G80-495 Managing Two-Year-Old Beef Heifers (Calving - Rebreeding), Gene H. Deutscher
G80-495 Managing Two-Year-Old Beef Heifers (Calving - Rebreeding), Gene H. Deutscher
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses the nutrition and management practices recommended for beef heifers during precalving, calving, and early lactation periods. Proper development of replacement heifers has a great influence on the success of calving and rebreeding them as two-year-olds. NebGuide G80-493, Developing Replacement Beef Heifers (Weaning-Breeding), points out that proper selection, adequate nutrition, and judgment in sire selection are all important management factors for developing heifers into high producing cows. With good management before breeding, a high percentage of heifers should be bred early in a short breeding season. Heifers should be pregnancy checked and the open ones culled. Thereafter, the …

G80-489 Feeding The Beef Cow Herd--Part I Factors Affecting The Cow Nutrition Program, Richard J. Rasby, Ivan G. Rush
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Considerations for getting the most from your beef cow herd are covered in this NebGuide, including calving season, factors affecting nutrient requirements, cow rations and more.
Feed costs are the greatest expense in keeping a cow herd, and the nutrition program dictates reproductive performance. The ultimate goal for a cow/calf manager is to keep feed costs low, but still meet the nutrient requirements of the cow herd so reproductive performance is not impaired. Once these two factors are balanced, producers, through new genetics of added growth or milk production, can match increased weaning weight with the most economical feed resources …
G80-537 Reproductive Trace Anatomy And Physiology Of The Cow, Gene H. Deutscher
G80-537 Reproductive Trace Anatomy And Physiology Of The Cow, Gene H. Deutscher
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Knowledge of basic reproduction will help a producer to obtain higher conception rates when using estrous synchronization and/or artificial insemination. The reproductive performance of a cow herd has a great influence on the income and profit realized. A good understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the cow's reproductive system is, therefore, beneficial for successful management. Knowledge of basic reproduction will help a producer to obtain higher conception rates when using estrous synchronization and/or artificial insemination. It will also allow for a better understanding of pregnancy examinations, reproductive diseases and calving difficulty problems.

Need For Greater Concern For Nutrition In Science Programs, Robert E. Yager
Need For Greater Concern For Nutrition In Science Programs, Robert E. Yager
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Effective teaching of basic nutrition is a major deficiency in the schools of our nation. Although nutrition is one of approximately a dozen central themes generally recognized as comprising biology, it is an area which tended to be de-emphasized during the 1960's and early 70's. Nutrition was usually too applied in nature to be a major focus within the NSF curricula which were organized around the conceptual themes which characterize and unify the various disciplines of science. One of the first changes in the development of the so-called "new courses" of the 1960's was the elimination of any applications of …

G80-518 Factors In Marketing Corn, W. Duane Foote
G80-518 Factors In Marketing Corn, W. Duane Foote
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses grain standards for corn and how they effect the value of corn.
Grading standards have been established for corn, wheat, barley, oats, rye, sorghum, flax seed, soybeans, triticale, and mixed grain. Grade requirements are designed to describe grain and provide the foundation for pricing. Within a defined range, grain standards inform buyers and sellers about the general characteristics of the grain being graded. Thus, a uniform system of grading is essential for the orderly marketing of grain.
Fundamental Criteria For Determining The Educational Value Of Live Animal Experimentation In High School Science Fairs, David H. Neil
Fundamental Criteria For Determining The Educational Value Of Live Animal Experimentation In High School Science Fairs, David H. Neil
Education Collection
The author contends that great and very detailed attention to one minuscule facet of experimental animal biology, particularly if it requires the skilled and uniform alteration of a significant number of animals, is of no real educational value to a high school student. This type of work, the necessity for it and the full understanding of its significance to the furtherance of human understanding must be the province only of those who are intellectually prepared. The suggestion is made that projects, which develop a more complete understanding of common and profoundly important elements in life (as we know it), should …

The Relationship Between Self-Concept And Locus Of Control And Patterns Of Eating, Exercise, And Social Participation In Older Adults, Alice G. Bonds
The Relationship Between Self-Concept And Locus Of Control And Patterns Of Eating, Exercise, And Social Participation In Older Adults, Alice G. Bonds
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Social scientists are increasingly engaged in trying to understand who among older adults may be vulnerable to the stresses which often accompany aging. One approach is to try to discover how behavior may suggest that psychological coping capacities are beginning to be threatened. This investigation was designed to extend knowledge of the relationships between two personality constructs, self-concept and locus of control, and three aspects of everyday behavior in older adults. The study question was: is there a relationship between self-concept and locus of control and patterns of eating, exercise, and social participation in older adults living in the community. …
An Educational Philosophy For American Medical School Curricula, Richard Bruce Donker
An Educational Philosophy For American Medical School Curricula, Richard Bruce Donker
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
American medicine has undergone dramatic changes in the past two decades. The launching of Sputnik I by the Russians in 1957 led the United States government to place an extraordinary emphasis upon science and technology that has been responsible for a staggering array of technological and knowledge breakthrough in medicine. Social changes have created stresses that have resulted in a high percentage of emotional and psychological illnesses. As a result of the impersonal nature of modern technological medicine and the need for emotional and psychological guidance, the American public has turned recently toward alternate methods of healing. Many of these …

Masters Theses
Statement Of The Problem
There were two sets of problems which were of focal interest: (1) Did the achievement levels of the students selected come up a significant degree? (The administration wished a month's gain for a month's instruction.) (2) Did the children's personality and behavior characteristics change for the better?
Procedure
The design used was a one-group pretest-posttest design. Achievement, behavior, and personality traits were measured on the original sixteen children and in remaining ten who were still in the classes after two years.
Conclusions
As stated previously, the primary purposes of this descriptive research study were: (1) Did …
