addition to providing equality for athletes (high school and college), Title IX also …

A Phenomenological Approach To Understanding Residence Directors' Perceptions Of A Departure Of A Colleague, Mari Kathleen Duncan
A Phenomenological Approach To Understanding Residence Directors' Perceptions Of A Departure Of A Colleague, Mari Kathleen Duncan
Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive
Research on residence directors, as well as on turnover in higher education in general, is limited (Janosik et al., 2003). This qualitative phenomenological study focused on understanding residence directors’ perceptions of the departure of a colleague. The literature on residence directors has shortcomings in that it focuses mostly on recruitment and retention and fails to look at what happens to the staff left behind after a colleague moves on (Belch & Mueller, 2003; Belch, Wilson, & Dunkel, 2009; Davidson, 2012). Understanding the effect of employee turnover on the remaining residence life staff is important because those staff members play key …

The Integration Of Reading, Writing, Speaking, And Listening Skills In The Middle School Social Studies Classroom, Marianne Bristow Evans
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this feasibility study is to provide evidence of how integrating reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills into eighth-grade social studies instruction facilitates student understanding of content material and ability to write about social studies content. In this within-subjects paired-samples research study, 197 eighth-grade participants received instruction in a social studies content area and in argumentative writing. Data from a criterion-referenced social studies pre and posttest and data from pre and post instruction writing samples were analyzed to evaluate the influence of the integration of literacy tasks in middle school social studies classrooms on content area knowledge acquisition …

Music Educators Who Take The Lead: A Phenomenological Study Of School Leaders With Formal Backgrounds In Music And Experience As Music Educators, Jeanne M. Porcino Dolamore
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
This dissertation contributes to the scholarly conversation on the effects that leaders and leadership models have on educational organizations and how to cultivate a diverse pool of educational leaders within a complex educational landscape. The researcher developed a three-tiered conceptual framework related to: (a) the components of effective school leadership, (b) musicians and their capacity to lead, and (c) the developmental stages of teacher-to-leader transitions. Using an approach rooted in hermeneutic-interpretive phenomenology, the researcher led seven participants—each music educators who became educational administrators—through a series of semistructured interviews to reflect upon their lived experiences during their pathway to leadership, connecting …
9-1-1 Leadership: Perceptions Of Evidence-Based Quality Improvement, Steven C. Sharpe
9-1-1 Leadership: Perceptions Of Evidence-Based Quality Improvement, Steven C. Sharpe
Education Doctoral
The quality of 9-1-1 services can mean the difference between life and death. In 2015, national 9-1-1 organizations created a minimum standard for Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) comprehensive quality improvement programs, yet there is no mandate for PSAPs to adopt such standards. This study focuses on quality improvement perceptions among New York State (NYS) wireless PSAP leaders from an evidence-based management theory framework. The study addresses the primary research question: How do NYS wireless PSAP leaders support effective implementation of quality care? Using directed content analysis out-transcripts from focus group sessions with NYS wireless PSAP leaders, the following themes …
The Factors Influencing Interest, Processing, And Application Of Financial Literacy Education As Perceived By Students In An Urban College Setting, Stacy Crawford
Education Doctoral
The importance of financial literacy has been acknowledged and well received. However, measures to evaluate the effectiveness of financial literacy education have focused on program outcomes rather than participant interest to receive and process the information. The purpose of this transformative, phenomenological qualitative research study was to identify and examine the factors influencing the interest, processing, and application of financial literacy education programs as perceived by students in an urban, college setting. Using a theoretical framework based on the Kirkpatrick model for evaluating effectiveness of training programs and the Sen financial capability model, the study enabled the marginalized voices and …
Differences In The Dual Credit Experience Between High School And Institutions Of Higher Education, Micheala A. Steinmetz-Benton
Differences In The Dual Credit Experience Between High School And Institutions Of Higher Education, Micheala A. Steinmetz-Benton
Dissertations
Dual credit courses are college-level courses offered to high school students which are accepted for both high school and college credit (Hughes, 2016). Dual credit positively impacts students by reducing the time to complete a degree, enhancing the high school curriculum, increasing college accessibility, and lessening educational financial burdens (Hughes, 2016). The intention of this study was to survey adjunct instructors who have taught in both high school and college environments to determine their opinions of differences that exist between secondary and postsecondary dual credit experiences. College administrators were also interviewed to obtain insight into any variability of dual credit …
Leader Responses To Ambivalence During Ipe Organizational Transformation: A Phenomenological Study, Pam Youngs-Maher
Leader Responses To Ambivalence During Ipe Organizational Transformation: A Phenomenological Study, Pam Youngs-Maher
Education Doctoral
Executive leaders of higher education institutions that confer healthcare degrees are engaging in organizational transformations to meet the evolving needs of tomorrow’s healthcare professionals. Organizational transformations can trigger ambivalence at individual and collective levels. Researchers purport that ambivalence, a push/pull reaction, may play a functional role during decision making in the face of change. The purpose of this research was to examine what practices leaders, who felt ambivalent during organizational transformation, used to successfully lead change. Interprofessional education (IPE), where academic leaders are transforming healthcare education from silos to collaborative systems, was used as the context for study because of …

