Pandemic Abandonment, Panoramic Displays And Fascist Propaganda: The Month The Earth Stood Still, Peter Mclaren

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"While governing a country facing a global pandemic, a shattered economy, and widespread civil unrest over the death of George Floyd, Trump has shown little compassion for humanity and has chosen ego gratification over care and concern for his countrymen and in the process put the entire world in greater danger from Covid-19."

The Effects Of Social-Emotional Learning At The Secondary Level, Karmen Keltner

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This literature review aims to examine social-emotional learning in schools, and more specifically, at the secondary level. The review explains the importance of SEL at the secondary level and its continuation from preschool through high school. Evidence-based secondary SEL programs are presented, and research, including several meta-analyses, are shared that outline the benefits and disadvantages of social-emotional learning programs. Mandated SEL standards at the federal and state levels are covered, as well as policies and laws that enforce and support SEL. An analysis of the published literature on SEL programs at the secondary level suggests they lead to improved academics, …

Autonomous Vehicle Manufacturers: Applying A Common Carrier Liability Scheme To Autonomous Vehicle Manufacturers—And Why Elon Musk Will Be Haunted By His Words, Alejandro Monarrez Jul 2020

Autonomous Vehicle Manufacturers: Applying A Common Carrier Liability Scheme To Autonomous Vehicle Manufacturers—And Why Elon Musk Will Be Haunted By His Words, Alejandro Monarrez

Seattle University Law Review Online

The modes and levels of vehicle automation have advanced over the years with the goal of making driving safer. Features like self-steering, lane assist, and blind-spot warning are designed to assist drivers in operating their vehicles. However, the emergence of autonomous vehicle technology self-driving capabilities raises new questions about tort liability.

Since 2016, there have been numerous fatalities involving autonomous vehicles. In this Note, Alejandro Monarrez explores how we should assess liability in autonomous vehicle-related accidents when vehicles are in full automation mode. Monarrez similarly argues the common carrier liability scheme first conceptualized by Dylan LeValley in Autonomous Vehicle Liability—Application …

Better Serving Students In Foster Care In The Classroom, Emily P. Cihon May 2020

Better Serving Students In Foster Care In The Classroom, Emily P. Cihon

Honors Projects

Within this work, I utilize research to educate current and future teachers on the inner-workings of the foster care system and how to utilize this information to inform teaching and better serve students in foster care in the classroom. Through surveying preservice teachers I located common questions about the topic such as reasons for the increase in the number of children in foster care, grounds for removing children from their homes, moving them through hearings, and finding placements, guardians, and advocates. I had the opportunity to learn from and interview foster care alumni and advocates who work within the foster …

What Are The Patterns Of Shared Viewpoints, Attitudes, Beliefs, And Opinions Of Full-Time Grandparent Caregivers About Their Experiences? A Q Methodological Study, Korrin Denee Kim May 2020

What Are The Patterns Of Shared Viewpoints, Attitudes, Beliefs, And Opinions Of Full-Time Grandparent Caregivers About Their Experiences? A Q Methodological Study, Korrin Denee Kim

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Objective: Millions of grandparents in the United States provide full-time care to grandchildren. Although their actions are largely altruistic, they do not come without sacrifice. Often these sacrifices are associated with major consequences. Little is known about how grandparents prioritize their sacrifices. An improved understanding of how grandparents prioritize their sacrifices could facilitate better awareness, more specialized care, and improved policies for this population. Method: I used Q methodology to investigate grandparents’ perspectives on the sacrifices that they make to raise their grandchildren. Thirteen participants were recruited using snowball and purposive sampling. To create the Q-set, I used 26 statements …

Going The Distance: A Case Study Of One Community College's Journey Across The Digital Divide, Michael Robert Jolley

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Rural communities throughout the nation continue to lag their urban and suburban peers in access to high-speed internet service. This digital divide affects rural populations in a myriad of ways, but access to higher educational opportunities may be most problematic. While the promise of technology to level the field for rural students continues to offer hope, the scarcity of broadband service lingers. This qualitative instrumental case study explores how one exceptional rural community college in the Great Plains developed the capacity to deliver distance education programming. The study relies upon Rogers's theory of diffusion of innovations to validate the extent …

Analysis Of Essential Programs And Services Components: System Administration, James E. Sloan, Amy F. Johnson Phd, Sharon Gerrish

System Administration

The purpose of this report is to provide data analysis and recommendations for the System Administration component within Maine’s Essential Programs and Services (EPS) education cost model. The System Administration component is intended to ensure sufficient funding for the overall oversight of school districts. It includes costs for district-wide staff such as superintendents, human resources personnel, business managers, and associated support staff. System Administration also incorporates Board of Education costs. It does not include costs for direct administration of schools or programs; funding for school administration (i.e. principals) is allocated within a separate staff ratio component of the EPS model. …

Development Of An Experiential Leadership Curriculum Using The Absorb, Do, Connect Model, Sarah Norris Jan 2020

Development Of An Experiential Leadership Curriculum Using The Absorb, Do, Connect Model, Sarah Norris

Education Projects

Numerous leadership development programs exist in both the educational and workforce sectors. However, many organizations, specifically nonprofit and governmental agencies, do not have access to hands-on leadership development curriculum that fits their needs. Often, they either send new leadership staff to off-site “leadership training” that does not provide a transfer of learning aspect to be practiced and applied on site,or they create “make-shift” leadership training sessions that do not show validated improvements. The purpose of this project was to develop and betatest anexperiential learning curriculum for emerging leaders using the Absorb, Do, Connect model (Horton, 2012). The curriculum is generic …

Parents And Educators Perspectives Of Chronic Absenteeism: Strategies To Improve Attendance, Gloria Genene Woullard-Wilder

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The research problem for this study was the chronic absenteeism for students in Grades 1–3 in a high-poverty, low-performing elementary school in a Southern state. Chronic absenteeism (CA) can result in poor reading skills and high dropout rates for students in low-income areas. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the perspectives of 6 parents, 6 educators, and 4 school support staff regarding the causes of CA in Grades 1–3 and recommendations to increase and sustain attendance. Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory served as the framework. The research questions were used to identify causes of CA and suggestions …

Special Education By Zip Code: Creating Equitable Child Find Policies, Crystal Grant

Faculty Scholarship

It is estimated that more than 1.3 million youth in the United States have a disability. One in four American adults have a disability that impacts major life activities. With disability rates this high, our nation must prioritize efforts to ensure that all children with disabilities and in need of special education are identified and receive the support they need in school. Congress, through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), mandated that all public schools locate, identify and evaluate all students suspected of having a disability. The special education community refers to this affirmative duty as “child find.” Unfortunately, …
