Reinventing The University: Finding The Place For Basic Writers, Jane E. Hindman
Reinventing The University: Finding The Place For Basic Writers, Jane E. Hindman
Publications and Research
A poststructuralist critique of basic writing placement and pedagogy, this paper argues that our notions of good writing (i.e., the criteria by which we as English professors and compositionists authorize and "place" students) come not from some general or transcendent standards, but rather from the practices by which we self-authorize within our own discourse community. Using Bartholomae and Petrosky's curriculum presented in Facts, Artifacts, Counterfacts as a point of departure, I propose a language-centered curriculum which uses discourse itself as the subject of the semester-Jong project wherein students eventually learn to critique our practices and create their own discourse communities. …

"We are living at a time in U.S. cultural history in which the autonomy and dignity of the human spirit is being threatened rather than exercised. What makes it bearable is what is hidden from us, what is repressively desublimated. The current historical juncture is precisely that perilous mixture of historical amnesia and cultural intensity in which society is attempting to reinvent itself without the benefit of knowing who or what it already is."

The Identity In Crisis: A New Approach To The Culture Shock Experience Of University Exchange Students, Christina Maria Luther
The Identity In Crisis: A New Approach To The Culture Shock Experience Of University Exchange Students, Christina Maria Luther
Dissertations and Theses
The relationship of language and culture is explored in this thesis for the purpose of better understanding why all sojourners, regardless of preparation, experience some degree of culture shock. The author begins with a review of literature on culture shock establishing that the native language of sojourners is not considered to be of any consequence to the sojourning experience. The fields of intercultural communication, social psychology and psychology are then explored to establish the link between language and culture and to introduce the notion of linguistic identity. Evidence found in each of these fields leads the author to conclude that …

The Effects Of Cognitive Style On The Learning Preferences Of Graduate School Students, Carey F. Tucker, John W. Underwood
The Effects Of Cognitive Style On The Learning Preferences Of Graduate School Students, Carey F. Tucker, John W. Underwood
Theses and Dissertations
This research establishes significant relationships between an individual's cognitive style, measured by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) , and the learning preferences of that individual, measured by the Learning Style Survey. The sample consisted of 529 Air Force Institute of Technology graduate students in the School of Systems and Logistics from 1988 to 1992, who completed four tests, pre- and post-tests of both the MBTI and the LSS. This research utilized Chi-Squared Goodness of Fit procedures, determining that some learning methods, techniques, and devices (MTDs) are most or least preferred by all four cognitive types, Sensing-Thinking, Sensing-Feeling, Intuitive-Thinking, and Intuitive-Feeling. …

The Natural Approach And The Audiolingual Method: A Question Of Student Gains And Retention, Jeffrey Robert Richards
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in the short term and and long term second language (L2) gains of first year Spanish students exposed to the Audiolingual Method (ALM) and the Natural Approach. The experiment consisted of two randomly selected groups which were exposed to four presentations. Two of these presentations delivered content material following a Natural Approach lesson design while the other two delivered content material following an ALM lesson design in such a way that both groups were exposed to two ALM lessons and two Natural Approach lessons. All subjects were pre-tested prior to …

Data was collected from two cohorts of students enrolled in the ESL program on two separate occasions, each approximately one year apart. The goals of the study included the following: ( 1) …

Choosing And Using Children's Literature: The Rationales And Instructional Designs Of Preservice Teachers, Nancy J. Gooden
Choosing And Using Children's Literature: The Rationales And Instructional Designs Of Preservice Teachers, Nancy J. Gooden
Masters Theses
This study examined the extent to which preservice teachers were aware of gender related issues in their selection and use of children's literature. The review of research provided background information on the subject of gender equity in children's literature and explored the effects of stereotyped attitudes on students' academic performance, self-esteem, and career choices. The application project used three instruments of study: a gender attitude survey, an analysis of preservice teachers' rationales for literature selection, and an examination of preservice teachers' instructional designs. The results of this study indicated that preservice teachers may benefit from additional exposure to gender issues …
