G93-1170 Bacteria In Milk Sources And Control, Gerald R. Bodman, Duane N. Rice Jan 1993

G93-1170 Bacteria In Milk Sources And Control, Gerald R. Bodman, Duane N. Rice

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Bacterial contamination reduces the quality of milk and can cause serious health problems. This NebGuide discusses common causes of contamination as well as prevention.

Bacteria are single-cell organisms that multiply by dividing to form two cells (a process known as mitosis). Under optimum conditions, many bacteria can double in number each 20 minutes. That means one bacterium can result in up to 16,000,000 bacteria in just eight hours. They are microscopic in size, i.e., an individual bacterium cannot be seen without the aid of a microscope. They are so small that a single drop of water from a cow's udder …

G93-1148 Common Infectious Diseases That Cause Abortions In Cattle, Duane N. Rice, Douglas Rogers

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Many abortions occur very early after conception and the embryos or fetuses are so small that they may not be seen. Other abortions may occur near normal calving time and it is difficult to determine whether the cow has aborted or whether a premature birth has occurred. Abortions have many causes which may include physiological problems (such as hormonal imbalances), metabolic problems, toxicoses and/or infectious diseases caused by protozoa, bacteria or …

G92-1093 Use Of Animal Drugs In Livestock Management, Duane N. Rice, Barbara E. Straw

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

How to handle antibiotics and other drugs to prevent residues in meat while maintaining an effective animal health program.

Use of animal drugs in food animal production must be accepted as a responsibility rather than a right when trying to improve animal health. Drugs should be used to enhance a health program and not as a substitute for good management.

Disease prevention is based on good nutritional and environmental factors, sanitation, and the use of a complete herd health program. Use of vaccines for common diseases and in some cases segregation or culling of infected animals is important. Good management …
