A Phenomenological Study Of Rural Elementary Principals In Western And Central New York Perceptions Of Isolation, Bonnie Cazer

Education Doctoral

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to develop an understanding of rural elementary principals’ perceptions of isolation. This study posed the question: In what ways do rural elementary principals in Western and Central New York perceive isolation? The research design included semi-structured interviews of a purposeful sample of five rural elementary principals in Western and Central New York. This study utilized the theoretical framework of Ryan and Deci’s (2018) relationship motivation theory. Six themes emerged through transcendental phenomenological analysis: distance divides, power of networks, outsider syndrome, relationships are the foundation, wearing many hats, and building know how. Findings …

Experiences, Perceptions, And Views Of Substance Use Among Emerging Adults: A Multisite Qualitative Virtual Study, Elizabeth M. Walton

Education Doctoral

The use of tobacco products, alcohol, and marijuana peaks in emerging adulthood. Research on substance use generally focuses on adolescent or adult samples, with emerging adults at times being grouped in one or the other, yet emerging adults encounter unique conditions that make them worthy of isolated study. This study investigated the experiences, perceptions, and harm reduction techniques used by college attending, college completed, and noncollege attending emerging adults regarding tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana use. A multisite qualitative analysis was used. Research questions focused on (a) ecological factors impacting emerging adult substance users, (b) strategies employed to reduce harm as …

Promoting Healthy Decision-Making Via Natural Environment Exposure: Initial Evidence And Future Directions, Meredith S. Berry, Meredith A. Repke, Alexander L. Metcalf, Kerry Jordan

Psychology Faculty Publications

Research within psychology and other disciplines has shown that exposure to natural environments holds extensive physiological and psychological benefits. Adding to the health and cognitive benefits of natural environments, evidence suggests that exposure to nature also promotes healthy human decision-making. Unhealthy decision-making (e.g., smoking, non-medical prescription opioid misuse) and disorders associated with lack of impulse control [e.g., tobacco use, opioid use disorder (OUD)], contribute to millions of preventable deaths annually (i.e., 6 million people die each year of tobacco-related illness worldwide, deaths from opioids from 2002 to 2017 have more than quadrupled in the United States alone). Impulsive and unhealthy …

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"While governing a country facing a global pandemic, a shattered economy, and widespread civil unrest over the death of George Floyd, Trump has shown little compassion for humanity and has chosen ego gratification over care and concern for his countrymen and in the process put the entire world in greater danger from Covid-19."

Making Elearning Engaging: The Effect Of Technology Strategies On Student Engagement And Content Knowledge Development In A Secondary Mathematics Digital Classroom, Allison Knapp

Theses and Dissertations

This action research study employed a mixed-methods design to examine the effect of technology strategies on secondary students’ engagement and development of geometry content knowledge in an eLearning setting. Seeking to understand student preferences of the technology tools, this two-week study was conducted during a geometry unit on quadrilaterals and employed the following technology tools: student response systems (SRS), computer-assisted instruction (CAI), gamification, and teacher-made screencasts. Quantitative data was collected on student engagement, the usefulness of the technology, and student self-efficacy through a Likert-scale survey after each day of using technology. Etsu Today - Summer 2020, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU Today [magazine]

At East Tennessee State University, we are accustomed to dealing with hardship. It has been a defining part of our past. When tested by economic crises, wars, and threats to our very existence, our leaders, our faculty and staff, our students, our alumni, and our neighbors have met the challenge. ETSU not only survived, but it prevailed and prospered. It will continue to do so. From the very earliest days, our leaders faced uncertainty. Only eight days after the beginning of classes at East Tennessee State Normal School, our founding President, Sidney Gilbreath, was troubled. Faculty had already been on …

From Theory To Practice: Interdisciplinary Science In Undergraduate Education, Brie Tripp Jun 2020

From Theory To Practice: Interdisciplinary Science In Undergraduate Education, Brie Tripp

Dissertations and Theses

Science has undergone a major transformation in the 20th and 21st centuries with new fields emerging at the intersection of disciplines, such as bioethics, bioinformatics, and chemical ecology. Yet, opportunities to engage with interdisciplinary science, and the skills needed to work in these fields, are largely absent from undergraduate biology classrooms. As a consequence, students are potentially deprived of opportunities to think interdisciplinarily and engage with real-world issues that often necessitate interdisciplinary efforts. To be informed citizens in society and forward-thinking scientists in the workforce, undergraduate students will undoubtedly benefit from exposure to these interdisciplinary science experiences.

Given these considerations, …

Preparing To Cocreate: Using Learning Circles To Readyextension Professionals For Meaningful Stakeholderengagement, Bob Bertsch, Jill Heemstra, Doug Golick

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Extension professionals are being asked to address complex public issues. Doing so requires cocreativeapproaches that engage, in a significant way, the people affected by these issues. Successful engagement, however, requires specific skills and a cocreative mind-set. Extension professionals in two states participatedin learning circles to improve their engagement skills. Using a survey and interviews, we studied the impact ofthe learning circle experience on participants. We found that learning circles helped participants practicecolearning, build relationships, and change their mind-sets in ways that could move their work toward morecocreative efforts.

Reflection On The Implication Of The Jesuit Apostolic Preferences On Study Abroad And International Immersions, Rene Padilla May 2020

Reflection On The Implication Of The Jesuit Apostolic Preferences On Study Abroad And International Immersions, Rene Padilla

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

The benefit of study abroad and international immersion programs on students had been well documented, but the impact on destination communities our students visit has received significantly less attention. Many of the potential negative economic, social and cultural impacts of foreign visitors highlighted in the literature on tourism are likely to apply to students engaged in study abroad or immersive global programs. The excessive focus on the benefits for students raises the question if study abroad and international global immersions for many are simply self-serving activities. The Jesuit Apostolic Preferences can serve as a discernment tool in the planning and …
