Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
Millions of dollars are spent annually on special educational programs for children whose severe behavior disorders prevent them from participating in the regular school setting despite average or above average intellectual capacity. A growing body of research indicates that some of these behavior disorders are related to nutritional problems. (Pfeiffer and Iliev 1972; Kittler 1973; Mayron 1979; and Buckley 1977), and many clinicians support the view that no matter what the etiology of behavioral disorders, nutritional programs can improve the baseline data on medical, social and intellectual achievement, and on personality measures (Palmer 1978). Our purpose here is to present …

Single Cell Protein: The Future Food, D. O. Hitzman
Single Cell Protein: The Future Food, D. O. Hitzman
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The population of the world is now over 4 billion, with approximately two-thirds of this population being in regions characterized as being underdeveloped. Today there are 200,000 more people than there were yesterday, with about 10,000 persons estimated as dying each week from lack of food. By the year 2000, it is estimated that 6 to 7 billion persons will live in the world. Current global surveys measuring food supply per person indicate severe undernutrition (too few calories) and an unbalanced diet (too little protein). The most critical single shortage in the world food supply is protein, vital to the …

"I Did It!": Sewing With Young Children, Carole Harmon
Graduate Student Independent Studies
This paper looks at sewing in a Montessori-based Open Classroom of twenty to twenty-four young children ages three to six. It is an attempt to at least partially answer the question: "What makes a good classroom work?" or "What are the elements that underlie the complex interplay of child, teacher and prepared environment that enables children to grow in a particular learning place?"
Brain Growth: Intuitive And Scientific, Karen Marie Patterson
Brain Growth: Intuitive And Scientific, Karen Marie Patterson
Graduate Research Papers
Developmental processes of the brain have long been considered the last frontier by scientists as well as educators. There has been much speculation concerning how and when the mind grows and if intellectual growth appears at the same time the skull and brain are physiologically and neurologically growing. Prior to recent research many educators assumed that learning, or intellectual advancement, occurred in an almost continuous manner. Educators felt children built skill upon skill and constantly moved from one stage of cognitive development to the next higher level of cognitive development. Traditionally, educational systems have been based on this concept of …

Beyond Individualism In The Arts, Peter London
Beyond Individualism In The Arts, Peter London
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
I propose that there is a direct correlation between the precarious state of our cultural pattern and the role that artists and art educators assume in our society. I hope to demonstrate that the near fatal deficit of our culture is its undue esteem of individualism over the community--of private gain over the public good, and that the artist and art teacher reflect these same social values. I wish to demonstrate that artist need not assume the role of estranged other and fierce individualist in order to exercise their powers of imagination and craft, but may put these resources toward …
Planning A Seminar On Aging To Disseminate Information To Personnel Working With The Aged, Oscar Raymond Gain Jr.
Planning A Seminar On Aging To Disseminate Information To Personnel Working With The Aged, Oscar Raymond Gain Jr.
Theses
The project consisted of planning and organizing a seminar for dissemination of information to persons working with the aged. From my ten years of experience in the health care profession, six of them were working with the aged population . I was surprised at my lack of knowledge about the older person. After attending the course as Lindenwood College my knowledge expanded from the biological to the social and psychological aspect of aging.
I decided to organize a seminar for local health personnel working with the aged in a thirty-mile radius of my residence. There were a total of six …

G82-603 Eggplant, Dale T. Lindgren
G82-603 Eggplant, Dale T. Lindgren
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
How to grow eggplants from transplants and seeds. Includes varietal descriptions, cultural practices, harvesting tips, and possible disease and insect problems.
The eggplant belongs to the Solanaceae or nightshade family, which includes the sweet pepper, tomato and potato. The ornamentals petunia and Jerusalem cherry, and other plants such as tobacco and horse nettle, are also members of this family.
Eggplant was so named because the first varieties introduced to English-speaking people had egg-shaped fruits. Its scientific name is Solanum melongena var. esculentum.
