Nitrate-rich beetroot juice may have more pronounced ergogenic effects on exercise that requires high-power and high-velocity muscle contraction; however, the efficacy of, and the optimal dosing for nitrate to enhance resistance exercise performance is unknown. PURPOSE: To assess whether nitrate elicits dose-dependent ergogenic effects during a battery of resistance exercises in resistance-trained men. METHODS: Eighteen resistance-trained men were assigned in a randomized, double-blind, crossover design to consume 280 ml nitrate-depleted beetroot juice (PL; negligible nitrate), 70 ml nitrate-rich beetroot juice and 210 ml nitrate-depleted beetroot juice (BR-LOW; ~6.5 mmol nitrate), 140 ml nitrate-rich beetroot juice and 140ml nitrate-depleted …

Tarnopolsky et al. (1990) showed significantly higher fat oxidation (FOx) in women versus men during endurance exercise, likely due to their higher concentrations of estrogen and type I muscle fibers. Prior studies support this stance (Venables et al. 2000), yet Wallis et al. (2006) showed no effect of sex on the metabolic response to exercise. PURPOSE: To compare substrate metabolism between men and women during submaximal exercise prescribed using metabolic (percent ventilatory threshold, %VT) and relative (percent maximal heart rate, %HRmax) intensities. METHODS: Healthy, non-obese men (n = 23) and women (n = 13) (age, % fat, and VO2 …

Input Of Sex Data Does Not Affect Metabolic Variables Returned From The Cosmed K5 Unit During Exercise, Olivia R. Perez, Michael W.H Wong, Dustin W. Davis, James W. Navalta
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
There is a sex-data gap in sport and exercise, which results in an underrepresentation of female participants and increases the possibility of misgendering individuals who identify other than the female-male binary. A potential barrier to gender inclusivity could be that common exercise science equipment and software are limited to binary options for sex, excluding people who identify as gender minorities. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether sex data input into the COSMED K5 had a direct effect on metabolic outcome variables. METHODS: Seven adult participants (age = 29.6 ± 10.8 years, height = 172.6 ± 8.5 …

Infiltration Of Immune Cells And Lipid Nanoparticle-Mediated Drug Delivery In A Skin Cancer Model, Aynur Sanem Yilmaz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is notorious for its rapid mutation rate and high potential for metastasis, making effective treatment particularly challenging. Immunotherapy has emerged as a significant advancement in melanoma therapy, leveraging the immune system to target and eliminate cancer cells. These achievements have motivated further investigation into immune system-based strategies for this aggressive cancer. Cell-based drug delivery has been primarily achieved by either using immune cells as direct carriers for therapeutics or by employing active molecules through drug delivery systems, most often nanoparticles. While immune cells exhibit innate tumor-homing abilities, they face challenges such as limited …

How Can Nature-Based Early Childhood Learning Environments Support Whole Child Development?, Greta Miller
How Can Nature-Based Early Childhood Learning Environments Support Whole Child Development?, Greta Miller
Graduate Teacher Education
Learning experiences and environments have a profound influence on young children’s learning and development (National Association for the Education of Young Children, 2022; Zosh et al., 2022). When young children are afforded inadequate opportunities to engage with and explore a nature-based outdoor learning environment, children’s growth, learning, and development can be negatively impacted (Louv, 2008; Suttie, 2016). Current research and literature regarding how nature-based early learning environments support whole child development was analyzed. Research indicated that when children spent more time exploring nature, children had improved learning outcomes (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2022). Outdoor play promoted creativity, curiosity, and critical …
What Could School Accountability Look Like In A Post-Covid World?, Joel A. Leader
What Could School Accountability Look Like In A Post-Covid World?, Joel A. Leader
School Leadership Review
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted traditional school accountability systems, particularly those reliant on standardized testing. This study investigates how three Texas school districts responded to pandemic-related needs and adapted their locally developed Community-Based Accountability Systems (CBAS) to maintain accountability in the absence of standardized test data. Drawing on seven semi-structured interviews with district leaders, the study explores how educational leaders identified and addressed the emerging needs of their communities, such as mental health, technology access, and social-emotional support. The findings demonstrate that districts leveraging CBAS before the pandemic were better positioned to meet these challenges, providing more comprehensive accountability that extended …

Student Loan Policies And Payments During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Closing The Gap Or Widening Inequalities?, Jason Jabbari, Takeshi Terada, Haotian Zheng, Stephen Roll
Journal of Student Financial Aid
Student debt was specifically addressed in the federal government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic through forbearance polices. However, not all individuals were eligible for forbearance, and it is possible that forbearance would leave some feeling further behind. Yet, little is known about student loan debt over the course of the pandemic, especially in relationship to forbearance policies, loan payments, and household financial stability. Leveraging a representative longitudinal survey of households during the pandemic, we use descriptive regression techniques to explore changes in loan balances throughout the pandemic, as well as the relationships among student loan policies, payments, and measures of …

Prolonged sitting is associated with higher health issues across all age groups, particularly affecting students’ classroom behaviors and academic achievement. In this paper, we review the psychological research on the relationship between posture and cognition, focusing on how students learn while sitting versus standing. Our findings show that there is no clear evidence favoring one posture over another in terms of cognitive outcomes. Meanwhile, studies highlight the health and physiological benefits of standing desks. Dynamic postural configurations can encourage movement and support collaboration among students and between students and teachers. Introducing standing desks to the K-12 classrooms could reduce health …
