The Return To Process: The Reading Example, Marcia Baghban Jul 1983

The Return To Process: The Reading Example, Marcia Baghban

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

A growing number of reading educators are adjusting the primary focus of their attention from learner performance to learner competence. The rationale of this shift from a product to a process orientation lies in the assumption that even the youngest humans are able to observe, categorize, associate, hypothesize, revise, integrate information, and solve problems. These learning strategies enable humans not only to think and to talk, but also to become literate. Oral language and reading are viewed, therefore, as constructive processes, reflective of the particular culture which gives rise to them. These processes develop in response to meaningful experiences, and …

Difficulties Of Learning English As A Second Language For Thai Speakers, Tipsuda Rutngamlug Jul 1983

Difficulties Of Learning English As A Second Language For Thai Speakers, Tipsuda Rutngamlug

Theses

The primary hypothetical question for this study was: Would a formal ESL program make a decided difference in terms of reducing English phonological and syntactic problems for Thai speakers learning English? The linguistic data was collected from a limited sample (22) of native Thai speakers in the St. Louis area. The subjects were divided into two groups: those with ESL training (Group 1) and those without ESL training (Group 2). A series of identical selected sentences were recorded from both groups. The selected sentences contained phonological and syntactic English structures which have been found to be problematic for Thai speakers. …

A Comparative Study Between A Readiness Measure And An Achievement Test As Measured By The Metropolitan Readiness Test And The Science Research Associates Achievement Series, Linda L. Ditchburn Jul 1983

A Comparative Study Between A Readiness Measure And An Achievement Test As Measured By The Metropolitan Readiness Test And The Science Research Associates Achievement Series, Linda L. Ditchburn

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

The objective of this research was to complete an experimental study which would investigate the nature of the relationship between readiness and achievement. Data collection included two components: scores from the Metropolitan Readiness Test (MRT), administered at the kindergarten level; and scores from the Science Research Associates (SRA) Achievement Series, administered to the same 284 subjects at the fourth grade level. Correlation coefficients between these two tests were determined for all subtests, total tests, composites, and the Educational Ability Series. Since correlation coefficients between the MRT and the SRA evidenced significantly positive relation ships, the implication is clear that performance …

A Comparison Of Left And Right Brain Hemisphere Processing And Brain Related Sex Differences In Kindergarten Children, Margaret K. Hickerson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to (1) compare the performance on left and right hemisphere processing tasks of male and female kindergarten students from three instructional approaches, and (2) to determine the effectiveness of an educational application: the use of "hands-on" inquiry-oriented science activities designed to engage the right hemisphere in improving left and right hemisphere processing. Subjects included 79 students enrolled in intact kindergarten classes representative of three instructional approaches: (1) the Traditional-Conventional Instructional Approach, (2) the Montessori Approach, and (3) the Open Activity-Centered Instructional Approach. Recent studies of elementary school children's language have revealed developmental trends in the acquisition of syntax. The following discussion reviews studies of the productive oral syntax (Le., studies of syntax based on natural conversation) of children between ages 5 and 9 years, in terms of: developmental characteristics of productive oral syntax; the relationship between conservation (a measure of cognitive maturity) and productive oral syntax; and recommendations for classroom instruction.