Faculty Publications
Departmental Action Teams (DATs) are departmentally-based working groups of faculty, students, and staffaimed at achieving sustained departmental change related to undergraduate education. DATs have been conceptualized and are facilitated by members of our project team based on a set of Core Principles. These principles serve both as guides in the design of DATs and targets for the kinds of culture we aspire to create through our facilitation. In this paper, we describe our Core Principles, including theoretical underpinnings and a brief implementation example for each. We argue that articulating principles is a critical component of externalizing acomplex change effort and …
The Perceived Effects Of Organizational Culture On Workplace Bullying In Higher Education, Laura Persky
The Perceived Effects Of Organizational Culture On Workplace Bullying In Higher Education, Laura Persky
Education Doctoral
Current research indicates that workplace bullying exists among a variety of industries in the United States. Further, the reported frequency of workplace bullying appears to be above average in some industries including higher education. Workplace bullying can cause long term harmful effects for the bullied target. Additionally, workplace bullying can create a negative work environment leading to decreased productivity and employee turnover. The purpose of this study was to learn from higher education faculty, administrators, and human resource personnel about their experiences with workplace bullying. This study examined the problem of workplace bullying through different roles and perspectives to better …
A Case Study Exploring Effective Leadership In Technology Integration In Three Southeastern U.S. Elementary Schools, Lauren Woodward
A Case Study Exploring Effective Leadership In Technology Integration In Three Southeastern U.S. Elementary Schools, Lauren Woodward
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore the characteristics of effective leadership in technology integration for school leaders and staff members in three southeastern, U.S. elementary schools. The theoretical framework that guided this study was based on Spillane’s (2005) distributed leadership model and Kouzes and Posner’s (2012) model of transformational leadership. These theories provided an understanding of leadership practices and characteristics that fostered an environment, which successfully supported the process of technology integration. The rationale for the study was that there is a gap in the literature that addresses effective leadership and practices for technology integration. …

