Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The first-year shorthand class of Woodway Senior High School was given the test instrument, The Turse Shorthand Aptitude Test, to determine whether achievement in shorthand could be predicted by the percentile rank achieved on The Turse Aptitude Test. Comparison was made of the shorthand grades; SCAT-Total, and Grade Point Averages. The only significant correlation found was between first semester grades of first-year shorthand and the overall grade point average which was significant at the .03 level. The Effects Of A Short Term Preacademic Total Approach Program On The Language Development Of Disadvantaged Children, Doug Richter

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This research tests a short term total academic language development program on the development of language delayed children. It was hypothesized that an increase in vocabulary and response length after a six week treatment program would be reflected on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and the Mean Length of Response Test. The treatment program utilized both the group and tutorial approach emphasizing the basic skills associated with listening, language, reading, writing and arithmetic. The subjects were nine-preschool Head Start children participating in a summer program at Western Kentucky University. A comparison of the performance on pre and post test revealed …

Evidence For The Existence And Acquisition Of An Aspect Of Communicative Competence: Recognition Of Sex Of Speaker From Linguistic Cues--Or--Knowing How To Talk Like A Lady, Carole Edelsky

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

This is a study of the acquisition by children of one aspect of communicative competence, the ability to decide that certain kinds of language are more appropriate to speakers of one sex than the other. It was first established that adults had such competence, and then shown how children came to approximate it. The study used as subjects 122 white, native English speaking adults and 122 children in first, third, and sixth grades, from a middle class Albuquerque neighborhood. All were presented with a written instrument on which they chose the likely sex of the speaker of sentences containing the …

At the present time we are all dissatisfied with intelligence testing. And we have been so, more or less, for the past twenty years. Tests have been criticized by researchers involved in experimental studies of intelligence, by administrators concerned with the applications of intelligence tests, and most importantly, by the users of these tests. So you may well ask 'Why haven't test constructors done -something about these criticisms?' And of course there is no really crushing retort to this. However the problem that has faced, and still faces, people trying to construct intelligence tests is the very diversity of the …

A Study Of The Effect Of Youth Tutoring Upon Attitude & Achievement Of Tutors & Tutees, Sarah Harrison

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The general problem to which this study was directed was the effect upon attitude and achievement of eighth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students, some of whom were underachievers themselves, tutoring other underachieving elementary school students.

In order to analyze this general problem, answers were sought to the following questions:

  1. Will the tutors demonstrate greater improvement than pupils in the control group in specific attitudinal and achievement areas?
  2. Will the tutors demonstrate greater improvement than the tutees in specific attitudinal and achievement areas?
  3. Will the tutors who are underachieving at the outset of the program demonstrate greater improvement than the tutors …

Teaching Reading: The Science And The Art, John C. Manning Jul 1974

Teaching Reading: The Science And The Art, John C. Manning

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

For some time I have been thinking of this august occasion and of its topic, Teaching Reading: The Science and the Art. And at a recent convention while listening to a brilliant monologist and teacher, I there wished that I could have changed the title of my speech to "Look, look. Come, come. See Charlotte's Web." I think that title brings the concepts of teaching reading as a science and an art to the realities of classrooms, some very human teachers, and some little children who may very well need to appreciate and recognize the simplicity of "look, look" before …

Electives And Undergraduate Social Work Education In A State University, H. Wayne Johnson Jul 1974

Electives And Undergraduate Social Work Education In A State University, H. Wayne Johnson

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

From the beginning of its interest in undergraduate instruction, the Council on Social Work Education has stressed the importance of a broad liberal education for baccalaureate social workers . Such emphasis was restated twice in subsequent CSWE documents, and more recently in other materials which enunciate the standards for the new undergraduate accreditation process commencing in 1974. It is much easier to state the notion of a general education than it is to describe its content and character and there is a tendency to become ambiguous. We are prone to resort to a high level of generalization in characterizing a …

A Comparison Of Extant Articulated English Programs With Current Articulated English Program At Bonneville High School, Utah, Wilford M. Hale

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Throughout the decade of the sixties, teachers, administrators, curriculum writers and text book companies have all made vigorous attempts to redefine the teaching of English. Teachers have organized themselves on local, state, and national levels to concentrate their efforts and share their knowledge. In part they have been responsible for some of the current trends: better preparation of teachers, experimentation with new methods in the classroom, and more consistent evaluation of what is taking place in the classroom-what teachers teach and what students learn.
