Testing Communicative Competence: A New Approach Based On Discourse Analysis, Margaret B. Silver
Testing Communicative Competence: A New Approach Based On Discourse Analysis, Margaret B. Silver
Theses
This thesis proposes a new method for assessing communicative competence among ESL learners by using discourse analysis as the foundation for a placement test. Margaret B. Silver critiques conventional evaluation tools—such as the Ilyin Oral Interview, the STEL grammar test, and cloze procedures—arguing that they fail to measure the full range of linguistic and sociolinguistic abilities necessary for real-world communication. These traditional assessments, while helpful in measuring grammatical knowledge, overlook important features such as pronunciation, intonation, kinesics, and the ability to convey meaning in context.
Silver’s approach draws on discourse analysis to evaluate how students actually use language in unscripted …
Story Structure And Age Effects On Children's Ability To Sequence Stories, E. Mcclure, J. Mason, J. Barnitz
Story Structure And Age Effects On Children's Ability To Sequence Stories, E. Mcclure, J. Mason, J. Barnitz
Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications
To investigate the strategies children use in comprehending written stories, third, sixth, and ninth grade students were given scrambled six-sentence stories and asked to reorder them. Three versions of each of six stories were created. The first version was the canonical form of the story predicted by story grammar rules; the second version began with a sentence which questioned the conclusion of the canonical form; and in the third this conclusion began the story. Significant effects of grade and structure indicated that the canonical form was more easily ordered than were the other structures, and also that third grade students …

Implications From Psycholinguistics For Secondary Reading, W. John Harker
Implications From Psycholinguistics For Secondary Reading, W. John Harker
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Over the past decade, increasing interest has been shown in the implications of psycholinguistics for understanding the reading process. Mainly through the work of Goodman (1969; 1970) and Smith (1971; 1975), linguistic and psychological knowledge have been combined to describe the reading process of mature readers and the process through which children learn to read. The educational implications of this psycholinguistic model have been largely concerned with the learning-to-read process of elementary school children. But significant implications for secondary developmental reading instruction arc suggested as well. It is the purpose of this paper to identify and explore some of these …

Beginning Reading Without Readiness: Structured Language Experience, Patricia Cunningham
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The language experience approach has for generations been one of the tricks in the bags of versatile reading teachers. Allen (1964) emphasizes the link between speaking. writing and reading inherent in the language experience approach. Hall (1972) supplies seven statements supporting the linguistic soundness of the language experience approach.

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
William S. Palmer is Professor of Reading and Language Arts at the University of NC?rth Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is well known for his contributions to professional journals in the field of reading and English education. He is author of Teaching Reading to High School Students.
In his contribution to this column, Professor Palmer points out some of the oversimplication which results from basing reading programs upon the taxonomic model. He carefully explores the stages of beginning reading, and he sets these in a useful historical perspective. In doing so, he avoids the Aristotelian either/or dichotomy in his …

Reading Comprehension Of Pronoun-Referent Structures By Children In Grades Two, Four, And Six., J G. Barnitz
Reading Comprehension Of Pronoun-Referent Structures By Children In Grades Two, Four, And Six., J G. Barnitz
Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications
A study of 191 native English speaking working class children in grades two, four, and six was undertaken to investigate the development of reading comprehension of selected pronoun-referent structures. Three linguistic comparisons were made: referent type, reference order, and referent distance. Target sentences were constructed with these features and were embedded into short passages, each followed by questions based on the target structure. It was found that noun phrase pronominal structures were easier to comprehend than sentential pronominals, structures with forward reference were easier to comprehend than those with backward reference, and there was no significant difference between inter-sentential structures …