Catalyzing Capacity: Absorptive, Adaptive, And Generative Leadership, Elizabeth A. Castillo, Mai P. Trinh
Management Faculty Publications
Purpose
Organizations increasingly operate under volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) conditions. Traditional command-and-control leadership can be ineffective in such chaotic environments. The purpose of this paper is to outline an alternative model to help leaders and organizations navigate effectively through VUCA environments. By developing three fundamental capacities (absorptive, adaptive and generative), leaders can cultivate organizations capable of continuous synchronization with their fitness landscapes. Central tenets of the framework include diversity, slack, learning, humility, reflection in action and abductive logic.
Design/methodology/approach
This framework is designed based on literature insights, conceptual analysis and experts’ judgment. The paper integrates knowledge from a …
Workplace Bullying Policies, Higher Education And The First Amendment: Building Bridges Not Walls, Frances L. M. Smith, Crystal Rae Coel
Workplace Bullying Policies, Higher Education And The First Amendment: Building Bridges Not Walls, Frances L. M. Smith, Crystal Rae Coel
Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that higher education institutions should change their Faculty Codes of Conduct to reflect workplace bullying as a form of unacceptable harassment. The article first provides a definition for workplace bullying; secondly, it offers an analysis of how the First Amendment is not an absolute, especially in the workplace; thirdly, it examines the scant legislative and judicial attention that is given to this issue; and finally, an argument is made to show how colleges and universities are not providing clear enough policies and procedures to address workplace bullying. That argument focuses on results …
Leadership From The Middle Pays It Forward: An Academic Administrator Of Color’S Career Development Narrative In Postsecondary Education, Cecil Dean Campbell
Leadership From The Middle Pays It Forward: An Academic Administrator Of Color’S Career Development Narrative In Postsecondary Education, Cecil Dean Campbell
The Qualitative Report
The ongoing underrepresentation of administrators of color in higher education suggests that traditional career pathways make racial equities in administrative leadership elusive. This personal narrative explores middle-manager educational and career experiences—some often-overlooked aspects of higher education administration. Using leadership and career development theories, I draw on qualitative approaches to examine my own career journey as one academic affairs administrator of color who has experienced a history of career change, lay-off, and non-traditional moves within and across diverse institutions. Through an inductive approach for analyzing data in my career narrative, emergent themes incorporate data references “calling,” citizenship, and cultural change in …

This dissertation determined the impact collective bargaining agreements had on the ability of high school principals to reduce educational disparities and close the achievement …
Experiences Of Grade Inflation At An Online University In The United States: An Autoethnography, David Blum
Experiences Of Grade Inflation At An Online University In The United States: An Autoethnography, David Blum
The Qualitative Report
Grade inflation is a problem at universities in the United States. To understand the cultural effect of grade inflation at a regionally accredited online university in the United States, I conducted autoethnographic research as a participant and observer. In this autoethnographic study, the purpose of my research was to explore my experiences being immersed in a grade inflation culture. I addressed a gap of autoethnographic research related to a culture of grade inflation existing at an online university in the United States. I provided seven themes serving as my discoveries related to my observations and participation as a faculty member. …

Embedding Diversity Into The Curriculum: Facilitating Challenging Conversations, Chimille E. Dillard
Dissertations
Wagner, Kegan, Lahey, Lemons, Garnier, Helsing, and Rasmussen’s (2006) four C’s, consisting of competency, conditions, culture, and context, were used to think systemically when looking at the current (As-Is) and projected (To-Be) in the Galaxy School district. This paper focused on the need to embed past and current racial and gender diversity issues into the everyday curriculum in an effort to have a positive impact on students’ social-emotional learning skills. The current curriculum has limited racial and no gender diversity. Students can go from Kindergarten to eighth grade being taught very little history and current events that are racially and …
Teacher Perceptions Of Mandated Collaboration Through Professional Learning Communities, Carmen Cranford Horton
Teacher Perceptions Of Mandated Collaboration Through Professional Learning Communities, Carmen Cranford Horton
Theses and Dissertations
Georgia Rule 505-2-.36, implemented in July of 2017, revised teacher recertification policy to include administrative evaluations of professional growth resulting from teachers’ engagement in professional learning communities (PLCs). The rule represented the convergence of two possibly conflicting ideals: mandated change and PLCs. Districts were permitted autonomy over how to implement and develop rubrics for the evaluation of professional growth resulting from PLCs. The purpose of this bounded case study was to capture the perceptions of teachers concerning the structure, purpose and dynamics of required PLC meetings during the initial year of implementation. The goal was to give voice to the …

Dissertations
This paper evaluated the Second Step program used by the Galaxy school district and many of the surrounding school districts in the area as the sole social and emotional learning program for elementary and middle/junior high school students. Research was conducted to discover whether or not the Second Step program addressed the social and emotional skills students need when encountering racial and gender-diverse issues in their everyday lives. Both quantitative and qualitative methods (such as surveys; interviews with teachers, social workers, and administrators; and classroom observations) were used when collecting data throughout the research. It was concluded that the Second …

