Taking Charge: Second Graders Negotiate Ownership Of Their Expressive Writing, Susan Douglas Fleming
Taking Charge: Second Graders Negotiate Ownership Of Their Expressive Writing, Susan Douglas Fleming
Educational Studies Dissertations
This ethnographic study of a single, second grade, public school classroom explores students' ownership of their writing as they negotiate their dual roles of active writer and compliant student.
Writing process advocates such as Calkins (1987), Graves (1983), and Murray (1968, 1985) stress the need for student writers to assume ownership of their work by writing from personal experience and by making the decisions governing direction of the text. This involvement encourages awareness of self as learner and as person, and stimulates cognitive and identity development. Robert Brooke (1991), in a study of college students, points out that the power …
Conceptual Representation Of The Newtonian Model Of Motion In University Physics Students, GiannēS ChatzēGeōRgiou
Conceptual Representation Of The Newtonian Model Of Motion In University Physics Students, GiannēS ChatzēGeōRgiou
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to investigate how undergraduate students at the University of Northern Iowa who had taken prior coursework on non-calculus general physics with a unit on mechanics understand the Newtonian model of motion. In general, the study was concerned with reasoning strategies, the preconceptions that give rise to these strategies, and the schema that might be inferred from the preconceptions. In particular, the study focused on the three fundamental notions of the Newtonian model of motion: (a) that uniform straight line motion is equivalent to rest, (b) that motion is relative to an inertial frame of …

Enrichment For All: A Successful Alternative For The Instruction Of Chapter I Students, Karmen R. Larson
Enrichment For All: A Successful Alternative For The Instruction Of Chapter I Students, Karmen R. Larson
Graduate Research Papers
The instructional approach traditionally used for the instruction of Chapter I students is that of remediation. This approach tends to enable and perpetuate low achievement in students by focusing on skills and mechanics at the students' present level of achievement. Acceleration instead of remediation can prevent students from staying behind or falling further behind grade level. This paper describes a program developed by the researcher based on acceleration as an alternative to traditional Chapter I instruction. The results of the implementation of this program with third grade Chapter I students are also presented in this paper.

The goal of the project was to coordinate a group of quality materials and suggest response activities to support using an integrated curriculum approach, specifically a literature-based social studies theme.
Nonverbal Communication In The Work Place As Perceived By Men And Women, Judith Lou Loonan
Nonverbal Communication In The Work Place As Perceived By Men And Women, Judith Lou Loonan
Graduate Research Papers
In order to understand the issue of nonverbal communication in the workplace as perceived by men and women, the work history of men and women and how they arrived at the present point of communication must be looked at. It must also be established what the meaning of nonverbal communication is. This research will provide a guide to establish these two points. After World War II, and especially within the past 20 years, more and more women have entered the work force. "It is estimated that by the year 2000, the percentage of women will grow to 50% of the …

Fostering Home-School Relationships To Nurture Children's Literacy, Jenette M. Schulte
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this paper is to explore ways teachers can promote a relationship between the home and school to nurture the literacy of primary-age children. A review of professional literature will address the home environment's influence on children's emerging literacy, ways parents can support their children's school program, and avenues teachers can use in communicating with parents. From this information base, the writer will plan ways to foster school-home communication.
A Comparative Study Of Composition Elements By Elementary Students Using Computer Technology, Mary Elizabeth Streich
A Comparative Study Of Composition Elements By Elementary Students Using Computer Technology, Mary Elizabeth Streich
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to investigate how the use of a word processor for writing composition differed in the number of words and sentences when compared to handwriting composition samples. In addition, the study compared the types of words and sentences used in the writing samples. There is a need for empirical evidence on the effect of a word processor on children's writing. The subjects (N = 38) in the study were sixth-grade students at North Tama Elementary School, Traer, Iowa.

(1994) The Five Communities, David K. Kennedy
(1994) The Five Communities, David K. Kennedy
Collected Papers of David Kennedy
Those of us who have experienced the joy and terror of the intensive formation of a philosophical community of inquiry (COI) over an extended period, understand intuitively that it is a process of development which has certain characteristic structures and patterns. These can be glossed in a number of ways, all of which will be metaphors, if only because any given moment in the life of the COI is an instant of vertiginous freedom. The five structural dimensions of the COI which I am identifying are gesture, language, mind, love, and interest. I want to call them "communities" because each …

