What Is The Health Impact Of Day Care Attendance On Infants And Preschoolers?, Ruth L. Berkelman, Mary Guinan, Phen B. Thacker

School of Public Health Faculty Research

The impact of various child care arrangements on the health of infants and preschool children is not known in any systematic way, yet by 1990 more than 10 million of these children may be receiving their care in day care facilities (1). Concerns over the health of these children and health practices within day care facilities have already led some States to place regulation of day care facilities under the jurisdiction of the department of health (2,3), and others are presently considering such legislation. In addition, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recently published "Health in Day Care," a manual …

Prenatal Education And Support (Pes) Program For Inner City Parents Who Have Children Enrolled In A Preschool Program, Sarah L. Mack

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The problem addressed was that many women became pregnant in the Head Start program for the second, third, or more times and had received no or inadequate parental care. Many lacked the understanding of what constituted healthy conscience and quality prenatal care. Some of the low-expected women failed to see the relationship between adequate parental care and pregnancy outcomes.

The PES program operated for one and a half hours bi-monthly for eight months. A series of 15 sessions was conducted by medical professionals and educators to the benefits for the women and their unborn infants or use as incentives, along …

An Assessment Of Selected Health Occupation Students' Attitudes About Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, Jo Ann Jensen

Graduate Research Papers

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome is a rapidly growing public health concern. The purpose of this original 1988 study at the University of Northern Iowa was to determine by questionnaire if there was a difference in attitudes of thirteen Dental Assistant, thirteen Medical Assistant, and one hundred nineteen Nursing students at a selected midwestern Community College toward Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Questionnaire scores were analyzed using analysis of variance at the .05 level. The groups differed on six of the fifty four items on the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome Attitude questionnaire. Results suggest minimal differences among the groups. Identification of attitudes …

G88-883 Managing Of Disease To Produce Antibiotic/Residue Free Animal Food Products, Duane Rice, R. Gene White

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses the use of antibiotics in animals, approved drugs and extra-label drugs, and ways to test for drug residue. Infectious diseases in livestock are costly, and prevention is the best approach to minimize such losses. Yet despite good management practices and extensive preventive measures, disease outbreaks do occur, and treatments become necessary. To obtain antibiotic residue-free products from food animals, knowledgeable decisions regarding the use of medications are necessary. It is important to realize that antibiotic treatments are used only to eliminate or shorten the duration of existing infections, or to prevent secondary bacterial infections. These infections may …

Introducing Aids Education In Connecticut Schools, William Sabella Jan 1988

Introducing Aids Education In Connecticut Schools, William Sabella

New England Journal of Public Policy

Most of the nation 's schoolchildren are not infected with the AIDS virus (HIV). Since AIDS is a preventable disease, no one need become infected. In order to protect themselves, everyone, including children, must understand exactly how HIV is and is not contracted. The message of prevention, however, is controversial, since it must include advice on safer sex and drug use.

In 1984, Connecticut was forced to face the issue of a child with HIV infection entering school. The state responded by creating guidelines for prevention of disease transmission in schools and by subsequently developing an AIDS curriculum. Obstacles to …

An experimental design was used with subjects randomly assigned either to the experimental or control group. Both groups received traditional education in the hospital setting. In addition, the experimental group received the home health teaching program and the control group received an assessment visit for the purpose of counteracting the Hawthorne effect. Health Knowledge And Health Behavior Of Deaf Adults In Black Hawk County, Iowa, Leslie Ellen Smith Jan 1988

Health Knowledge And Health Behavior Of Deaf Adults In Black Hawk County, Iowa, Leslie Ellen Smith

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the present health knowledge and health behavior of deaf adults in Black Hawk County, Iowa. In addition, the relationship between knowledge and behavior was examined. It was hypothesized that health knowledge and health behavior would be positively correlated.

A list of deaf adults was compiled through contacts with public and private agencies serving the deaf. Subjects received an introductory letter and response form by mail with subsequent telephone follow-up. Twenty-three deaf adults participated in the study representing 21% of the known, non-institutionalized deaf adults in the county. Participants were interviewed with …

A Process To Credential The Registered Nurse As First Assistant During Surgery, Marilyn A. Hunter Jan 1988

A Process To Credential The Registered Nurse As First Assistant During Surgery, Marilyn A. Hunter

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The evolution of contemporary medical practice over the past 30 years is extraordinary. This researcher has observed medical practitioners with many years of preparation in the role as first assistant to the surgeon. When phrases as "cost effective and cost containment" were verbalized it was obvious radical changes were to be made. As time went by non-physicians were employed as first assistants. These individuals attained certification by going through rigorous training programs for surgical assistants. Registered nurses were assigned to assist the surgeons in surgery. An on-the-job training was taking place. Unfortunately, only the practical application of surgical assisting was …
