An Eclectic Approach To Individualized Reading In The First Grade, Sandra S. Scherer
An Eclectic Approach To Individualized Reading In The First Grade, Sandra S. Scherer
All Master's Theses
Past experience has revealed a definite need to release children, at least partially, from the traditional ability groupings and allow more flexible groupings. The past also revealed that individual children's unique interests and abilities were not being provided for. Since the teaching of reading occupies a central position in the elementary grades, and since children have a wide range of reading abilities and interests, an investigation of individualized reading was prompted.

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Among college students from culturally deprived backgrounds the problem of communicating ideas in writing is indeed a real one. It hampers their progress in most of their academic courses and, in numerous cases, forces them to give up their goal of becoming college graduates—a decision which jeopardizes their chances of achieving their maximum potential.

The Limits Of The Scientist's Responsibility To Communicate With Laymen, James M. Lufkin
The Limits Of The Scientist's Responsibility To Communicate With Laymen, James M. Lufkin
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
The scientist's responsibility to communicate with the layman is limited first by the layman's ability to understand him, and second by the layman's "need to know." These are very real limits, and in fairness, they should always be considered carefully in any assessment of the scientist's social responsibility.

"Intensive Phonics vs. Gradual Phonics in Beginning Reading: A Review" which appeared in the April 1965 issue of The Journal of Educational Research? This review presents 22 comparisons between intensive phonics instruction and gradual phonics instruction. It differs from standard reviews in two respects. First, it restricts itself to comparisons meeting certain rigorous statistical criteria and gives specific reasons for excluding various less rigorous studies. Second, instead of quoting the conclusions of various investigators, it tabulates their findings in terms of significant differences. The reviewers found that 19 comparisons favored intensive phonics, three favored neither method, and none favored gradual …

A Study Of School Programs For The Culturally Deprived Child, Mary King Cox
All Master's Theses
The purposes of this study are (1) to study descriptive information about school programs for culturally deprived children in both large and small cities in order to identify the broad range of procedures being employed to educate these disadvantaged children, and (2) to identify those program elements which might be most useful in planning for the needs of these children in other districts such as Pasco, Washington.
