Yoga, Stress, And College Students During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Mixed Methods Study, Lori Klein

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

College students have experienced exponential increases in stress and mental health concerns that continued to rise during the global coronavirus pandemic. Yoga is a popular, well-regarded method for improving psychological wellbeing, and this study explored how students’ perceived stress improved during a semester-long introductory yoga course upon returning to in-person instruction after a period of remote learning as a result of coronavirus restrictions. This study used an explanatory sequential mixed method design to first measure perceived stress scores and then compare this data to student-reports of wellbeing. College students (n = 121) enrolled in 8 sections of Yoga 1 completed …

Factors Contributing To College Counselors’ Probability To Take A Client’S Sexual History, Adam Gregory Jan 2022

Factors Contributing To College Counselors’ Probability To Take A Client’S Sexual History, Adam Gregory

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Many young adults are experiencing human sexuality related issues and disorders. Researchers have found ample evidence linking hindered human sexuality discussions with clients by mental health professionals to low and reduced comfort, lack of willingness, and non-positive attitudes about sex. There is limited research that shows there is a connection between sex-based discussions in the field of mental health and the lack of clinicians’ education and training in the field of human sexuality. One of the most essential ways to identify, treat, and promote sexual health is a thorough sexual history taking by clinicians. Mental health professionals agree that taking …

Representations And Perceptions Of Sexual Pleasure In Undergraduate Anatomy And Physiology (A&P) Courses, Brenda Kucha Anak Ganeng Jan 2022

Representations And Perceptions Of Sexual Pleasure In Undergraduate Anatomy And Physiology (A&P) Courses, Brenda Kucha Anak Ganeng

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The World Health Organization defines sexual pleasure as an important part of positive sexual experiences and sexual health. Despite its importance, sexual pleasure is often omitted from sexual health programming and curricula. Undergraduate human anatomy and physiology (A&P) courses serve as avenues where students who intend to go into health care learn foundational knowledge about human body systems and health; however, to our knowledge, there has been no documentation of if and how A&P students learn about sexual pleasure. A&P textbooks serve as an important resource for curriculum design and learning. I sought to answer the following research question: How …

Maintained Elevated Systolic Blood Pressures In African Americans And Hispanic Individuals Following Maximum Oxygen Consumption Test When Compared To Caucasians: A Pilot Study, Zaria S. Opara, Heysel Morales, Michael Diaz, Allan Knox

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

PURPOSE: There is robust evidence presenting higher incidences of hypertension experienced by the African American (AA) population when compared with matched cohorts. Exercise has been shown to reduce the prevalence of hypertension, however, the cardiovascular recovery of exercise is associated with mortality. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the cardiovascular recovery between AAs, Hispanics (HSPs), and Caucasians (CAs). METHODS: VO2max was measured by indirect calorimetry. Body composition was measured by air displacement plethysmography (BODPOD). Brachial blood pressures were captured by automated cuff before exercise, immediately after exercise, and every 2 minutes following exercise for a total …

No Sex Differences In Common Carotid Artery Stiffness Response Following Maximal Oxygen Consumption Test, Heysel Y. Morales, Michael Diaz, Zaria Opara, Allan Knox

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

PURPOSE: Previous investigations have reported sex differences in the time course of age-related arterial stiffness, with postmenopausal women presenting increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Using sex as a biological variable has identified differences between males and females in physiological responses to equivalent doses of exercise. The purpose of this study was to determine if sex differences exist in arterial stiffness response to a maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max) exercise test. METHODS: VO2max was measured by indirect calorimetry. Body composition was measured by air displacement plethysmography (BODPOD). Indices of common carotid artery (CCA) stiffness (Peterson’s elastic modulus [Ep], Beta stiffness [B1], …

Maximum Aerobic Exercise Induces Common Carotid Vasoconstriction And Increased Vascular Resistance, Michael Diaz, Zaria Opara, Heysel Morales, Allan Knox

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

PURPOSE: Low-to-moderate intensity aerobic exercise has been reported to elicit changes in systemic hemodynamics. Recent evidence suggests that the cerebral circulation reacts independently to systemic circulations to the same physiological stimuli. The aim of this is to determine the influence of high-intensity aerobic exercise on common carotid artery (CCA) hemodynamics. METHODS: Hemodynamic measurements were recorded before and following the cessation of a maximum oxygen uptake test (VO2max). One minute video of the CCA by Doppler ultrasound were recorded and used to determine peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolic velocity (EDV), time averaged mean blood velocity (TAMEAN), timed …

Physical Activity And Fitness In 21stcentury Education, Ajay Gonnelli Oct 2021

Physical Activity And Fitness In 21stcentury Education, Ajay Gonnelli

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

The broad issue examined in this literature review covers the importance of physical education and fitness in 21st-century education and how to motivate kids to be more active. Physical activity is defined as any movement that requires the skeletal muscles to function to create energy to be used (WHO, 20201). In education movement and energy is vital to the human body, its muscles, and their functions. For a skeletal muscle to function, energy needs to be produced. That energy comes from the oxygen (02) that we inspire and the carbon dioxide (C02) we expire. To inspire and expire we need …

Reinvigorating A Technical Countering Weapons Of Mass Destruction Distance Learning Graduate Certificate Program, James C. Petrosky, Gaiven Varshney, Jeremy Slagley, Sara Shaghaghi

Faculty Publications

Current Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD) demands can be divided broadly into policy and science. The science of chemical, biological, and radiological/nuclear weapons informs the limits of development, production, employment, operation, detection, risk characterization, human and material protection, and medical intervention. In short, the science of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) should precede and inform the development of policy. It is to this end that the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) CWMD program was re-established, providing a technical educational option for practitioners to understand the science behind a very technically challenging subject.

Teacher Wellbeing In A Juvenile Detention Facility, Elizabeth G. Baker Jun 2021

Teacher Wellbeing In A Juvenile Detention Facility, Elizabeth G. Baker

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

“Teaching is inextricably linked to teachers’ personal lives; teachers invest their selves and their sense of identity and self-esteem in their work” (Rinchen, Ritchie, & Bellocchi, 2016, p. 604).

The teaching profession in the United States of America can be a highly stressful one, especially in America’s largest urban centers, due to the high incidences of violence, lack of resources and insufficient funding (Tobin, Roth & Zimmermann, 2001). The situation is even worse for teachers teaching in juvenile detention centers with traumatized youth and many teachers may internalize this trauma. Teachers may experience tremendous emotional tensions, such as …

An Explanatory Sequential Mixed Methods Nutrition And Physical Activity Intervention Study On Changes In Knowledge, Self-Efficacy, And Outcome Expectations Of Fathers, Sarah Hortman

Theses & Dissertations

Overweight and obesity rates are a continuing concern resulting in poor health outcomes and annual healthcare costs in the billions of dollars. An upstream approach of health promotion is critical to change the focus from treatment and management to prevention of chronic disease. Preventing chronic disease through evidence-based health promotion practices incorporating educational interventions aimed at dietary and physical activity behaviors will preclude negative health outcomes including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension.

The family environment is an important consideration in the prevention of chronic disease including obesity. Parents are role models for their children, including fathers who are …
