Instructional Practices Which Contribute To Sight Vocabulary Deficits, Carl Braun Jul 1976

Instructional Practices Which Contribute To Sight Vocabulary Deficits, Carl Braun

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In examining clinical reading records, one is struck with a number of learners whose problems relate in some way to a sight vocabulary deficit. The gravity of this can only be fully apprehended when one recognizes that a child with a sight vocabulary problem is not "just another reading problem." His is a limiting problem-a problem, which if uncorrected, stands the strong risk not only of crippling his total reading growth but, indeed, crippling his self-concept as a learner.

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This descriptive study was undertaken in order to provide the communities and educational organizations in the Lower Rio Grande Valley with a profile of the philosophical, organizational and curricular structure of reading programs in the school districts of the area. Six school systems were selected as representative of the Lower Rio Grande Valley, and were chosen on the basis of population, school enrollment and geographical location.

A questionnaire was prepared to insure continuity of the collected data and to serve as a basis for conducting interviews with appropriate administrative personnel. The data collected revealed that while school systems of the …

Preliminary Studies In The Acquisition Of Portuguese Morphology By Brazilian Children, ZéLia D. Mediano May 1976

Preliminary Studies In The Acquisition Of Portuguese Morphology By Brazilian Children, ZéLia D. Mediano

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The first major purpose of this study was to find out how Brazilian children internalize some Portuguese morphological rules. The second major objective was to compare the findings with findings from other languages and with universals in the acquisition of morphology.

A research instrument was constructed to measure the productive aspects of substantive plurals, regular and irregular verb inflections, diminutives and augmentatives, and compound words. Real and nonsense words were used.

The population consisted of middle-class children attending private schools in the city of Rio de Janeiro. A sample of 210 children was randomly selected: 30 in each age group …

Some Semantics Of Basic Word Lists, Patrick Groff Apr 1976

Some Semantics Of Basic Word Lists, Patrick Groff

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Lists of words compiled on the basis of their frequency of occurrence in writings of various kinds have long been considered "basic" materials for reading instruction. It is said teachers should use such lists because the child best learns to read if the order of the words presented to him for this purpose is governed by the relative frequency words occur in written materials. Put another way, it is argued that if word A occurs more often in written matter of different types than does word B it then should be presented for a child to learn to read before …

Some Reasons For Oral Reading, R. Baird Shuman Apr 1976

Some Reasons For Oral Reading, R. Baird Shuman

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Few would question the appropriateness of oral reading in the first and second grades. Most experts feel that reading aloud is a worthwhile activity in the earliest years of school because the students have not yet developed sufficient speed in silent reading to make silent reading a valuable enterprise for them. Lewis and Sisko (1963) caution, however, that "from the time a child's silent reading rate overtakes his rate of oral reading, usually during the second or third grade, too much oral reading has the adverse effect of slowing down the rate of silent reading and encouraging unnecessary lip movement, …

The Development Of A Model For Identifying, Diagnosing And Correcting Dyslexic Problems In Third Grade Nigerian, Catherine Maffiong Essien Feb 1976

The Development Of A Model For Identifying, Diagnosing And Correcting Dyslexic Problems In Third Grade Nigerian, Catherine Maffiong Essien

Dissertations and Theses

The Nigerian educational system is humanistic, nationally centered and open to all cultural, ethnic and tribal influences. The policy of Nigeria is to realize mass and practical education. However, the present system is highly selective and academically oriented. This study is done while education in Nigeria is in a period of revolution. Radical changes have been taken to keep up the national demand for progress and power.

Dyslexia, one of the leading causes of reading difficulties, is a term still unknown to some educators in Nigerian schools. This stems mainly from the fact that Nigerian public schools lack sufficient personnels …