The Role Of Paraprofessionals In The Instruction Of Limited English Proficient Students, Magaly Lavadenz
The Role Of Paraprofessionals In The Instruction Of Limited English Proficient Students, Magaly Lavadenz
School of Education Faculty Works
A small-scale ethnographic study investigated: (1) the instructional role of the paraprofessional/teacher aide in dealing with the educational needs of limited-English-proficient (LEP) students; (2) to what extent the paraprofessional is aware of those needs; (3) whether ethnic or linguistic differences between paraprofessionals yield distinctive instructional strategies; and (4) the career goals of these individuals. The study was conducted over the course of three months in a suburban school district with a high proportion of LEP students. Twenty-two monolingual and bilingual teacher aides at 6 elementary schools responded to a survey concerning personal information (gender, ethnic and language background), education, working …
Linguistic Theory Applied To Teaching Practice: Looking Through Linguists' Eyes At An Urban Esl Classroom, Caroline Mary El-Kadi
Linguistic Theory Applied To Teaching Practice: Looking Through Linguists' Eyes At An Urban Esl Classroom, Caroline Mary El-Kadi
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
The quality of instruction in English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) programs is of utmost concern to urban educators as more and more non-native speakers settle in urban areas and need better language skills to participate fully in American society. Training of ESL instructors is often difficult, given the limited resources of most programs. In ESL, a close study of classroom discourse has long been considered particularly useful, but undirected classroom observation is of limited use because what novices notice in the classroom is often inaccurate or irrelevant. Ways are needed to focus beginning teachers' observations. Over several decades, discourse analysts have devised methods …
Exposure To Electronic Entertainment Media And Student Outcomes In Two Demographically Diverse Elementary Schools, Ronald W. Busby
Exposure To Electronic Entertainment Media And Student Outcomes In Two Demographically Diverse Elementary Schools, Ronald W. Busby
Dissertations
Problem. Standardized test-score results have declined sharply and learning difficulties have risen significantly during the decades that electronic entertainment media (EEM) have become a national phenomenon. Exposure to electronic entertainment media has generated much speculation, discussion, and study. Research, however, is lacking on how sensory overload impinges upon the brain and mind of developing children with respect to learning and adapting socially. Thus, research is needed that addresses sensory overload phenomena and academic performance and social behavior.
Methodology. The population consisted of 349 third- and fourth-grade children in a demographically diverse public school district located in southwestern Michigan.

Balanced Reading Instruction: Birth Of A New Movement, Eljean B. Bartelt
Balanced Reading Instruction: Birth Of A New Movement, Eljean B. Bartelt
Graduate Research Papers
The question of how best to teach children to read and write has been debated for years. Cunningham ( 1991) suggests that reading instruction began in the United States with a alphabetic approach. Children learned the letters, and then spelled and sounded out the letters of words. This approach was known later as the phonics approach. Some educators still insist that it is the only sensible approach to begin reading instruction (Adams, 1991; Stahl, 1992; Stahl & Miller, 1989; Teale, 1991). The most commonly used reading material in reading instruction has been the basal reader (Chall, 1983; May, 1994). Basals …
School Librarians And Their Work Place: A Study Of Terminology Preference, Judith A. Palumbo-Gates
School Librarians And Their Work Place: A Study Of Terminology Preference, Judith A. Palumbo-Gates
Graduate Research Papers
Two sets of 1992 periodicals were studied to determine terminology preferences, one set written by and for school librarianship professionals, the other written by and for educators. Word counts were taken of the traditional terms "library"/"librarian" and the newer accepted terms "media center"/"media specialist", the latter adopted by the American Association of School Librarians over a 24 year period. The data showed 24% of librarianship professionals mix terms, 40% use accepted terms exclusively, and 35% use traditional terms exclusively. A majority either mix terms or use the traditional. Among educator authors, 86% were found to use traditional terminology 50% or …

A Study Of The Relationship Between The Waetjen Self-Concept As A Learner Scale, The Iowa Tests Of Educational Development, And Cumulative Grade Point Average, Heather Williams Kaufman
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Numerous studies have been conducted with respect to self-concept (Marsh & Shavelson, 1985; Shavelson & Bolus, 1982). Learner self-concept is considered to be a specific dimension of general self-concept (Brookover & Gottlieb, 1964). Due to increased interest in learner self-concept, more academically focused self-concept measures, such as the Self-Concept As a Learner Scale (SCAL) (Waetjen, 1967), were developed. Previous studies conducted by Randall (1989), Schmidt (1990), and Wood (1991) established that learner self-concept and locus of control have construct independence (are uncorrelated). All three researchers used the Self-Concept As a Learner Scale (Waetjen, 1967) and the Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control …

Attitudes Towards Mathematics Of Vietnamese And Non-Vietnamese Senior Secondary Female Students, Robert G. Palmer
Attitudes Towards Mathematics Of Vietnamese And Non-Vietnamese Senior Secondary Female Students, Robert G. Palmer
Theses : Honours
Throughout Australia and indeed in many parts of the world, there is a growing realisation that girls tend not to achieve their full potential at school, especially with regard to higher level mathematics units. Many girls limit their post-school options by choosing not to continue with mathematics when it ceases to be compulsory in Years 11 and 12. They also choose less difficult mathematics units and participate at a level below their potential. Much of the research has focused on gender differences in attitudes towards mathematics, and on participation and achievement in mathematics, but not on ethnic differences. The purpose …
Applying Communication Studies In Hong Kong, John Lee Jellicorse
Applying Communication Studies In Hong Kong, John Lee Jellicorse
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
The article discusses the trends in communication education in Hong Kong, China. Since communication is labor intensive, the need for personnel is swelling rapidly. Obviously, academic institutions in the region are faced with a tremendous challenge to encompass these developments. The School of Communication at Hong Kong Baptist is attempting to meet the challenge. Hong Kong Baptist College, then a small, private diploma granting institution funded primarily from tuition fees, initiated its first program in communication. During the crucial period of its maturation from a diploma program to a degree course, the communication curriculum at Hong Kong Baptist was administered …