Transitional Challenges For Students With Disabilities During A Period Of Systemic Imbalance, Cindy Clemson Ed.D., Ben Littlepage Ed.D.
Transitional Challenges For Students With Disabilities During A Period Of Systemic Imbalance, Cindy Clemson Ed.D., Ben Littlepage Ed.D.
Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
The present study explored how student support service administrators responded to the observed transitional challenges of students with disabilities during a period of systemic imbalance. Administrators at four community colleges in Tennessee, responsible for the coordination of student disability services, participated in a multi-site case study. Analysis revealed students with disabilities had unrealized expectations of postsecondary education, sought the same individualized attention experienced in secondary school, and misunderstood administrative processes, especially those associated with securing accommodations, upon entering college. Although the transitional challenges were not unique, increased enrollments and an inadequate infrastructure added difficulty to administrators’ ability to respond. Administrators …
Leadership And Spirituality: Conceptualization, Definition And Future Directions In Higher Education, Simone Elias, Brian Cole, Linda Wilson-Jones
Leadership And Spirituality: Conceptualization, Definition And Future Directions In Higher Education, Simone Elias, Brian Cole, Linda Wilson-Jones
Journal of Research Initiatives
This conceptual paper addresses the increased need to better conceptualize and define leadership and spirituality in higher education. Over the past decade, empirical research related to spirituality and leadership has gained momentum and has attracted interest from scholars, worldwide. With the increasing diversity of cultures and beliefs, particularly in western societies, the academia's acknowledgment of spirituality and leadership's importance not only present potentialities but also to reveal challenges; since some researchers support a religion-based perspective of the concept, while others indicate that the concept goes beyond religiosity. Therefore, this systematic literature attempts to reconcile diverse viewpoints into a more cohesive …
Leading And Learning: Principal And Instructional Leadership Team Implementation Of A District Multi-Tiered System Of Support Initiative, Jennifer Rinck
Leading And Learning: Principal And Instructional Leadership Team Implementation Of A District Multi-Tiered System Of Support Initiative, Jennifer Rinck
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There are gaps in the literature between implementation research and organizational learning describing how local school systems successfully implement initiatives that change practices within school sites. Until recently, there has been a pattern for federal and state policies to overlook the role of the local school district in impacting school reform efforts (Honig & Copland, 2008; Knapp, 2008). With the importance of the school district gaining attention from researchers and policy makers, research on various aspects of district based reform efforts is expanding (Knapp, 2008). However, there is limited research on the influence of district reform strategies and the transfer …

Dual Immersion Leadership: A Case Study Of Three K-5 Principals Who Show Success With Emergent Bilinguals, Ivonne Karina Dibblee
Dissertations and Theses
In the past decade the number of dual language immersion programs in US public schools has grown to more than 2000. The benefits of dual language immersion for emergent bilinguals (EBs) have been confirmed by numerous studies. However, lacking from this literature is research which focuses on leadership within dual immersion schools. Despite an upsurge in the number of immersion schools, few studies examine the characteristics of effective immersion leaders. The aim of this study is to examine the leadership characteristics of principals leading K-5 dual language immersion programs who have increased student achievement among EBs.
The purpose of this …
Examining Messenger And Mode: Strategic Communication In Higher Education Recruitment, Valerie Breashears
Examining Messenger And Mode: Strategic Communication In Higher Education Recruitment, Valerie Breashears
Theses and Dissertations
The marketing mantra “know your audience” can be applied when examining higher education student recruitment. With endless avenues for communication and a rise in national data on this topic, exploring what works best for individual institutions is crucial. Disparaging data exists concerning how admissions administrators believe students prefer to hear from institutions and the realities of student preferences. When new recruitment communication strategies were implemented at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in fall 2015 it required an assessment of effectiveness. The posttest-only two-group randomized experimental design will be employed for this proposed quantitative study analyzing recruitment cycle progression …
