Varicella Zoster Encephalitis In An Immunocompetent Middle-Aged Female With Benign Neurological Presentation, Kopalle Bhanu Sriram, Swathi B.S, Bernice Roberts

Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine

Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) is a neurotropic human herpesvirus that typically presents as herpes zoster following reactivation of latent infection. Central nervous system involvement such as encephalitis is uncommon and is more frequently described in immunocompromised individuals. Increasing use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based diagnostics has enabled improved recognition of VZV-related neurological disease in immunocompetent hosts.

We describe a middle-aged immunocompetent female who presented with a 15-day history of persistent headache associated with vomiting and low-grade fever. Examination revealed vesicular eruptions in the T8–T9 dermatomes, while neurological examination and neuroimaging were normal. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis demonstrated lymphocytic pleocytosis, elevated …

The 'Golden Hour': A Geospatial Analysis Of Travel Time To Public Emergency Departments In Kenya, Tushara Surapaneni, Nancy Kinyua, Benjamin Wachira

Emergency Medicine, East Africa

Introduction In Kenya and many other low- and middle-income countries, prehospital care systems are underdeveloped or entirely non-existent, leaving emergency departments (EDs) as the primary point of care for medical emergencies. The aim of this cross-sectional observational study was to use a geographic information system (GIS) to comprehensively analyse access to public EDs in Kenya within 1-hour and 2-hour travel times.

Methods Using open-source GIS software, population, land cover, elevation and road network data were analysed to create maps of 1-hour and 2-hour travel time catchment areas around public EDs in Kenya. Travel time analysis was calculated using AccessMod with …

An Seir Model On Time Scales With Discrete Applications To Tuberculosis, E. Akın, G. Yeni, D. Konur, S. R. Işık, M. R. Işık Mar 2026

An Seir Model On Time Scales With Discrete Applications To Tuberculosis, E. Akın, G. Yeni, D. Konur, S. R. Işık, M. R. Işık

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we propose a novel dynamical model on time scales consisting of new parameters to investigate the transmission dynamics of tuberculosis (TB), one of the deadliest infectious diseases worldwide, characterized by a long latency stage. The dynamical TB model, governed by the Susceptible–Exposed–Infected–Recovered (SEIR) framework within a unified form, yields a continuous model with a non-saturated incidence rate on the real numbers and discrete models with saturated incidence rates when different time domains are chosen. We analyze the stability of the equilibrium points of both the continuous TB model on the set of real numbers and the discrete …

Summary Of: Association Between Primary Care Provider Status And Preventive Health Care Among People Who Inject Drugs, E Katherine Nenninger, Katherine Sharp, Bianca Bstamente, Kim Murray, Kinna Thakarar

Northern New England Clinical & Translational Research

People who inject drugs (PWID) are at high risk for preventable infections, yet preventive care delivery remains inconsistent. This study examines whether having a primary care provider (PCP) improves access to preventive services in Maine. While many PWID are connected to primary care, the findings show that preventive care is fragmented across settings, with PCP access improving some outcomes (like hepatitis B vaccination) but not ensuring comprehensive prevention.

An Odd Protocol For An Agent-Based Model Of Hepatitis C Virus Transmission With Inter- And Intra-Group Structural And Behavioural Heterogeneous Syringe-Sharing Networks (5), Seun Ale, Que Nguyen Dr., John D. Kelleher Prof., Elizabeth Hunter Dr.

Reports

The model described in this ODD is an agent-based model of hepatitis C virus (HCV) transmission among people who inject drugs (PWID). The model incorporates structural heterogeneity through a three-group interaction framework and behavioural heterogeneity through group-specific syringe-sharing rates with additional intra-group variability. The syringe-sharing population in the model is divided into core, inner, and outer circle groups representing individuals with high, moderate, and low levels of syringe-sharing interaction intensity, respectively. In addition to differences in the number of daily interaction opportunities across groups, agents in each group are assigned syringe-sharing probabilities that vary at the individual level around their …

A Bacillus Pumilus Isolate With Promising Antimycobacterial Properties, Cody M. Pfaff

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

The emergence of multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens, particularly Mycobacterium tuberculosis, highlights the urgent need for new antimicrobial agents. Tuberculosis remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases, claiming over a million lives annually and posing increasing challenges due to the thick, lipid-rich, acid-fast cell wall of Mycobacterium species that renders them naturally resistant to many antibiotics. In this study, a soil sample collected from the Campus of Fort Hays State University yielded a bacterial isolate exhibiting strong antimicrobial activity. Initial screening against Escherichia coli MM294 showed a 10 mm inhibition zone, and subsequent testing identified the isolate as Bacillus pumilus …

Mainstreaming Mistrust: The Shift In Us Vaccine Policy Under The Trump Administration, Sanjin Musa, Amy Estlund, Megan A. Berman

Faculty Scholarship

Department of Health and Human Services led by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., represents a significant departure from long-standing public health norms. This commentary explores how historically marginalized anti-vaccine activism has moved into the mainstream of government oversight. Key actions driving this transition include the wholesale replacement of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, the departure of senior CDC officials, and the public questioning of established childhood immunization schedules. Furthermore, the administration has ceased financial support for global health entities like the World Health Organization and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, while canceling funding for innovative mRNA vaccine platforms.

