Worldview Theory And Conceptual Change In Science Education, William W. Cobern Jan 1994

Worldview Theory And Conceptual Change In Science Education, William W. Cobern

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

Once again science education finds itself in the midst of reform. Reform documents are too numerous to mention by name but they all share the same view that Americans know far too little science. Durant (1990) noted that even the well educated often know little science. Of course every reform document by its very nature offers a solution. Many in the science education research community "see conceptual change as the emerging focus of science teaching" (Wandersee, 1993, p. 319) and thus focus their research interests here as well. To borrow warfare metaphors, conceptual change activities are tactical devices used to …

Demon In The Doorway, Satan In The Schoolhouse: The Myth Of Values Education As Social Savior, Aaron Podolefsky Jan 1994

Demon In The Doorway, Satan In The Schoolhouse: The Myth Of Values Education As Social Savior, Aaron Podolefsky

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Conflicts of values are among the most intractable of disagreements. Because values are core elements of who we are, individuals tend to take positions from which they will not compromise. Because values are, ultimately, tied to norms and goals, groups become concerned about the larger agenda of others. Today, many educators are concerned because much of the pressure for teaching values in schools is coming from religious groups perceived as extremist, intolerant, and divisive.

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Joseph G. Malsam Jan 1994

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Joseph G. Malsam

Graduate Research Papers

As a classroom teacher for several years, I've had the opportunity to develop what I believe to be a fair and equitable learning environment. I have a real liking for what I've done as a teacher, a respect for my students and an understanding of the proper student-teacher relationship. I've worked with several student-teachers and have attempted to pass on learned skills to them through their on-the-job experiences. Through the years these experiences have helped me continue to learn and grow as a classroom facilitator. I am now at a crossroads of professional growth and have determined a potential change …

Integrating Drama Into The Basal Reading Program, Belinda Jo Mccormack Jan 1994

Integrating Drama Into The Basal Reading Program, Belinda Jo Mccormack

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project was to develop a means of integrating drama into the basal reading program. This was accomplished by adapting Silver-Burdett & Ginn and Scott Foresman basal stories into plays at the second grade level. The benefits of engaging children in drama were studied. The literature suggests that drama is a fun and effective instructional tool: it effectively develops reading comprehension and language skills in young readers; drama has proven to be an excellent teaching strategy when used to motivate and interest reluctant readers. Drama can be an excellent supplement to traditional basal reading instruction by adding …

Understanding Society's Process Of Change, Thomas Wells Jan 1994

Understanding Society's Process Of Change, Thomas Wells

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

At first glance, the question Whose Children? Whose Schools? seems fairly straight forward. State law requires public schools to educate all children between the ages of 5 and 16 who present themselves at our doors. But of course the real question being asked is something quite different than this simple one. The real question is how and why do we educate young people in our democracy? The issue is further confused by the increasingly pluralistic nature of our society because we, as a nation and society, have not even agreed as to whether we value this diversity. As a country, …

The Implication Of Cultural Diversity In American Schools, Johnson A. Afolayan Jan 1994

The Implication Of Cultural Diversity In American Schools, Johnson A. Afolayan

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The purpose of this article is to analyze the major factors responsible for the cultural diversity in America and their implications for professional educators. These factors include immigration, communication, linguistic diversity, cultural values, and desegregation. While some educators look to the demographics of the new student population, others consider historical clues as a method of understanding American diversity. Statistics about school achievement and dropout and graduation rates show the disparity among the ethnic groups. The new immigrants and ethnic groups may experience conflict as a result of cultural attitudes of teachers and peers. Individuals cannot be understood unless they are …

Schools And Choice, Timothy Stoffer Jan 1994

Schools And Choice, Timothy Stoffer

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

One of the most important decisions in a democracy is the kind of education we want for our children. The concept of public education rests on the assumption that the way we educate our youth is based on the fact we want to provide and hope for a better future.

Much of the debate over education in the United States lies in philosophical differences over how schools should be organized, governed, funded, and operated. An understanding of the distinction between public and private schools in this country is important.

School Sexism And Its Educational Implications, Michelle Ann Frantz Jan 1994

School Sexism And Its Educational Implications, Michelle Ann Frantz

Masters Theses

Despite American education's claim that it is an equalizing force, a body of research documents that females do not receive equitable experiences in school when compared to the same experiences of boys. This study investigates many of the forces that have contributed to the persistence of gender inequity.; This study then examines feminist theory, the history of female education, and current research on school sexism. Next, the results of surveys given to a group of secondary educators and another given to a random sampling of high school students do show that gender inequities still occur even though claims to the …

Presenting Italian Comparative And Superlative Forms Of Adjectives To College L2 Beginners, Ilona Klein Jan 1994

Presenting Italian Comparative And Superlative Forms Of Adjectives To College L2 Beginners, Ilona Klein

Faculty Publications

This study treats the necessity to de-emphasize the focus on grammar teaching alone in L2, and to introduce methods which are not teacher-centered, so as to enable students to interact more among each other.

By using comparative and superlative forms of adjectives – but in reality using a sequence of teaching techniques that could be applied to other grammatical situations – this article presents the use of sea shells as a visual and tactile aid which allows students to shift their L2 efforts from an abstract notion to a concrete usage.

This study offers a tool to attempt a balance …

The Effectiveness Of Two Organizational Strategies In Sixth Grade Social Studies, Liesa Brobst Bailey Jan 1994

The Effectiveness Of Two Organizational Strategies In Sixth Grade Social Studies, Liesa Brobst Bailey

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of two organizational strategies (outlining and mapping) in sixth grade social studies. Furthermore, the study sought to determine if the effectiveness of these strategies was dependent upon student learning preference; sequential or global. The effectiveness of the two organizational strategies was determined by comparing differences in group mean scores, using a 2 x 2 factorial ANOVA repeated over one factor (organizational strategy used). The study was replicated a second time. Students were asked to read and study information on the Canadian province, Nova Scotia, using the strategy: outlining and mapping, …

The Schooling Of Vietnamese-American High School Students In Oregon: Their Perspectives, Minh Van Tran Jan 1994

The Schooling Of Vietnamese-American High School Students In Oregon: Their Perspectives, Minh Van Tran

Dissertations and Theses

Research on the education of Vietnamese-Americans is very limited, and mainstream media continue to project Vietnamese students either as high achievers or gang affiliated (Castro, 1983; Davis & McDaid, 1992). This kind of projection can mask the real issues that Vietnamese students are facing. Based on Cummins' (1979) Contextual Interaction Theory, this study examined the views of Vietnamese-American high school students in Oregon regarding their schooling under four major areas: Community Background Factors, Educational Input Factors, Instructional Treatment, and Student Input Factors. In particular, this study examined factors, within the above four areas, pertaining to the schooling of Vietnamese-American high …
