Development Of Formal Hypothesis-Testing Ability, David Moshman Jan 1979

Development Of Formal Hypothesis-Testing Ability, David Moshman

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

It was postulated that formal operational hypothesis-testing ability includes at least three cognitive capacities: (a) implication comprehension, the ability to understand conditional relationships; (b) falsification strategy, the realization that to test a hypothesis, one must seek information that would falsify it; and(c) nonverification insight, the realization that hypotheses are not conclusively verified by supporting data. A total of 24 males in each of Grades 7, 10, and college evaluated data descriptions with respect to each of four hypothesized implication relationships and chose an experiment to test each hypothesis. Results suggested three sequences of qualitative change in hypothesis-testing ability: (a) from …

Epistemic Authority, Rationality And The Fallacy Of Educational Democracy, John H. Chambers Jan 1979

Epistemic Authority, Rationality And The Fallacy Of Educational Democracy, John H. Chambers

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

In any rational authority system, authority must be closely connected to point, purpose and function. The situation of authority in colleges and universities provides a special case of such point, purpose and function. The present paper tries to show the quite special features of the epistemic (knowledge) authority of academics that provide rational justification for their being in many positions of social authority in their institutions. To do this, (1) the particular aspects of the point, purpose and function of such epistemic authorities will be demonstrated, (2) the logical necessity of academic disciplines for rational endeavour will be pointed out, …

The Role Of Language In The Assimilation Of Lebanese Immigrants In Australia., A. W. Ata Jan 1979

The Role Of Language In The Assimilation Of Lebanese Immigrants In Australia., A. W. Ata

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Most research surveys in recent years have revealed that problems of language permeate every aspect of life of migrant communities. Migrants who have attained a reasonable command of English are likely to be better adjusted and therefore more easily accepted by the host society and less vulnerable to exploitation than are other members of their community; circumstances which obviously make for easier assimilation. A methodological study was set up to investigate degrees in acquiring the varying standards of knowledge of English among Lebanese migrants, attempts made to learn English after immigration, the language spoken at home, the insistence of parents …

The Effects Of Language Variables On The Reading Comprehension Of Hearing-Impaired Children, Nancy L. Robbins Jan 1979

The Effects Of Language Variables On The Reading Comprehension Of Hearing-Impaired Children, Nancy L. Robbins

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Hearing-impaired children rarely learn to read well. They suffer no apparent deficit in perceptual skill or basic intelligence. Their difficulty appears to be linguistic in origin. But research on the reading ability of the deaf is inadequate to specify the precise nature of their linguistic disability.

The deaf lack knowledge of English phonology. Current reading instruction programs for them a.re based on the assumption that this is the cause of their reading problems. Recent research indicates, however, that phoneme-grapheme correspondences contribute little to the reading process and that phonics instruction may actually impede learning to read. It is unlikely that …

The Relationship Of Language Orientation And Racial/Ethnic Attitude Among Chinese-American Primary Grade Children, Irene Sui-Ling Kwok Jan 1979

The Relationship Of Language Orientation And Racial/Ethnic Attitude Among Chinese-American Primary Grade Children, Irene Sui-Ling Kwok

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study to determine whether there was a relationship between the language orientation of Chinese-American primary-grade children in the San Francisco Unified School District and their racial/ethnic attitude. Generally, Chinese-Americans are monolingual Chinese speakers (MCS), monolingual English speakers (BECS). These three linguistic groups of Chineses-American children were compared in this study to determine the existence of a language orientation-racial/ethnic attitude relationship. A review of the literature shows that 1) language, thought, and perception are interrelated, 2) racial attitudes are significant factors in American society, 3) attitudes and behavior are interrelated, and 4) children develop racial/ethnic attitudes at an early age. …

Reaction To Social Pressure From Adults Versus Peers Among Mexican, Mexican-American, And Anglo-American Rural Children, Ana Maria C. Donini

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this project was to investigate whether there was a significant difference in the adherence to conventional morality and the reaction to social pressure from adults versus peers among Mexican, Mexican-American, and Anglo-American children. The instrument used was the Moral Dilemmas Test (MDT) developed by Bronfenbrenner, Devereux, Suci, and Rodgers, which measures the reported readiness of children to engage in morally disapproved behavior and their reaction to social pressure exerted by adults and peers. The subjects were asked to respond to a series of conflict situations under three experimental conditions of confidentiality, scrutiny by parents, and scrutiny by …

Prediction Of Reading Achievement Using Conservation Performance, Jann Moser Bowlus Jan 1979

Prediction Of Reading Achievement Using Conservation Performance, Jann Moser Bowlus

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study examined the relationship between reading and Piagetian conservation ability. It was hypothesized that conservation ability would be significantly related to reading achievement and an addition of a conservation measure to a reading readiness measure would significantly improve prediction of reading achievement.

Forty first and second grade children from a northeast Iowa, middle class, urban school district were involved in this study. They were administered conservation tasks from the Concept Assessment Kit-Conservation during the fall of 1977. In the spring of 1978 Ginn reading mastery scores were obtained and Clymer-Barrett reading readiness test scores were gathered from the school …

A Boost For The "Basics" Through Children's Literature, Carl Braun Oct 1978

A Boost For The "Basics" Through Children's Literature, Carl Braun

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The most persistent hazard in skills emphasis is that we become so busy teaching them that we forget about the important goal- to develop readers and writers. I know children who can perform skills in isolation to 80 percent proficiency, 95 percent proficiency, yes, even 100 percent proficiency. But, they can't read where it counts-in the real world of books. What is even more distressing is that some of them don't even want to enter this real world because they have never had a taste.