These domestic policy …

In Western Australia (WA), stock assessments for key demersal species, including snapper and red emperor, have traditionally used bespoke integrated models developed in-house by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD). In line with other Australian jurisdictions, DPIRD is transitioning to Stock Synthesis (SS) as its primary platform for integrated stock assessments of WA finfish. To support this transition, DPIRD commissioned an independent expert review of recent integrated models applied to three demersal stocks. This publication responds to recommendations from Professor André Punt (University of Washington and CSIRO) in his 2024 review, which examined assessments for Pilbara red …

An Odd Protocol For An Agent-Based Model Of Hepatitis C Virus Transmission In A Two-Group Structural Heterogeneous Syringe-Sharing Network (M2), Seun Ale, Que Nguyen Dr., John D. Kelleher Prof., Elizabeth Hunter Dr.

Reports

The model described in this ODD is an agent-based model of hepatitis C virus (HCV) transmission among people who inject drugs (PWID). The model extended a baseline homogeneous model by incorporating structural heterogeneity via a two-group interaction framework. The syringe-sharing population in the model is divided into inner and outer circle groups representing individuals with differing levels of syringe-sharing interaction intensity. While all agents share the same syringe-sharing probability and epidemiological processes remain identical across agents, the number of daily interaction opportunities differs between the two groups. Interactions in the model are generated dynamically using proximity-based sampling at each timestep …

Adapting Lessons From The Indian Subcontinent To Accelerate Elimination Of Visceral Leishmaniasis As A Public Health Problem In East Africa, Eva Iniguez, Daniel Masiga, Caryn Bern, Sridhar Srikantiah

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

This viewpoint draws lessons from the elimination of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) as a public health problem in the Southeast Asia region (SEAR) to inform efforts in East Africa (EA), now the global epicenter of Leishmania donovani transmission. VL is fatal and there is no licensed vaccine. Success in India relied on robust surveillance, rapid diagnosis, single-dose treatment, vector control, and multi-partner coordination. EA faces additional challenges than SEAR with multiple sand fly vectors, sensitive diagnostics and longer treatment regimens, high population mobility, and gaps in ecological and epidemiological knowledge. We highlight how strategies from South Asia could be adapted while …

The Social And Biological Frontiers Of Polio: Comparing Global Eradication Strategies, Srisai A. Turangi

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

This paper provides a comparative analysis of the divergent global strategies for poliomyelitis (polio) eradication, examining the historical and structural contexts of developed nations – the United States and United Kingdom – alongside the enduring challenges in endemic regions such as Nigeria and Pakistan. Biomedical innovations like the Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) and Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) have helped bring the world to a state of almost complete global eradication, but progress is still uneven due to variations in funding, healthcare infrastructure, and the legacy of colonialism. Studies reveal how a framework where global health inequalities remained, allowed for resource-rich …

Setting The Stage For Grants Pass (& A Moral Constitutional Reckoning), Sara K. Rankin

William & Mary Law Review

The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson marked a seismic shift in the legal landscape governing homelessness throughout the country. By permitting the criminalization of involuntary acts, such as sleeping or resting in public when no shelter is available, the Court foreclosed constitutional protections under the Eighth Amendment’s Cruel and Unusual Punishments Clause and signaled judicial deference to punitive local policies targeting unhoused people. But Grants Pass was not spontaneous; it was seeded over time. This Article situates Grants Pass within the broader legal and nonlegal contexts that made its outcome possible. Part I explores …

The Unexplored Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Burnout, And Resiliency Among Hospital Staff., Elizabeth Davis

Doctor of Social Work Capstone Projects

This study addresses the critical issue of staff turnover at Baptist Health Floyd, where rates exceed national hospital averages. While prior research connects burnout to workplace stressors, less is known about the role of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and resilience among hospital staff. Understanding these relationships is essential for improving workforce stability and patient care outcomes. A cross-sectional survey design was used, with convenience sampling of hospital employees and providers (n=207). Data were collected via a Qualtrics survey using validated instruments: the Maslach Burnout Inventory (Maslach et al., 2016), the ACE questionnaire (Felitti et al., 1998), and the Brief Resilience …
